Creating my own exhaust gaskets?

I need to replace at least 4 of my gaskets from the manifold back and I really don't want to pay $9 a gasket (I'm a cheap ass). Is it possible to create my own from affordable gasket material? I know that FCs will destroy your standard kaset, so what material would you suggest? I was actually thinking of aluminium or copper, but I'm not sure how well of a seal that would create. :D

I used Headgasket paper from a checker.

It has a metal lining in it and was easy enough to cut with clippers.

It worked for me and I have enough material to make ike 40 gaskets.

How well has it held up to the rigors of the rotary, and can it be used for other gaskets for things like the intake and BAC valve? :D

I'm getting ready to get this project underway, I just finished undercoating the car, so I can start ripping into the exhaust next. Is there anything I should look out for when I'm pulling those components apart, and is there anything special I have to do when putting it back together?

Thanks! :D

Well for your first Q. They held up for a few months no prob. I then switched exhausts and got real ones(racing beat/corksport ones).

The number one thing needed in our exhaust systems removal is PB BLASTER!

The stuff works 100x's better than WD40 or somehting else.

Be patient. I am betting you'll strip/snap at least one bolt.

Be prepared to drill it out and get a new one/bolt and nut combo.

I've snapped a bolt off my main cat, exhaust manifold, and catback.

The good thing is that everything is new now so it isn;t rusty and seized.
