What is this for?
Behind the water pump. Round black plastic connector, one wire, this is S5 NA. I think it may have been loose when the motor came out....

Optional supplementary electric fan tempswitch.

Zounds - did you just make that up? ;)
I thought no 2nd gen came with an electric fan

clokker 10-27-12 01:26 PM

Some came with a small (10", IIRC) "helper fan" that went on the AC condenser.
Never seen one in person but it's definitely in the FSM.

Or, I made it up.

Carzy Driver 10-27-12 01:26 PM

some came with a small pusher fan, my TII did

Acroy 10-27-12 01:40 PM

Disconnected it was, disconnected it is, and disconnected it shall remain. Thanks much. I had not run into the helper fan in the FSM.

The small electric fan would be located in front of the radiator.

Is the helper fan worth having? I just finished restoring and installing mine lol

Carzy Driver 10-27-12 04:09 PM

not really

I believe it likes to turn on when the A/C is used to limit the extra heat created.

sclas90 10-27-12 04:18 PM

I think they only came on models with ac, I had one on my t2. It ran when the key was on.

Acroy 10-27-12 06:52 PM

My car did not have the fan- '90GTUs with ac. perhaps it was turbo only?

Hmm, I removed my A/C. If the fan serves no other purpose I may have to get creative to see if its worth having in the car...

In general, a pusher fan- especially a small one- coupled with a puller fan is a pretty crumby combination.

GTUs didn't come with AC, someone added your AC system.

Poker Player 10-27-12 10:01 PM

I thought that was called a "water thermal something sensor"... oh well

True...I'll prolly just leave it on there until I go FMIC. After spending the time to sandblast and paint it, it looks too good to take off. Lol

$859 dealer installed option, according to my window sticker.

FYI this is a real GTUs, along with the fresh motor it is getting manual rack, RB steel flywheel, and ac removed. I'm holding onto all the original parts in case I (or the next owner) at some point want to restore it to 'original' condition

oooo, a blue FB I've never seen before just farted by. Must go meet the new neighbor.
