Convertible Differences?

Is there a difference from the 1988 convertible than the 89-91?

I see that the 89-91 have rear speakers etc...
Will the front carpets be the same?
Are the plastic trim pieces the same also?

What other changes are different from the 88 and 89-91?

Thanks!

There are numerous differences between S4 and S5, but also from 89 to 90-91. So far as I know 89 did not have rear speakers. I owned 2 different 89 and neither had them. My father and I own a 90 and 91. Both of those have rear speakers.

90 and 91 had steering wheel airbag. I'm not sure if that was an option or standard. Regardless of that the steering column surround and levers for turn signals and such are different from non-airbag.

There are a few other differences...um..top control for 90-91 moved to the center console is one that comes to mind.

The two main interior differences are:
- The stereo surround and the AC grille above it are different between the series. The S4 gets very brittle after a few years, so it common to replace it with the S5 parts that are much more durable. Both the stereo surround and AC grille need to be replaced at the same time. The S4 cigarette lighter light bulb doesn't quite fit in the S5 lighter, but it is close enough.
- The warning light surround may or may not have a different angle.
Mazdatrix - Interior

There are many other differences that may or may not matter to you. If you want to make a spreadsheet then knock yourself out. It is probably easiest to browse the Mazdatrix website to note which parts are interchangeable, and the Mazda microfiche may help with that too, but otherwise you would need to compare them upon disassembly.

88 is completely different down to the littlest things... wiring, sensors, from 89, but there are some same stuff, but than 89 ihas differences from 90-91 like jeff mentioned. makes little sense I guess they just liked changing things every year.
