89-90 GTUs and the story behind them.
As we know Mazda produced GTUs in 89 and 90.
To my knowledge there were 1000 "89 and 100 "90's Made.
But I have heard all over different explanations.
All confusing me to bits. I personally own 2 1990 GTUs and another question popped up, Where the hell did RE-Stamped "90 GTUs come from and why did this happen? Both of mines are not restamped "L" for 90 and the 89 had "K" stamped. I have been hearing there some Restamped "90's out there. From what I heard mazda only made 10 black 90 GTUs. So anybody with thoughts/ideas on the "GTUs" post them up.
"Sticky Please."

The 2nd picture of your post is already in the options and standard features thread:

This subject has been covered quite a few times.
Maybe this will help you:
Of the 200 models sold as the 1990 model year, the majority of them were actually 1989 models re-stamped with a change to the 1990 model year VIN number but retaining the 1989 production number.
As a note, personally I have never seen a 1990 model GTUs that didn't have the strike out except ones that had been converted from 1990 GTU models. A simple give away is if it has a factory sunroof, it was not a GTUs model, but instead a conversion.
Also if it has K in the VIN it was a 1989 model, not a 1990. No if, ands, or buts on that. Nader (Funkspectrum) has a 1990 GTUs that has the re-stamped VIN model year on the firewall.
The other draw back was that the GTUs was 2765 lbs (note that the factory spec sheet said 2802 lbs, yet the window stickers said 2765) ... either way, almost 150lbs more than the 1986-1987 Sport model and about 100 lbs more than the 88 GTU. So the 14 extra HP and 4 extra ft/lbs that the S5 non turbo had barely made up for the extra weight and unfortunately it was not as quick as the S4 Sport which Car and Driver was able to get a 7 second 0-60 time with. The best stock time for a GTUs was 7.4 seconds for the 0-60. The GTUs 's 1/4 mile of 15.8 @88 was 2 tenths quicker though... since the sport only did a 16 second 1/4 mile at 87.5 MPH stock.

Originally the the GTUs was to have a normally aspirated 3 rotor engine (the 20B), but pre-production fuel mileage and cooling issues forced Mazda to go another route. Instead Mazda attempted to shorten the 0-60 times with a new 4.3 rear end ratio and .762 top gear. The GTUs was intended to be a more simple and pure version of a the RX-7. A non turbo fast and race ready street car with Air Conditioning and a AM/FM radio the only options and unlike the majority of other 1989 coupes, it did not come with a factory sunroof. Unfortunately the GTUs flopped in the prime US market with fewer than 2500 sold for its entire sub-model two year production run. North American Mazda dealers unable to understand the light weight, back to basics concept of the car; often had aftermarket glass sunroofs cut in as well as other options bolted on.

From what I can see yours is a non restamp.
The dealer installed the sunroof and probably had the VIN diamond engraved into it.I agree when the dealer decided to install aftermerket sunroofs they didn't know they were hurting the "GTUs's" feelings.
Do you have a larger picture of your whole sunroof installed?
I want to see the edges.
oh and clean your damm engine bay!

yeah, i dont see anything that shows it was restamped, and plus the sun roof has the vin,yr, and color.
haha yea, i got to give the car a complete wash and repaint, also most important of all, a tune up!!! also a new drive shaft, and it seems to being into limp mode, due to code 27.
car sat for over a year before i recently bought this baby. also had a rebuild some time ago, the irons are painted blue,..
well im just glad its a GTUs although it does thave the sun roof.

i would love that moon roof on my other non gtus fc it's large!
I always hated the stock FC sliding moon roofs because they were so short but yours looks 6 inches longer and a few wider!

as opposed to the GTUs which is the "lightest fc stock", has t2 braks, lsd, and a higher tranny gear ratio, t2 seats, t2 rims, imsa inspired.. etc..
just read icemarks post
GTUs models only came in Noble White, Blaze Red, or Brilliant Black... never Chrystal White.

Interesting that it was only the 464th RX-7 made for the 90 model year, but the white one is not a GTUs as Noble White was the only white that the GTUs was available in. The GTU was available in Crystal White in '90 however- and of course the power sunroof was an option on the 89 and 90 GTU model.
hum mabey my vin ended with 0800800 ? i have to bring the car back home to check since I cant find my paperwork! lol

Sounds about right Well it's being painted crystal white =)
out of all the people on the forums I tend to believe you a bit more ICE.
Once I get my car back home I will have more details on it.
Here is a few pics of the white GTUs I own.
After I get it back home I will have more pictures and I will finally start building the GTUs Widebody Turbo comming this next yr.I finally got all the parts I need to finish 80% of the job.It should be a beast.

Humm I know it's a GTUs possibly mistaken paint code on my part. and the car was repainted by the previous owner crystal white and funny thing even after the repaint, the paint still chips off. White FC well all White mazdas came with crappy adhesion to the stock primer. I believe because they let the primer dry to long before putting on the white paint. Anybody with a white mazda should remove all the stock white paint down to the stock 3-primer and scuff really well before applying another paint job so your paint wont chip off the primer like 95% of all white mazdas from these years.
On my 10thAE (Crystal White) I ended up stripping down to the metal on most of the body and spraying etching primer, filler primer and sealer primer before going back in with the Crystal White and then a clear coat of urethane. Not quite stock paint, but it should never peel again like the white cars do.
Anyway, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between Crystal White and Noble White unless you had them right next to each other.

Brave blue 91 automatic with no sunroof!
Those are pretty rare but didn't come with the GTUs goodies.
Crystal White Blinds me on a very nice sunny day I can barely even look at my car!!

Man, so many questions in this thread that have been answered infinity million times before. It makes my head hurt lol.
Zerox7: The glass sunroof was a dealer option and I doubt they kept track of it.
