Changing diff fluid, does the car have to be flat?

A friend told me that I need to have the car flat when re filling the rear diff, is this true?

If the FSM states that the rear diff needs 1.5qt, couldnt I add just that amount or no?

i'd get it as level as you can you could just add 1.5 qt but i would make sure it's full before you stop adding it

I guess if you have the rear end jacked high....when you add the fluid....you could add to much.

Just jack it up and get it so it is jacked up on all corners...on jackstands.

Only problem with jacking is you will tilt fluid to the front and not all will drain out. Depending on just how high you jack it up using the 1.5 qt as capacity, you could end up overfilling it.

Back the *** end up onto ramps and jack the front up and support with stands. That's what I do, and it's worked well.

All lubricant levels (engine, gearbox and diff oil) should be checked and filled with the car as level as possible.
