beeping noise

It stops when I turn the car off and back on. It starts randomly while driving normaly, and doesn't go off till I turn off the car. My speedometer line came loose while driving earlier so I think that might be it but want to be sure before I disregard the sound. This thing has given me enough trouble I'm about ready for that LS1 swap and just do away with whatever may be wrong with this motor that I don't completely understand, but I would really rather stay with the smaller motor, cause that's more what I'm into and love turbos and whatnot. Thanks in advance for any help offered.

what kind of beep is it
like: - - - - two beeps pause two beeps (edit: wont let me put a space between my lines
or: _ _ _ _ constant beep

rx7idgit 01-18-06 02:09 AM

constant like beep...beep...beep...beep...etc.

You want to swap over to a chevy engine just because you don't understand the car? Jesus, I wish smallblock swap kits didn't exist for this chassis, they give idiots an exuse to run away.

That said, dumping in a domestic engine probably won't fix the problem, it sounds like a wiring bug to me.

Sounds like someone didn't read the FAQ....

BlueTII 01-18-06 05:47 AM

It is most likely your power steering ECU. If it doesn't see a speed signal it will beep.

rx7idgit 01-18-06 02:01 PM

They said that I need a new throttle cable cause mine is broke, 190 installed. And they said that should make it stop beeping.

DirkyDirka 01-18-06 02:07 PM

my car was beeeping but i found out it was cause i had no oil xD well low oil but ya so check that out too....everytime i turned it would beep then id go straight and itd stop sometimes >_> just an idea

rx7idgit 01-18-06 02:29 PM

it only does it after the car has been on for a while, and I check my oil every time I get gas... could be low oil pressure though, having that checked out too.

Please read the FAQ for FC sticky thread before posting. It has many of the commonly asked questions such as the one you started this thread with.

Again:( The following things can cause warnings in FC:

Power steering computer (see the FAQ for FC sticky thread for what the beeps mean)
Key in the ignition with the door open
Lights on and the door open
Over rev buzzer
Low oil buzzer
Low coolant buzzer.

Beeps generally are the power steering computer. Of course if you actually read the sticky threads at the top of this section then you might already know this. You would probably also know that without the speedo working, the power steering computer will beep an error code, as it does not know how fast the car is going.

And please sell the car now. If you are so clueless that you are ready to rip out the motor and stick a V8 in because you have a couple of beeps (that are not even related to the motor) then you need to get a different car... perhaps a Honda or Volkswagon would be a better choice as they are designed for the mass consumer.

I have a 5 beeps myself, if it annoys me too much i just disconnect the computer which disables my power steering but someitmes the beeps arnt worth it.

Reading the FAQ helped me find out what the beeps ment but i still dont know how to fix it, i've been told to it could be my steering wheel is misaligned but there are a few things that could be the cause of the beeps.

Find out exaclty how many times it beeps then go from there

5 beeps does indicate the steering wheel has been mis-installed and the steering position sensor is not working correctly.

Do you have an aftermarket steering wheel on the car???

rx7idgit 01-18-06 04:32 PM

If I wanted a Honda or a Volkswagon then I would have gotten one, I,ve posted many problems I've had and now I found I need a tranny cause my shifting problem is being caused by bad syncros and bearings, and that is just a little bit discouraging considering how much I want to do to the car and how much I've spent on getting it running a way that I'm content with I'de had my front mount already.

Nope, its stock. I'm going to pull it off to see if its aligned right but i doubt anyone else would have pulled the stock wheel.

The most common thing is the position sensor bushing. What you are looking for is there is a round (about 1 inch dia) plastic bushing, that has two 3/16 inch tabs that stick up about a quarter inch or so. These pins that stick up, match up to the back of the steering wheel (or hub adapter if an aftermarket steering wheel is used).

Most often, the wheel gets removed, and when it gets reinstalled, the pins are not aligned with the holes in the back of the wheel. So then they get pushed/smushed down and press the whole bushing down against the position sensor jamming it and pushing it out of alignment. Then the power steering computer throws the error code, as it is only getting an intermittent signal as the bushing and sensor are out of alignment (and often the turn signals don't turn off as well after you complete a turn).

So that is what I would be looking at first.

If the wheel is aligned properlly with the position sensor bushing, then I would be looking at either a bad power steering CPU (if the turn signals do work fine), or a unplugged position sensor or a Bad position sensor (in that order).

Here is a picture of the sensor. You can see the two tabs that I mention as well as the alignement location:

Yes, but unplugging it on a fuctioning system will disable the entire power steering system and add considerable wheel effort.

loquin23 01-19-06 10:38 AM

the system is allready shot and drives just like there is no power stering anyways .. thanks icemark
