Convertable GTUs

Hey all,
We have added another 7 to the stable. I don't know much about 2nd Gen 7's, but this one is an 88 Vert GTUs. I did some searches and it seems that the GTUs was first offered in 89. Can anyone help me with this?

It has the factory mesh 15" wheels. What exactly does the GTUs stand for? I see that it is supposed to have sport tuned suspension.

This is what the car has:
Power convertable top
Power windows
A/C
Tilt wheel
LSD
5 spd

Can anyone give me some info about this? Oh, by the way, my co-worker gave me the car because he just aquired a 99 Mustang Bullet (One of only 7000 ever made). So now, we have a red and black 1st gen, a red and black 2nd gen.... now all we need is a red and black 3rd gen........ :bigok:

Thanks,
Bill

their is no such thing as a vert GTUs
now it could be a hybrid of a GTUs and a Vert but i dont see the point other than the LSD.

There is no such thing as a "Convertible GTUs".
Someone slapped a "GTUs" sticker on your convertible.

I'll post pics soon. This car is unmodified other than the stereo. IT is not in mint condition, but a little spit and polish will make it look good again.

And it has the factory GTUs stickers and it is a vert. Now I know that someone could have added the stickers... Is there any way to decode it? Thanks.

Later,
Bill

Can you post the first say, 7 digits of the VIN number? That will tell much.

Dont bother like others said it is not a vert GTUs the option is impossible.....sorry

We have a winner!! No such animal ever existed. They may have put the LSD and 4.30 gears in the vert and slapped those stickers on it, but there was never a GTUs vert made.

How about "GTUs fenders" on the convertible?

First 10 of the VIN: JM1FC3516J

It also has the leather interior, BBS wheels, front and rear disc brakes...

Vert with a GTUs sticker, replaced fender maybe due to damage maybe? Otherwise, it checks out fully as a vert that luckily got the LSD.

yea, no such thing as a vert GTUs, someone put the stickers on it, and maybe the GTUs rear end, but doubtful.

I dunno, I thought it strange when I searched the forums and couldn't find anything on a GTUs Vert. If someone added the stickers, they did it when it was a year old, because my freind bought it when it was just over a year, and it has had the stickers on it ever since he got it. Also, it definately is LSD.

It would seem strange to go through all the trouble of installing an LSD and yet leave the rest of the car completely stock, down to the air filter. No performance parts on it at all. stock exhaust, everything.
I just wish there were some way of actually documenting what came on the car.
Thanks for your help.

The only real difference between a vert and the GTUs is that the GTUs has a LSD (there are other minor suspension differences as well- but hardly anything to consider).

They both had the heavy duty brakes, they both had sport seats, they both had alum hoods... So really the only thing you could change if you wanted to keep near stock was the differential.

BTW, all 2nd gens (Maybe first gens too?) had disc brakes. Only differences were 4 piston vs. 1 piston calipers, and vented vs. solid rotors.

Mark, don't forget that the GTUs also came with a 4.30 rear end instead of the normal 4.10.

Thanks guys for the info. I'm just gonna leave the stickers there. I talked to my buddy about it and he said that they did in fact make a limited number of GTUs Verts. He was an RX7 guru at Mazda before he came to work with me. I know that is hearsay, but until I find proof one way or another, I'm just gonna leave it as it is.

Either way, it makes a nice conversation piece.

Thanks again,
Bill

Hmm, my buddy in Irvine who has direct access to build info says its full of shit.

And toss in that the vert is as far away from the whole concept of the GTUs as you can get and still be a FC.

See the GTUs was designed to be a strippy performance model. It didn't have any options other than air conditioning and a AM/FM radio... not even a power sunroof or power windows... Ultra lightweight... not heavy weight. 16 inch wheels... not the smaller 15 inch BBS wheels.

Of course they didn't make a vert that didn't have a power roof and power windows (and power mirrors, and 200 lbs of extra supports, and high power acoustic equilibrium stereo, etc).

snowball 04-19-06 11:55 PM

besides GTUs was s5 your vert is s4....

13b4me 04-20-06 12:07 AM

I'll add myself to the list of people that are gonna tell you there's no such thing as a GTUs Vert... Mazda intended the GTUs to be a stripped down lightweight model, as Mark already stated... Being a convertible completely nullifies that entire aspiration...

Besides, your Vert is a S4 (like stated) with black mouldings... The GTUs model was only offered in the S5 trim, which meant body colored mouldings, and were only available in the 1989-1990 model years...

Can you tell us who this person is so the rest of us can avoid him?

Haha sometimes the harshness of Ted comes as a breath of fresh air... :)

BoostedRex 04-20-06 11:35 AM

My wife owned a '90 GTUs and read up on that model for over a year. Whoever your buddy is that told you there was a GTUs vert really needs to lay off the crack pipe. Sorry to burst your bubble.

91verty 04-20-06 01:54 PM

i was under the impression of people who smoked crack were obviously Honda owners!!

BoostedRex 04-20-06 01:58 PM

I guess not 91verty. Looks like this guy's friend smokes it too. :) It's all good though, if nothing else then this guy will have a good idea of what parts to acquire if he wants to make a franken7 GTUs vert.
