Average MPG for a 2nd gen RX7?

I checked the FAQ but i didnt see it in there, could anyone tell me the average MPG?

powrdby13B 08-25-04 05:10 PM

well, the window sticker says 17/24 for NA and i think like 17/23 for tii... but that sure isn't what i get... but then again, i don't drive quite like the people that made the window sticker... and i run ported motors in all of my rxs now...

whtshdw25 08-25-04 05:15 PM

i heard anywhere from 15-17city and 21-23 highway and i think if you port it itll go up to about 19 city and 25 highway, is that right?

1987RX7guy 08-25-04 05:17 PM

I get around 20-21 with around 60% highway driving. 89 GTU with a rebuilt engine running around 30k miles into it. Full uncollected exhaust and a cone filter while I refab my CAI.

Ahh, ok. thanks alot.

inflatablepets 08-25-04 05:19 PM

I average 23-25 driving nicely, but 20 or so when I ream the car.

mazpower 08-25-04 05:30 PM

My half-bridge TII gets about 20 mpg on the freeway, driven reasonably. When I'm driving around town its more like 15 mpg.

ddub 08-25-04 05:36 PM

I get like 16 and that's with mostly city and a little freeway.

coldfire 08-25-04 05:54 PM

about 23-25 mpg combined highway city. going off how much the pump tells me (volume) and my trip odometer, i think i can get up to 28 mpg on the highway...

the things i noticed made a big difference was:
1) connected my O2 sensor that was disconnected when i bought the car
2) adjusted my TPS to 1k ohm, idle to 750, timing to spec
3) straight exahust with stock manifold

and right now i am shooting flames like no tommorow! lol
once i get the SAFC put in i'm interested to see what happens to fuel consumption...

oh yeah, one more thing to add: if you are worried about this, you bought the wrong car :)
but hey, i get decent consumption, so you never know...

Healeyguy 08-25-04 07:18 PM

23-25 mpg combined highway city is about right with mine too...

Impreza2RX7 08-25-04 07:26 PM

I get about 20mpg on the highway, and roughly 15 sround town. This goes down to about 10-12mpg when I'm completely reaming my car. :)

Jodoolin 08-25-04 07:26 PM

Consistant 19 city and 24 highway in a '90 vert with 3k on Atkins re-build.. not bad given the weight gain over an NA

ECKO1980 08-25-04 07:34 PM

I seem to get about 17-19 in a lightly modded 87 TII and thats with mostly city and some freeway. I could proably get better but I cant keep my foot out of it lol

Relisys190 08-25-04 07:57 PM

Average for a bone stock Rx-7, let's say N/A IIRC was 17/21?

I seem to get about 16/19 with 30%-40% WOT input during the tank of fuel.

drcoopster 08-25-04 08:03 PM

Combined about 24-26 mpg, maybe 75/25 highway/city. All stock except for K&N air filter.

IDIGATIT 08-25-04 08:14 PM

rx7+mpg= shit

Hehe, my wife gets ticked about fuel consumption, but oh well. I was getting ~17mpg when I first got the car, but get ~20-23mpg depending on how I drive (one redline a day is the minimum). I've fixed up all my exhaust leaks, built a better intake setup, adjusted the TPS, and done a reground on everything (which is highly recommended, made everything smoother.) I also replaced the driveline fluids with Royal Purple gear lube, which keeps the tranny temps way down, and it all operates much smoother. My 3rd gear was crunchy when I got it, but now acts perfectly normal.

I idle at 500 now, but would like to pump it up to 750, how is this normally done? I don't trust the manuals on this kind of thing. :D

Flobb 08-25-04 09:12 PM

My 86 GXL gets 18-20.

My 10th AE gets, I don't know cause I've only had it a week. :p:

91 na - full street port - 22mpg
89 vert - fresh (like on third tank) about 17, has same port job, not yet dialed in
91 vert - ~ - does not run
04 rx8 - its a slow pig wish I never spent the moolah
rx-3 - about 14 mpg, getting ready to restore over the winter
87 Tii - 19 on old motor
97 explorer - 14 mpg (its all wheel drive)

Tak86 08-25-04 09:29 PM

not bad. thanks

Gawd, how do you manage to spend quality time with each of those family

i've been getting anywhere from 15(city) to 24-25(highway)

~my 5/6ports are fubar however, so i'm just dumping fuel after 6k :/ (only usually happens during city driving)

WAYNE88N/A 08-25-04 10:50 PM

Woo hoo, 28 to 28.25, last three fillups. No porting, stock rebuild, no cats, couple of romps a day...90% highway...

Why do we have these threads every couple of weeks? It's not like our gas mileage is getting any better, lol...Just do a search for one from '02, same numbers will be there...:)

coldfire 08-25-04 10:50 PM

oh, i forgot to mention that i have an NA...kind of hard to get 28 mpg on a TII :)

i am pretty sure i will be able to get 30+ mpg with the SAFC installed...

lol, so true.

yeah, the thing with these cars as a few people have mentioned is that it is hard to resist just giving it a good amount of throttle. i mean, i didn't by this car to save gas and putter around....that's what my civic is for :)

now that's just rude^
you can't be ALL serious...but that's a discussion for another thread i guess.

lol, Sorry, i always forget about the search fuction until its too late.

Cybaster 08-25-04 11:13 PM

16-19..... city/highway

i hate you guys =P
well, ok, TII =P

hey, a redline a day keeps the rebuild away

ok ok... yeah, and that greddy does not help (well u know what though... it actually did..... my stock turbo, with pre-cat air pump... i was getting like 14-16) but after i swapped (still 1200 idle... 2 extra secondary injectors on when boost, no air pump, no ACV, no pre-cat.... GETTING BETTER MPG) weird huh?

d7n7master 08-25-04 11:54 PM

Only had it a month - '88 na vert. One run to San Diego, all freeway - 240 miles & it was below 1/4 tank when I fueled up. - 22.3 mpg. But - around town - maybe 15. Wierd though, I only filled 10.6 gal to FULL??? I thought it had a 18 gal. tank...
That last 1/4 tank must be DEEP :rlaugh:

WAYNE88N/A 08-26-04 12:11 AM

Lol, it is, on mine when the gauge reads 1/4, I've visually verified almost a half-tank of gas. I guess Mazda doesn't want you to run out...

Cybaster 08-26-04 12:25 AM

wow, my 1/4 tank is like 14-15 gals.....

uRizen 08-26-04 06:13 AM

Mine isn't quite that bad, but my guage is below empty now, and I just popped the tank open to clean the pump sock and it has at least a 1/4 in there still. I just go by teh gas light, it's always been accurate.
