car dieing

hey i just got my 1st car its a 88 rx-7 and runs awsome but i got 1 problem with it, when i went 2 start it after it sitting for a while it didnt do ne thing there was nothing when i turned the key so i left it on acc for a bit so the radio was on and then turned the key again and it started up and i drove it about 3 blocks or so and i was comming up to a light so i started to slow down and it just died, all the lights and everythng were on so i stoped and turned the key and nothing happened again so i left it sit totaly off for about 40 seconds and then it started up and was fine after that.....this has been the 1st time this happened 2 me ive had the car for about 2 days now and tonight was the 1st time i had this problem.... can anyone help me and let me know wut this could be? maybe this occured because it was cold and i didnt let it warm up long enough?

Matt, Welcome to the Forum. Is your FC a TII or an N/A?.

RoughRex 10-23-06 10:27 AM

Not starting issue sounds like bad ignition switch or starter solenoid. Not sure why it died on you though. Welcome to FC's....Land of electrical gremlins. It IS a 19 year old car!

mattyL 10-23-06 10:31 AM

its just a 13b non turbo gxl, i went 2 start it this morning as well and it did the same thing it just didnt die this time... but i figured once its on acc for like 10 seconds or so i think the sterio or alarm beeps a couple times then it starts normal so maybe it has something 2 do with thoes 2 maybe?

My5ABaby 10-23-06 10:38 AM

Does it idle on its own?

RoughRex 10-23-06 10:54 AM

wait wait wait...

You put the key on ACC for a little bit....then something beeps? THEN it will start?

If so, that is an aftermarket anti-theft system likely installed by a used car dealer. I have seen the same thing in a couple of other cars. Most of them come with a little remote that you can enter codes with. Dealers use it because they can issue temporary passcodes for them. If you don't make your payment...the passcode expires and *poof* no more car for you...it disables the ignition system. When you make your payment they issue you a new code and you're back in business.

And how would he be able to eventually start it with a dead battery? Magic?

Cpt.Zanzibar 10-23-06 04:49 PM

what does the voltage gauge read when its idleing and when your moving.

mattyL 10-23-06 05:57 PM

yea it idles on its own it runs good just the starting issue is the only thing....the voltage gauge reads more then half, the alternator was replaced not to long ago...it does have a factory alarm so when u put the key in the door it will un-arm it self.... the battery is fine cuz the radio and wutnot works on acc so i just listen 2 music for a bit then it will start...but where i park it, its on a hill and i heard that these cars tend to flood could that be the issue maybe?

misterstyx69 10-23-06 06:24 PM

Just a quick Note.I have noticed That If My Car(FC) is parked on a UPward Incline, with say 1/4 tank..it will not start.I just avoid Parking on inclines now.As far as the dieing of the car, sounds like the Alarm...wondering Have you Changed the Fuel filter in your FC yet?

mattyL 10-23-06 06:28 PM

ianno, my uncle owned it and never really drove ,maybe once a week and b4 that his mom was the original owner and also babied it.... ill take a look at all the recipts that he gave me and see wut was done, i know the clutch, tires and wutnot is new.....he said it does die sometimes when its cold then itll start and it will be fine(witch is was) so yeah its probably just the alarm thing and maybe cuz i park on a pretty steep hill... ne ways thanks guys

They do, but it doesnt sound like thats your problem. Does it crank at all when you try to start it? If so then it could be flooded, which can be solved a couple of ways - not really a big deal.

RoughRex 10-23-06 09:49 PM

If your uncle's mom was the original owner...I doubt it has the alarm I mentioned. The beeping could be something unrelated like the power steering system. I actually just read in another post where a guy said his fuel pump wasn't kicking on untill like 10 seconds after he turned the key to ACC....maybe you have the same problem. Not sure what would cause that though.

T-Rav15 10-23-06 10:31 PM

I've actually had a lot of problems with dying and not starting right away due to bad battery connecters. They kept coming loose while driving and it would die and still have a good enough connection to run the radio but not start the car. Just my .02

RoughRex 10-23-06 10:56 PM

LOL...I just noticed what I posted earlier:

ianno i think she did replace the alarm cuz there is a rockford amp in the storage compartment and all the speakers have been replaced with jl's lol so maybe she did do the alarm to, im not 2 sure.... once the car is started and warmed up its awsome but when its cold it sucks lol maybe ill replace the fuel pump and see if that will do anything
