5th gear sadness... =(

ive searched around the forums and with no luck found no solution to my problem.... and also found im not the only one with this problem....

so my shifter was very loose, 2nd gear grind, and all that good stuff (but still had all my gears).... so i thought that i might have to change the bushings.... so i did.... shifter works fine..... now i cant get into 5th gear.... thought it might be the bushings being to big or something.... so i took the top out, then bottom, then both... and still cant get into gear.... tried double clutching and even floating gears... still nothing.... i also had the 5th gear whirring noise like everyone else... but my gears were still strong (actually 5th never was strong if you know what i mean haha).... anybody have a clue what might be wrong and what i could do to fix?

hum...my shifter was loose awhile back ago. so i changed the bushing like u. but then i couldnt get in 3rd. so i just did a tranny swap. might be the tranny it self or it could be a bad syncro.srry for the typos. no sleep.

rs5047 01-24-09 01:14 PM

also when trying to force it in... ( i know bad) i can kind of hear it trying to engage... like the gearing is rubbing on something

epic 01-24-09 08:17 PM

yea im like 90% sure its the tranny. take it out (if u can on ur own) and take it to a shop and have them look at it imo. but it could be something else. still ask around man. and good luck.

bump for more ideas?

HAILERS 01-25-09 09:59 AM

Trash in the shifter. Remove the trash.

rs5047 01-26-09 09:59 AM

checked.... nothing in it

Z3r0 01-26-09 10:14 AM

can you get into reverse?

rs5047 01-26-09 11:10 AM

i can get into reverse fine.... and honestly if any of my other gears were out id be fine... but i need 5th for the sake of saving gas... i commute to school and crap

slpin 01-26-09 04:53 PM

5th gear isnt all the way to the right side

learn to shift.... just push it to the right a bit then up, not all the way to the right....

so yeah.... learn to shift

HAILERS 01-26-09 07:07 PM

And where did the old broken shifter shims/bushing go to ? The ones you replaced with new ones.

rs5047 01-27-09 12:49 PM

first of all i know how to shift... had no problems with the car until recently... 2nd... the old bushings/shims.... didnt have any.... so when i bought it, it didnt have any.... and 3rd and final update... my tranny fixed itself... i can get into 5th now....

i still dont know what happen... but im glad that its not happening anymore

Paul Spickard 01-27-09 01:00 PM

I had some trouble with shifting at one point also. It turned out to be my slave cilinder so i replaced it and added some fluid but it would still be a pain the shift and i had to bleed the clutch but one day it just started working again still really loose but im broke so it wil have to do.

rs5047 01-27-09 11:49 PM

Did you try replacing the bushing??? that was the reason my was loose.... when i changed them i found out that i had none...

Did you try Paul Spickard's suggestion? Sounds like you should be taking any help you receive pretty seriously since it'd be much easier (altho not that difficult) than a tranny pull/swap.

Paul Spickard 01-28-09 12:23 PM

Yeah thats what im thinking to it just needs to stop rainig in alabama so i have a chance to do it. wish i had a shop

What Hailers is saying is that the old one is chewed up and fell into the trans. Did the shift kit you bought come with both bushings? Also what you may do is change the trans fluid and add some kind of additive.

....... go to MAZDATRIX online and look at their FAQ. In their FAQ there is one on the shifter bushings/shims and they suggest what parts are needed.
