Broke a bolt that holds upper water hose neck

:( Do they make bolt extractors that small?? im kinda upset about this.. Not enough leverage for a vise grip.. decided to slot the lil bit of the screw to use a screw driver no bueno..

Blackfc3srx7 04-18-09 09:22 PM

you have a pic of it? Just wondering so we can see what might work. I have only drilled out things that are do hard to get with vice grips.

Hypertek 04-18-09 09:27 PM

here u go

i could just swap the whole housing if I could get one locally cheap within a day or so lol

Hypertek 04-18-09 09:39 PM

imma head out to sears right now for a bolt extractor.. hopefully they make em that small

coxxoc 04-18-09 10:32 PM

You can use an easy out to get that out. Worst case scenario is drill it out and heli-coil it.

Hypertek 04-18-09 11:36 PM

yeah just got back, bought a bolt extractor, and a tap set as last resort.

Laskowski 04-19-09 12:24 AM

ya make sure you get the center punch directly in the middle, or you'll brake the extraction tool, happened to me on a yoda truck water pump, ended up using a good amount of gasket maker, cause it was a beater after we broke the extraction tool. has worked for 2 months so far tho

AUGieDogie 04-19-09 12:44 AM

I did the same thing one night. Damn 20 min job turned into days. The easy out (yeah right) broke off in the sucker then i was screwed. I had to pull the water pump housing out and drag it to a machine shop. :(

Gene 04-19-09 11:26 AM

Heating it up some first may help. Remember if you're breaking bolts they are likely seized up in the holes and you could end up breaking the extractor too! The extractor is made of hardened steel and is a total bitch to drill out if you break it off.

Hypertek 04-19-09 01:07 PM

cool ill try that, yeah a friend suggested that as well..

Hey im putting a new thermostat in, the original has a rubber gasket on it, the new one doesnt, do i need the rubber gasket or do i just seal the whole thing up with waterpump gasket maker?

jake1191 04-19-09 01:11 PM

mine didnt have the rubber ring when i replaced it but i put on a new oem gasket when i installed it too.

arghx 04-19-09 01:35 PM

those bolts always break.

Hypertek 04-19-09 06:15 PM

wasnt too successful.. im pulling the water pump jacket to try it outside of the car.. how the hell do you remove this thing? i got all the bolts/nuts off, trying to remove the water pump pulley but its like blocked by the crank pulley..

87 t-66 04-19-09 06:27 PM

take the crank pulley off...

Hypertek 04-19-09 06:51 PM

well i screwed it up beyond repair.. tried drilling it out.. no bueno
gotta source a water pump jacket.. are s4 and s5 the same?

Gene 04-19-09 07:21 PM

You can't drill it out and put in a helicoil?

Hypertek 04-19-09 07:35 PM

i missed it up.. you dont even wanna know lmao
i sourced one already, ill just be down for a day or so =(

Boosted11 04-19-09 08:21 PM

Oh dude that's a very frustrating bolt to snap ... I know mine was on the verge. I installed a koyo rad put everything together, tightened those bolts up really good. Still leaked so I reefed on them, didn't give it my all in case it snapped but problem solved!

Hypertek 04-19-09 08:33 PM

im really debating to put it all together and limp it on the 2 bolts tomarrow for my commute since i really hate buggin my folks to borrow a car (makes me look really bad that im always wrenching/breaking something)

I think it would be better to borrow your 'folk's" car for ONE day, rather than Blow the Hell out of the engine because of no coolant..(tuck you pride in your Pants and ASK them for the Freakin car!)
you'd be Borrowing the car alot after that!

Hypertek 04-20-09 09:38 PM

ok i got s4 turbo jacket, minor differences, mostly in the neck since its 2 bolt and has a rad cap.. should be cool tho, ive seen a few setups with this and s5 rads..

Gotta drill and tap for my temp sensor

Hypertek 04-20-09 10:19 PM

ugh s4 and s5 water pumps are different..
got one already sourced out =D

Hypertek 04-20-09 11:13 PM

oh well.. kinda sucks, but added benefits should be easier bleeding of the cooling system, will be somewhat like this instead of just one overfill hose at the s5 rad

Hypertek 04-21-09 08:37 PM

picked up a new S4 waterpump.. time to get this badboy back on the road!

87 t-66 04-21-09 11:22 PM

where do you get all these pics from lol. i never understood why the s5 used a plastic thermostat neck.
