BNR Stage 3, 4. When does it spool up

I'm thinking of going BNR stage 3 or 4. My question is at what RPM does this start spooling up and at what RPM fully spool? Also, how is the response of the spool after those RPM if you go on/off throttle? thanks.

Check out Brians websight http://www.bnrturbos.com/2ndGen.htm
And call him up. Hes real cool guy more than willing to answer any questions about his turbos.

on my stage III I was getting spool up by 2.5k rpm and was very responsive. I still don't have my car tuned but even untuned durring the breakin I was getting boost way before 3k rpm when I was trying to stay out of it for the breakin.

samperry007 04-02-06 12:45 PM

I have a stage 4 and it hits 7psi by 3200-3500 RPM on an untuned car. I am very pleased with the turbo and Brian is a great guy to deal with. I called him from Iraq and he answered all of my questions.

NICE!!!
that spools almost as fast as mine!!
stock turbo on a 6 port motor...

adrock3217 04-02-06 01:46 PM

And, 88rxn/a, that's on his turbo(4 port) motor I'm guessing. I would suppose the 6port motor will spool it even faster..? So it could spool just as fast, if not quicker than yours. :-D

--MAstermind-- 04-02-06 03:03 PM

thats a fantastic spoolup...BUT is ur car ported? because i dont desire to do any porting...and id like to hit the 350hp range.... and spooling at that speed is EXACTLY what im looking for! ill be giving him a call!

Check out the bnr site. theres something on there they made 400+ whp on a stage 5. You should be able to make 350 on stock ports.

Sideways7 04-02-06 05:46 PM

Stage 5? Hadn't heard anything about that one yet. Is it still based on our turbos, or is that the GT 35/40 hybrid hes working on?

they made 400whp on the stage 4 I dont think they have a stage 5...

hondahater 04-02-06 05:51 PM

I'll be shooting for that 400hp mark on my stage 4, standalone, and streetport but don't know if it will happen but if I get close I'll still be happy.

SwiftTone 04-02-06 07:58 PM

Thank you for the responses. The reason why I wanted to ask members is that i want real world opinions.

I want to make about 380whp, I do both drags and autox equally and I'm just trying to choose a turbo that would be a good ballance for both types of driving. I've thought about the GT38RS(disco potato). They spool up realy quick, but max out at around 320whp.

What stage would you guys recommend for me?

-efini- 04-02-06 08:02 PM

Sry about the stage 5...typo.

They made +400 Whp on a stage 4.

I would go with the BNR, people have had good experiences with them, and plus the guy who makes em is on THIS forum. I plan on running a stage 4 when i get around to it. Im hoping to make +350Whp on stock ports. As for the garrett Gt series turbos, yea there sick and all, but damn, to run it, you have to get a custom mani, wastgate, downpipe, and custom feed/return lines. fuck that.

hondahater 04-02-06 09:13 PM

I wouldn't go disco potato if i where you, those things are small as shit. The stage IV should get you there with the right mods or maybe go with something like a full 60-1 setup.

SwiftTone 04-02-06 09:49 PM

whats a 60-1 setup? Sorry for n00b questions, but I dont really know much technicals about turbos. thanks

-efini- 04-02-06 11:28 PM

A 60-1 is a t4 compressor blade. A fulle 60-1 setup meaning a t4 turbo, with appropiate manifold, external wastegate, and downpipe...preaty exspensive.

SmogSUX 04-03-06 01:45 AM

How the hell are you guys doing this?! I have stage 3 with 3" back exhaust and a straight intake to an HKS filter. (No afm since I'm running Mircotech) Had my car tuned by Steve Kahn and it sees FULL boost at 3500 rpm...I ran into some issues about the wastegate spring not being strong enough so I couldn't go past 11 psi where I made 300 rwhp with the ignition breaking up at 7K+ Hopefully I'll get all those issues worked out and make 350 rwhp at 16 psi :D

if you patient looking for one you can find really killer deals on the forsale section on these setups. A guy just sold his 60-1 setup (witch included EVERYTHING) for 925 shipped. I should have hopped on it but just got my bnr stage IV so I descided against it and my wife would have gotten pissed off as well :) but 925 is the same price as the stage IV and can make more hp potentially. Also there was a guy selling his td07 18a witch can support almost the same hp as a 60-1 for around 600 for mani, wg and turbo.

So smogsux what did you do to combat the problem with the wg opening up to early? I told brian I wanted to hold boost so he kept the hole that jrat (this is jrats old turbo) made further up on the wg actuator arm. He also welded a turn buckle on the arm so that i can change the arm length thus creating even more spring preload as well as putting an external spring on it for further resistance. He said the wg was now set to about 12psi so with my boost controller I should esily hit 15-17 psi. here is a pic.

Thanks for clearing that up about the 60-1 thingy. Is the 60-1/T4 compressor blade supposed to be pretty beefy compared to other aftermarket turbos? Also, is this why they call it a "hybrid" turbo because they take a compressor blade form another turbo and stick it into a stock one? What is a "P" trim? I've also heard of "O" trim and have no idea what they're talking about.

they are talking about building boost not FULL boost

yes the reason they call it hybrid is because they are taking a compressor from a bigger turbo and putting it on the stock hotside witch is smaller than a ptrim. Since the hotside is so much smaller it doesn't flow as much thus reducing the overall hp gain that a full turbo upgrade can achieve however with the bnr stage 4 he mills out the hotside to fit a ptrim wheel witch allows for better flow thus uping the hp to the 380-400mark.

samperry007 04-08-06 01:54 PM

yes, mine is on a ported motor.

Bryan@BNR 04-10-06 12:47 AM

Hey all.

The external sping is an enexpensive way to extract more boost out of the factory wastegate actuator. If you do this to your actuator, you must check what kind of tension you have or else you will pop your engine if you don't have it set up correctly. You must hook a boost guage up to the wastegate and check for when the arm opens.

The expensive way to get more boost is to replace the actuator with one with higher spring pressure. This will be a bit more expensive b/c the actuator must be adapted to the turbocharger. I think if you are looking for 400 RWHP, the spring pressure should be based at 12-13 psi w/o a boost controller or possibly a bit more.

Having more sping pressure on your wastegate actuator, you will notice better spool up time and better overall power over the standard actuator.

cant you compensate it with an electric boost controller?
i know the hks evc 3 and up is suppose to "swing" the wastegate open by keeping it shut until last mintue...

Problem with the BNR turbos are, they tend to blow the wastegates open at higher boost pressures, so the EBCs are powerless to stop this. Bryan is now aware of the problem and I believe he ships all NEW turbos with stronger springs. Those of us that had older BNR turbos had to get creative with turnbuckles, washers, or some other means of tightening the spring pressure.

My BNR stage 4 seemed to make about 7-10 ish in the early 3000 range with full boost (17) somewhere in the hood of 4500. I never got around to really getting the spring set right (it was sitting at about 7 PSI), so I would lose boost as the RPMs continued to climb.
