Any ways to cheat emissions?

Im going to get my car inspected for the first time and I dont have a cat. Just wondering if there were any ways to pass easier.

RandomHero 08-26-05 06:02 PM

Doubt it will pass without the kitty, i guess it depends on how steep the limits are. But if you want to try, make sure the plugs are nice and clean, and make sure its up to temp when you go.

staticguitar313 08-26-05 06:05 PM

drop a cat in there for the test and be done with it

Digi7ech 08-26-05 06:45 PM

Run alcohol. Do a search and you'll see some mixtures to run.

Kai 08-26-05 07:33 PM

Register it somewhere without emissions tests. I drive around emissions tight areas every day, but registered one of my non-emissions compliant cars down south.

lastphaseofthis 08-26-05 07:34 PM

just to let u know alabama is open for non emissions cars :P

Xbladr 08-26-05 07:48 PM

yea TII sleeper I am having a similair problem right now with my car. It runs too rich and just failed inspection I am trying to figure out the best way to fix the problem. The only difference is i have a stock dp and cat i have only modified the air intake and the ypipe back

Gene 08-27-05 12:36 AM

Pass without a cat? Maybe if you bring your friend Benjamin along with you to the inspection place... hah.

iceblue 08-27-05 04:45 AM

Exactly as Digi7ech stated run alcohol in your tank for the test. This is covered weekly I suggest to make more use of the search button.

J-Rat 08-27-05 10:11 AM

Shoot man, I just put my stock exhaust system on. There is also a way to gut the ACV so it pumps air directly to the cat. Although I have used alcohol in the past, its a last ditch effort, and involves a little bit of risk. Be aware of that.

I cant seem to find a good thread about this.

I read somehwere also there was a writeup in the Archive, but didnt see it either.

From the FAQs at the top of the section:

My car is having trouble passing emissions, but I have new spark plugs, filters, cats, etc. What do I do?
J-rats Recipe for cheating emissions if its ABSOLUTELY necessary:

1. Turn variable resistor to full lean, or as lean as you can get and still run.
2. Trick ACV into pumping air to the cat all the time by removing the FORWARD UPPER vac hose, and capping it.
3. Run 87 octane
4. Run your tank down till your almost empty.
5. 2-3 bottles of alcohol in the tank. Drive VERY GINGERLY to the emissions station.
6. Once you pass go, DIRECTLY to a gas station and fill up with regular unleaded.

Damn n00bs!!! (Only saying that cause your post count is 7000+) :)

piscorpio 08-27-05 04:25 PM

I have seen that many times, but I was wondering, the 87 octane does not apply to TII's, does it??

Well, ideally, yes. You want to run the lowest octane you can for the most complete combustion (and therefor lowest emissions output.)

J-Rat 08-27-05 08:09 PM

^^^ speaks much truth.. just DONT FREAKIN BOOST!

1. That does NOT describe a TurboII ACV

2. Just WHERE did the person who wrote that think the air from the airpump was going anyway?

Juiceh 08-27-05 10:15 PM

What if you have true dual exhausts? No cats obviously.. Is there any way to pass?

mcnannay 08-27-05 10:25 PM

i doubt you could pass without a cat, maybe with alcohol,

but why the hell dont you have a cat in an emission controlled state?

Juiceh 08-27-05 10:27 PM

cause it didn't have one when I got it! :rlaugh:

tIIsleeper 08-27-05 11:04 PM

Same here man.

tIIsleeper 08-29-05 09:42 PM

Where and what the hell is the variable resistor?

7romanstatesmen 08-29-05 09:59 PM

in a before-and-after session of e-testing my car with and without alchohol, the alchohol didn't reduce NOx emissions at all, whereas that is something that is catalyzed by the cats, so i don't think that you can pass that portion of the test. i don't know the exact chemistry behind it, so maybe my results were just a fluke, but beware.

This is still kind of sketchy. 2-3 bottles of alcohol? What size are the bottles?

Someone with a full standalone doesent have an ACV, or a variable resistor...

Also, why would you put regular unleaded in the car after the test? ;)

because alcohol burns VERY VERY slow

hell... put a bit kerosene in there...

Under certain conditions, the ACV will dump the air overboard, you know that!! I think that above 3750, the ACV starts dumping overboard on the TII. Looks like it dumps somewhere between 1500-2500 on the N/A.

After the test you can put whatever gas you normally run into the tank.

This is not a perfect science, its just some tricks I have used in the past to get dirty FCs through the sniffer. Remember, I didnt always have an EMS.

And if you want to get REALLY technical. The best way to pass emissions is to FIX YOUR DAMN CAR CORRECTLY!!!
