Broke a bolt that holds upper water hose neck
:( Do they make bolt extractors that small?? im kinda upset about this.. Not enough leverage for a vise grip.. decided to slot the lil bit of the screw to use a screw driver no bueno..
you have a pic of it? Just wondering so we can see what might work. I have only drilled out things that are do hard to get with vice grips.
here u go
http://i42.tinypic.com/es6brq.jpg i could just swap the whole housing if I could get one locally cheap within a day or so lol |
imma head out to sears right now for a bolt extractor.. hopefully they make em that small
You can use an easy out to get that out. Worst case scenario is drill it out and heli-coil it.
yeah just got back, bought a bolt extractor, and a tap set as last resort.
ya make sure you get the center punch directly in the middle, or you'll brake the extraction tool, happened to me on a yoda truck water pump, ended up using a good amount of gasket maker, cause it was a beater after we broke the extraction tool. has worked for 2 months so far tho
I did the same thing one night. Damn 20 min job turned into days. The easy out (yeah right) broke off in the sucker then i was screwed. I had to pull the water pump housing out and drag it to a machine shop. :(
Heating it up some first may help. Remember if you're breaking bolts they are likely seized up in the holes and you could end up breaking the extractor too! The extractor is made of hardened steel and is a total bitch to drill out if you break it off.
cool ill try that, yeah a friend suggested that as well..
Hey im putting a new thermostat in, the original has a rubber gasket on it, the new one doesnt, do i need the rubber gasket or do i just seal the whole thing up with waterpump gasket maker? |
mine didnt have the rubber ring when i replaced it but i put on a new oem gasket when i installed it too.
those bolts always break.
wasnt too successful.. im pulling the water pump jacket to try it outside of the car.. how the hell do you remove this thing? i got all the bolts/nuts off, trying to remove the water pump pulley but its like blocked by the crank pulley..
take the crank pulley off...
well i screwed it up beyond repair.. tried drilling it out.. no bueno
gotta source a water pump jacket.. are s4 and s5 the same? |
You can't drill it out and put in a helicoil?
i missed it up.. you dont even wanna know lmao
i sourced one already, ill just be down for a day or so =( |
Oh dude that's a very frustrating bolt to snap ... I know mine was on the verge. I installed a koyo rad put everything together, tightened those bolts up really good. Still leaked so I reefed on them, didn't give it my all in case it snapped but problem solved!
im really debating to put it all together and limp it on the 2 bolts tomarrow for my commute since i really hate buggin my folks to borrow a car (makes me look really bad that im always wrenching/breaking something)

you'd be Borrowing the car alot after that! |
ok i got s4 turbo jacket, minor differences, mostly in the neck since its 2 bolt and has a rad cap.. should be cool tho, ive seen a few setups with this and s5 rads..
Gotta drill and tap for my temp sensor |
ugh s4 and s5 water pumps are different..
got one already sourced out =D |
oh well.. kinda sucks, but added benefits should be easier bleeding of the cooling system, will be somewhat like this instead of just one overfill hose at the s5 rad

picked up a new S4 waterpump.. time to get this badboy back on the road!
where do you get all these pics from lol. i never understood why the s5 used a plastic thermostat neck.
ugh so basically my alt is a s5 onto a s4.. doesnt fight direct now =(
i probably need to use washers |

ugh frustration, its getting late.. time to take a breathe, and stop.. minor clearance issues putting s4 pump housing on s5, i should have just sourced a s5 TII housing.. but i bought a new water pump, and like the idea of the rad cap.
same thing happened to me last night!
except we now have 2 bolts broken off in the hosing. drilled out the bolt and attempted to re-tap it but had no luck.. :( |
ic.. yeah i ended up with a S4 pump housing since it was local.. ended up needing a s4 pump for that, no biggy, nice to get a new water pump out of the way,.. just some minor tweaking of s5 parts to fit, and I have no regrets putting teh S4 parts on my s5 at the moment. I however spent more than i wanted too though on this stupid lil problem lol. Car runs alot cooler now, but that could just be from the new thermostat and coolant.
