Arrow changing the diff fluid

Hey guys I hit the 500mile mark on my rebuild today so im gonna be changing the oil tomorrow. WHile im at it I wanna change the diff fluid as it has not been changed since mazda put it in back in 1986.
ANyway someone mentioned a while abck that when they changed their diff fluid they drained the old fluid, replaced it with gear oil, drove around a bit then drained the gear oil and put in new fluid.

IS this a good idea? if so what kind fo oil should I use to clean it?

ALso what kind of diff fluid should I use for an 86 base. Im sure the haynes has it listed but I already started the thread so..

I wouldn't worry about using anything special to clean it. If anything, throw some Seafoam in.

I think the differential uses 80W-90 gear oil, though you can get some Redline synthetic stuff that's good for a bit less resistance.

One very important thing: MAKE SURE YOU CAN OPEN THE FILL PLUG BEFORE YOU OPEN THE DRAIN PLUG. It's not uncommon, especially on old differentials, for the drain plug to be a lot easier to open than the fill plug. And if you can drain it, but not fill it... there's a problem.
