Would molding epoxy putty to the sleeves work instead of buying the pineapple sleeves?
Is there a risk of having the expoxy putty so close to the engine?

Yes. Personally I wouldn't trust it. I really wouldn't even trust the Pineapple sleeves, as there have been several reports of them coming loose and being injested by the engine.

Epoxy putty stick really hard and it's only on an NA so there won't be A LOT of force..

Does gasoline weaken the epxoy?
I'm just afraid it'll deteriorate like silicone.

Someone help me understand this sleeve issue better... 1) why are you trying to keep them open all the time? wont this just make the ECU run lean? 2) why not just take the valve covers off?

The stock sleeves are square ended on the inside.
They can be made to flow better, but still open & close normally.

A good heat resistant epoxy will work well but I would anchor it with a pin or screw from the outside so the expansion of the warmed up sleeve doesn’t loosen it.

I'm not sure how hot the sleeves get buy can the epoxy stand that amount of heat?

if the motor is known for injesting pineapple racing sleeves, then why on earth would you ever put epoxy glue inside the damned ones youve got? infact, i wouldnt do that to any gasoline motor!
that is a disaster waiting to happen.

glue+rotary internals= paper weight.

sorry bout that, i must keep an open mind.
you might wanna try some JB weld bond. its a two part epoxy that vulcanizes into steel, er something like that. its really f-ing strong and it will handle extreem temps. it even says on the packaging that you can weld things to it with an actual machine, stick weld or wire weld. its good sheeat!

JB weld and epoxy putty are pretty similar. I know it is strong, but I just wonder if they can withstand the heat at the port's position.

I think JB weld and most other epoxies can stand up to about 500 degrees and thats about it. I might be wrong but I have tried to use JB weld to temporaly fix an exhaust leak on my old truck and it didn't last more than an hour before it burned all up

But what is the highest temperature the sleeves get exposed to?

i honestly wouldnt mess around with anything like that.. i'd stick with the oem 6 ports, or the pineapple sleeves.

how modded is your car at this point? you COULD just remove the actuators/sleeves and all that crap and run them wide open all the time.. this is of course if your car is more than stock. The more heavily you mod your n/a, the more the sleeves and crap become a restriction.

thats where i got my info from, and its better explained in that thread... make sure IF you do this dont break anything and be careful just in case you dont like how it drives after doing that... like it says in the thread, it all comes down to what you prefer

Planning to do sleeves while I do my porting for the intake manifolds.

I really don't want to have to give up my low end torque.

That's fine then, but I'm not sure about the low end torque part. Some people say you lose it, some dont, after I did it along with the manifold porting my car seems to be faster, pull harder and transition smoother throughout the rpm range with an untuned s-afc, and this is after i was running with a tuned s-afc

But like Mazdaspeed7 said in that thread, it all comes down to what you prefer :)

If you remove them, do you get less torque or higher idle?

What's the real cons of taking them out?

Well when I removed them, ported my intake manifolds, did the TB mod and replaced my fuel lines, it was faster, smoother and pulled harder with my s-afc untuned, whereas before all of this it was tuned. So tuning the s-afc will make an even larger difference.

My idle did not go up, in fact after doing all this i broke a couple of solenoids and my car was majorly flooded, ive had some stalling/idle problems that are almost all fixed. I'm also waiting on some parts so it should all hopefully be fixed.

Was you car harder to drive?
Do you have to shift later with normal driving?

Driving didn't seem to change or when I shift. The driveability actually didn't go down, i was pretty surprised as I was expecting it to.

Oh yes, and to anyone thinking of doing this just remember, some people may not like this mod, so when taking the actuators and sleeves out be VERY CAREFUL. The screws holding the sleeves in are very tight and can strip easily, so if you aren't sure whether you're going to like it or not and may want to put it back in, keep everything in good shape. Also, once you take the sleeves out you'll need something to plug the hole with for the part that goes into the manifold and turns the sleeves (the rods i believe?) because otherwise there will be a leak. I personally tapped the hole and put in a bolt with silicone, but doing that will be perminant
