bigger intercooler

i'm ready to buy from e-bay an ic (32x12x3)i don't have bigger turbo,i run the stock and i wonder if i'm gonna have turbo-lag.i just need to relocate the ic.maybe i must search for something smaller?

rotaryracer1 09-15-06 01:55 PM

do more research before you just go and buy some off the wall intercooler. do a search using the "search" function at the top of the page to see what others are using on their rx7's.

look You're looking at this:
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...l/c40aa219.jpg

and it will end up like this: from CRACKHEADMEL's thread
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...l/5146fe4b.jpg

this is what I bought: 27x5.5x2.5

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...C/IMG_0058.jpg

and this is what it looks like on a stock bumper:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...C/IMG_0064.jpg

and this is my other bumper:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...C/IMG_0030.jpg

Painted intercooler and bumper:

after posting those pics I think YOU can tell that the intercooler you are looking at is WAY too big............look at all the IC you lose behind the bumper?? kinda pointless unless you cut your bumper.....

ΝΙΚΟΣ 09-16-06 09:10 AM

looks very nice.i don't care about the bumber at all.i just wonder what's the biger intercooler i can use with the stock turbo.i just don't want to have turbo lag..... :wallbash:

J-Rat 09-16-06 09:21 AM

You will, its a function of how much air that stocker can move (not much).

JWteknix 09-16-06 09:22 AM

u shouldnt have very much lag on stock turbo

J-Rat 09-16-06 09:23 AM

I disagree.. The lag will be there. Might not be critical, but it will be noticeable.

ΝΙΚΟΣ 09-16-06 09:35 AM

i'm thinking about 27x5,5x2,5 now... :wallbash:

ΝΙΚΟΣ 09-17-06 09:33 AM

nobody had fmic with the stock turbo? :wallbash:

Madrx7racer 09-17-06 12:44 PM

mine was on stock turbo......then the FMIC was stolen and I'm working on doing another FMIC setup......all on stock turbo.

Black91n/a 09-17-06 02:01 PM

Having a larger intercooler than the opening in the bumper is pointless. There might be a slightly smaller pressure drop across it, but there'll be more lag, and it's not going to cool the air as much as a smaller one completely in the airflow. This is a mistake I see happening all the time, most people don't think of it that way, they think bigger = better and forget that there needs to be air flow across it.

Also when going FMIC you need to make sure you have excess cooling capacity. The FMIC partially blocks the air to the rad, and it heats that air up, so the rad has less airflow, and the air it does see is hotter, so the rad doesn't work as well and you're much more likely to overheat.

Madrx7racer 09-17-06 02:03 PM

you can cut the bumper like this but like Black posted above, it's not necesssarily better.......

Madrx7racer 09-17-06 02:15 PM

i would make a bumper with a HUGE opening if I were to run this IC...........but then again I consider that FMIC a race application FMIC and aesthetics as not important in that case......let me find a pic of the race application.

Madrx7racer 09-17-06 02:25 PM

HA!!!!!!!!! found it:.....748 HP car.............I can see where a HUGE intercooler is beneficial when running a HUGE turbo...........but I doubt anyone is going to be hitting anything close to that number

...so with 27x5,5x2,5 you haven't lag.right?

Madrx7racer 09-19-06 02:24 PM

I wish I could tell you...............my IC and pipes were stolen Before I finished the install so i never even got to drive it..........As soon as I have it running I'll be posting my thoughts on it and vids of whatever I feel like taking vids of.........I honestly don't know about the lag on my IC setup yet.

chris28 09-19-06 04:17 PM

this is off topic, but does anyone happen to know what lip that is in the pic that madrx7racer posted? i really like the look of that, it still looks stock, which is what I want. thanks

Madrx7racer 09-19-06 04:27 PM

www.corksport.com Border Type II.........i have more pics but photobucket isn't working for me.

chris28 09-19-06 07:50 PM

thanks, but is it discontinued? I can't find it on the site, and this would be going on an 87, so none of the lips on their site would fit without modification.
