Anybody has info on the Road Race Headers from RB?

Hi,

I previously inquired about the secondary injectors, and how to make them work without the air pump and/or cats.

I was directed to this topic:

https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generati...itches-907824/

A great method, but more trouble that I would want to deal with. Besides, it still keeps the air pump in place...

Now, I have found that the Road Race headers from RB have a pick up tube that makes the actuators work without anything behind the header.

RX7 1986-1992: Exhaust - Headers: Road Race Header - 86-88 RX-7 -

I called them and ask them about it, and they confirmed that they work. I even asked that if I just install the headers, and nothing after them (no pipe at all) if the actuators will work, and he confirmed.

I just wanted to know if anybody had any info, reviews or experience with this model to know how are they.

Thanks.

Very interesting, never saw that
I have the 89-92 road race header w/o tube installed. it does have a small plugged tube, may need to open it up and give it a try.
I left my airpump alone: not too heavy, very little drag, and it reliably actuates the 5/6 ports every single time without messing with electric pumps, etc.
I would think the RB header would actate the actuators at different rpm's based on how much downstream backpressure there is.

KAT_Ayanami 11-13-12 04:16 PM

It has a tube? Could you maybe connect it to the actuators for me with a vacuum/heater hose for a minute and let me know how it goes?

I know that the air pump drag and weight is minimum. But we have a rally car and we are trying to get a little more power out of it for the next season since we have a cage and the car now weighs 2,900 lbs................
So any HP I can get and any lbs I can shed will help :)

Link to the car just for kicks!

So, I guess nobody has them?

They are quite pricy new though for what they are... so I do not blame anybody :)

Natey 11-18-12 10:51 AM

I ran RB True Duals for years. Hook up that tube. :)

One thing to mention is the day I put my stock exhaust back on I TRIPPED at how much heavier the RB stuff is.

Natey 11-18-12 10:53 AM

Here's some useful info:
Racing Beat 1986-92 RX-7 Road Race "Dual" Exhaust System

.

KAT_Ayanami 11-18-12 12:37 PM

Thanks for the link Natey. But I have already read a ton about their headers on their website.

The concern that I have, is that a full exhaust costs over $1,200!! Which I believe is crazy.

So, since the car is for racing purposes, I wanted to get the headers only, and then add two straight pipes to the back with regular mufflers.

I just wanted to make sure that the pick up tube actually opens the actuators without having any cats or other restrictions behind it (which on the stock car are the ones that creates the back pressure).

Thanks!

DaBrkddy 11-18-12 01:24 PM

Thank God somebody finally figured this out... I have been hurting my brain over the idea of changing to a road race header for years. This seals it, I'm getting one.

I wonder why I never thought of just calling racing beat...

You should check at the track you race at to see if they have a dB limit.
I have a true dual system with presilencer and collected before a single muffler
It was about 120db without presilencer which is too loud for most racing
It's at about 100db now with presilencer and dumpy tip(still really loud)

I don't have a pressure pick up tube yet.
I'm going to weld one in
The RB setups are not back pressure pick ups
They face the flow of the exhaust and run off the pressure pulses

Generally if you have enough backpressure to operate the aux ports it is not free flowing enough to be considered an upgrade or "performance" exhaust

Does your class not let you remove interior? All the rear carpet/sound deadening/etc weighs a LOT more than the airpump/drag...

Yeah, it is coming out in a couple of days. I am actually trying to open a FS thread with all the pieces in case somebody wants to pick them up... but the MODs want me to list all the small trim pieces and give them a price.....

TougeMonster, do you know how many dbs is the car stock? I currently have the stock full exhaust with only one the last cat in place, and it is really loud already.

Molotovman 11-18-12 05:13 PM

I sold one of those headers with the tube not too long ago to a local.

TougeMonster 11-18-12 07:17 PM

My stock setup was real quiet.

It was a stock port s4 NA it was about 68db ish at cruise and 80db er so at wot

Now I idle around 90db er so on a half bridge

Customisbetter 11-18-12 07:24 PM

I have the dual road race header with the tube and it works wonderfully.

Here is a vid...

KAT_Ayanami 11-18-12 07:47 PM

Thanks for the videos people.

I guess I am going to try the headers with two straight pipes to the stock mufflers and see how it goes....

I cant pay $300 for the headers and then $300 more for the silencer.... so I will see how it goes like that...

Molotov, I do not know how can you be so butthurt about not trading my wide body for your rb headers, hood or used turbo brakes.

When I talked to you, you said that you had NO idea of the condition of the brake calipers. And that the headers were cut I and hacked together I do not remember on what part.

Now you keep following me around the forum saying that you sold the parts and that I still have the kit. I do not care.

First, I did not end up using turbo brakes since I am using 4 bolt spindles for my rally tires.
Second, your headers did NOT have the pick up tube. They were the older model.
Third, you wanted $200 freaking bucks for your turbo hood, which needed work.

It is ok if you want to continue, but I find it kind of dumb ;)

It's because you're renegger and you wasted my time. The first time we talked you wanted the new calipers I had, the hood and header. I valued your trade at $350 because it's what you had it listed for on another site. You still wanted $400 and told me my parts were overpriced. I see how much experience you've had dealing with RX-7's and their parts now.

I'm glad you could waste my time bickering about the calipers then. I had 3 different options for you.

Second, your headers did NOT have the pick up tube. They were the older model.
Oh Really? I'm glad you'll be paying the full price plus more for one due to your ignorance.

Third, you wanted $200 freaking bucks for your turbo hood, which needed work.
It was aluminum with a scoop in good condition that had no dents. It was a fair price for a piece that just needed paint.

I'm done now, you just wasted my time. I'm not butthurt, just taking some of your time. After attempting to deal with you I would discourage others from doing so. In the end I got my asking prices for my parts and have happy buyers.

I've got the rb header with the pickup, it works great. 5th 6th ports are very much functional. I opted out on the silencer, bought the flange and welded a custom exhaust .

Great. Because that is what I was planning on doing :) Could you please tell me:

1- Are you using true dual exhaust?
2- What mufflers are you running?
3- How much louder is the car compared to stock?

Thanks!

So, texting back and forth for a few times is enough waste of time for you to follow me around? Thats creepy.

BTW, the problem is that you wanted me to drop my price to $350, but you would not budge on yours. Which were pretty high to begin with.

Again, you had no idea of the condition of two of the sets. And I needed to know because they were for racing purposes.
Besides, the only reason why I did not do the turbo brakes is because I found out that I needed 5 bolt spindles. Which I could not install due to my current wheels.

When we talked about the headers, you did not have or send any pictures nor gave me any info on the pick up tube.
Besides, that tube looks like a home made attachment. I do not know it RB did that tube, but it sure does not look like it.

Im glad that you are planning on stop following me around and posting on every one of my topics badmouthing me like you just did. But I somehow doubt it.
I am glad that you have such a successful life with your happy buyers. Again, the only reason I could not deal with you, is because of your high prices.

1. No
- used a y pipe to single 2.5 inch exhaust
2. Ebay muffler with aero turbine resonator rated for 3000 degrees
3. Very loud compared to stock, the header alone makes it much louder.
- looking into a more quiet muffler

KAT_Ayanami 11-27-12 01:25 PM

Thanks for the info.

Everybody is saying the same thing. Very loud.

This is a rally car project, but I do have to transit an hour and a half to Summit Point where I rallyX....

I know its going to be bothersome to drive that long with a loud car.... but furthermore, I just do not want police bothering me because of the noise.

KAT_Ayanami 11-30-12 08:04 PM

I found a great deal on Craigslist and got a Road Race Header almost new for just $120.

Now I just have to do the actuator port and give it a try :)

I looked at a few people doing this, but they do not explain much. I think I have a clear idea of how to make the pick up tube, but I just need to search and find out who has done it before and what issues have they found :)

TougeMonster 12-01-12 02:31 PM

I would just try to buy a header with a pick up tube on it already.
Im just going to copy RB style as I dont really have a RB header, its some random stainless version, not sure who made it
I know RB use a pick up tube that faces the flow and get the full pressure from the exhaust pulse, not back pressure

i didnt know they had rally x at summit point. i did a spec7 class race there once. good stuff

Luckily. I got a RB header for $100 last week. Carlos at Bilbo just finished installing the pick up tube for me.

Works great!!! And I just saved about $200 :)

I was feeling bad that I did not get Molotovman's header. But after seeing the finished product and how professional Carlos made it look. I am grateful I waited for a better deal!

But yeah. I agree with people. Its too freaking loud.... and no muffler or silencer will take that away because the noise is due to the lack of the boxy stock exhaust manifold that acts as a resonator.

Here is a pick of the finished product with the heat wrap on.

If anybody wants to get rid of the cat or the emission systems. Go to Bilbo's website and contact Carlos. He is great with RX7s!
