Boosting a n/a 6port

I was just wondering if I could run 3 or 4 lbs of boost on the stock fuel system untill I can afford to get a better one

dwb87 12-14-11 12:36 AM

People are probably going to flame the shit out of you...

There are plenty of boosted 6 port threads. You just gotta search for them... ;-)

skkitz 12-14-11 12:39 AM

Lol prolly but I cant seem to find if you can do this or not

The (Almost) Complete Guide To Turbocharging The Naturally Aspirated Second Generation RX-7 (by: Aaron Cake)

i wouldnt do shit on the stock fuel system of an n/a, if you are going as far as putting a turbo and manifold and downpipe and charge piping, how hard is it to add a cheap additional fuel injector controller? even putting two 550s and running 8lbs you could do it safe like that. save your cash, buy a used haltech before you buy anything, install the haltech and fuel injectors, get it running n/a, then add a turbo to the mix. dont get in a rush or you will end up with a blown motor, then get discouraged, then sell it to some kid who wants a project, that joins the military and his parents send it to the junk yard. then your super cool turbo rx7 is some guys clutch fan in a year. good luck bro.

skkitz 12-14-11 01:19 AM

Thanx man how much would a used haltech normally run?

hkp 12-14-11 01:26 AM

you can pick up an e6k with a terminated harness for like 600 bucks.

hkp 12-14-11 01:27 AM

just sold

see those 4 things with the brass barbed fittings, those are injector bungs that you can weld on, you just find a spot on the manifold that sprays equally into the runners and mount those and plumb fuel to them. mind you all of this is only cheap if you can turn a wrench and read, if you cant grasp the concept of fuel injection or read and learn then i am completely wasting my time. on second hand, sell your car and go buy a turbo model lol j/k. theres a couple ways to do this, im just trying to give you some ideas.

skkitz 12-14-11 09:49 AM

alright I'll check into all this. I also have a guy wanting me to rebuild his 13b in the mean time so I'm going to have 2 projects going at once...I'm trying to talk him into letting me port it while I have it apart.

Have you ever ported or built a 13B?

RotaryEvolution 12-14-11 12:47 PM

and this is how it starts.

you know those threads:

"i bought a car and on the way home it started acting funny and now it doesn't start"
"my engine smokes, are these ports ok?"
"i parked my car and now it doesn't start", "forgot to mention i was running 12psi on the stock n/a fuel system before i parked it"
"my car idles really rough and it's a pain to start"
"how do you do a compression test on a rotary?"

click, read, learn.

everything you need to know about these cars and engines is already out there on this forum. will likely take you a few tries to get it right, some people get lucky and get the engine right on the first try, assuming there aren't underlying issues that usually aren't resolved simply by rebuilding the engine.

i had to rebuild my first engine 3 times to figure out what semi uncommon problems can happen with these engines. electrolysis eating through the aluminum into the spark plugs and exhaust ports for example, something the inexperienced will likely pass over. many people think they are smarter than they think they are, i had 12 years of experience as a dealer technician, factory trained. i felt very humbled with my first experience with one of these motors.

MadScience_7 12-14-11 05:57 PM

A side question might be what kind of turbo could you use to only get 3-4psi efficiently?

RotaryEvolution 12-14-11 06:10 PM

or keep it boosting that low. even the series 5 wastegate might let you get away with 5psi on a stock setup with wastegate porting.

MadScience_7 12-14-11 06:20 PM

It would require custom manifolds and all that jazz, but are there any physically smaller turbos for low boost? Maybe something designed for a Honda or something?

I ask because I have been wanting to do this for a while. However, my 2 big problems are that I would want to keep functional aux ports and need to stay emissions legal. So I need a small frame turbo that can fit under the N/A intake manifold and behind the air pump. Is there such a thing?

Thanks
Andy

hkp 12-14-11 07:13 PM

dude this is all crazy talk now, give up on boosting that car and go buy a turbo model.

RotaryEvolution 12-14-11 07:34 PM

the only way to limit boost is by enlarging the wastegate. of course a smaller turbo at a higher boost level will be pushing less air so that is a comparable comparison.

Why when I have all the parts I need so far besides the fuel system...I'm not one to give up on a project...

If you've got everything else for this project... Then why would you want to "skimp out" on the fuel system? When it comes to boosting... You better make SURE that you've got enough fuel. Wouldn't it suck to dump a bunch of time and not enough money into your project and then "pop" the engine because you ran too lean?
