code nine... thermo sensor.

getting a code 9 from my new car. looked in the fsm but couldnt find it. where is it located? can I take the thermo sensor from my s4 and put it into my s5?

it's on the back of the waterpump housing (top part). i'm not sure if they're swappable though.

It has a green plug, and is on the back of the waterpump. Mazdatrix only carries one for all 86-92 so I assume they are interchangeable. Here's a picture, though I'm not sure how much it will help since the sensor had snapped in two pieces.

The dealer says there are 4 types. There are 2 types for our cars. They are the same but you have a chance to get a changed one. For no apparent reason Mazda changed from the pipe thread "aluminum crush washer" to a straight thread. There is nothing to go buy to tell you what you have. The only way is to take yours out and see if you have the washer or not. Mazdatrix sells both types they are $30

Looks like you're missing the thick spacer that goes at the rear of the lower mounting bolt for the alternator. You want to have that in there or your alternator belts will have a short lifespan.

Hey, my plug that plugs into the thermo sensor is melting and keeps falling out, causing my car to seem weaker and also, stutter.... I dont mean to jack the thread, but is someone willing to sell me just the plug??? my sensor is good, only the plug coming from the wiring harness is frigged... thankx

No, you're thinking of the water temp sender that goes in the rear side housing, which is completely different from the water thermo sensor that goes on the back of the water pump. Mazdatrix lists the water thermo sensor as "Water thermal Switch", but trust me when I say they are the exact same part. Mazdatrix is where I got my replacement, and I bought the "water thermal switch".

Yeah, the current belt's been on there since I bought the car and it's been fine in the year and a half I've had the car. I'll take care of it sometime though .

The water thermo sensor is a lot more critical of a part than most people realize. When mine snapped, the car had no power and was sounding and smelling like a 2-stroke boat engine. You can probably pull the connector from a junkyard if you need it.

Mines too... I didnt know how crucial it was... until I rigged it back up and went drifting... now it seems a whole lot easier to "power over" instead of "shift locking," like what I usually do... I had no ideal how crucial it is...

Yours must not have been affected as badly as mine, I could barely get my car out of the driveway. I thought the motor was fried at first.

They are not the same part. They have different thread sizes. Internaly they are the same.

Now towards the top of the page, you will see a few parts listed under the category "Water Temp". This is what you are talking about. Mazdatrix mentions that there is a "straight thread" and a "pipe thread" version of this part. However, this is completely different than the "Water thermo sensor."

Towards the bottom of the page, you will see something called a "Water Thermal Switch." For reasons know only to them, that's what Mazdatrix calls it. The point I was trying to make was that you were referring to the wrong part altogether, and that as far as Mazdatrix is concerned, Water thermal switch = Water Thermo Sensor. That is what I meant when I said "same part".

No its not.

We have stated that the internals and function are the same. That does not make them the same part. There is even 2 different part numbers on them.

Part 1 is a pipe thread.
Part 2 is a straight thread.

There for 2 parts available, where one will not fit another.

Look at part munber 18-8400-8574. This is the water thermo sensor that this thread is dealing with. This is also the sensor that I have ordered in the past to replace the water thermo sensor.

Edit: I am not saying you are wrong about the threads, I'm just saying that it refers to a completely different part and is irrelevant for the purpose of this discussion.

I am not talking about the temp sender on the side of the rear iron.
