40-70 mph times...post em guys!!

Ok, tonight i whent out and bought myself a $6 stop watch, just to do this. (Big $$ :) ) First set of runs was done with 1/8 tank of fuel, and passanger. Anyways, first run, from 40 to 70 took me 4.20 seconds. It was kinda off, as i pushed the button a bit early. 2nd run it turned a 3.87. Much better. Then i filled up the gas tank, and it whent down to a 4.07, then a 4.10. Whent to dinner, and on the way home it was about 10 degrees cooler, and it turned a 3.80 with pasaanger and 24 miles on the tank of fuel. I'm shure it'll go faster, with a near empty tank, and no passanger.

So come on everyone....let me know your times. I'm very interested in a stock 89+ Rx-7s times. I know these are'nt supper accurate, but they're just a guestament. I know some people will "fudge" there times, but these are real numbers, done to the best of my ability. CJ

von 02-19-02 01:02 AM

why 40 - 70? Isnt this your PP engine. Or your 3rd Gen. I will do it lata and make a new post for ya.

pp13bnos 02-19-02 01:06 AM

I'm sorry...i did'nt even post what gear or what car! I was in 2nd gear, in my n/a 90. Basically its from 40mph to 8k rpms...can't remember what rpms it starts at. CJ

RETed 02-19-02 01:13 AM

Standard 40-70mph times are usually done in 3rd gear and punch from 35mph.&nbsp No wonder your times were so godamn fast! :)

Stock FC turbo - 6.5 seconds
Mildly modded FC turbo - 5.45 seconds

This was 35mph cruise in 3rd gear...punch gas...click stop watch when needle hit 40mp...clicked again when speedo hit 70mph.

pp13bnos 02-19-02 01:17 AM

You know, i was reading the 3rd gen one 40-70 mph times, and i noticed the same thing. :D I feel like a moron.:D Anyways, tomorow i'll get some 3rd gear times. I'm shure it'll be alot slower...but i'm still interested in everyones 2nd gear ones too! sorry for the confusion. CJ

RETed 02-19-02 01:20 AM

Hey, not your problem!&nbsp Not many of us have enough revs to do it in 2nd gear!!!

-Ted

BOOSTD 7 02-19-02 02:22 AM

I didn't realize anybody still used this. I like 40-120 better :D

RETed 02-19-02 03:23 AM

120???&nbsp Wanna guess how fast you're going to get throw in jail?!?!?&nbsp "Uh, officer, I was trying to get some times so I could post them on the Internet..."

-Ted

87GTR 02-19-02 10:09 AM

yeah they should be done starting in 3rd click start at 40 and time to 70.

but I mostly race 70 - 140 whos got the top end :)

Blame it on the way too tall n/a gearing. Im doing 73 mph at the top of 2nd, with smaller than stock tires @ 8500 rpm.

ka8legend 02-19-02 03:30 PM

You got any times Mazdaspeed7? Don't recall my 40-70, but my 30-60 is around 4 and 0-30 is 2.5.

pp13bnos 02-19-02 03:40 PM

I only got a two chances, but with a big pasanger (Marine buddy) 1/2 tank of fuel i turned it in a 5.66, then a 5.7. I'll do some more when i have time/open road. Later, CJ

von 02-19-02 03:47 PM

.. I like the second gear ones better. I will try that.

NZConvertible 02-19-02 03:55 PM

If you want to be accurate, you should do 6 runs back and forth (3 in each direction) on the same piece of road and average the times. This cancels out wind direction, road gradient and human (button pressing) error, which can all make a huge difference to your times.

pp13bnos 02-19-02 06:16 PM

I also like 2nd gear, because it makes use of where a n/a engine makes its power. 3rd gear is more for the mid range kinda power. 2nd is nothing but top end. Later, CJ

Yeah, but 3rd is generally used by magazine testers for roll-on acceleration testing because it's a better indication of an engines all-round ability. You spend much more time in the mid-range than up top. Plus you have to have a fixed criteria for comparision with other cars.

pp13bnos 02-20-02 08:50 PM

ReTed, what do you consider a mildly modded turbo car. It appears they're slightly faster than me. The average i get is a 5.7 or so. CJ

This was in my 1987 Turbo II.&nbsp Stock exhaust, cone air filter, boost controller set @ 10psi (with FCD). :)

You're running slighly taller gears, which would equate to just about the same power - at least 200 to the wheels!&nbsp That's some ride!

-Ted

pp13bnos 02-20-02 09:24 PM

I realy doubt i'm making 200 to the wheels, it would be nice though :) But next month, after i install a Hi-6 i plan on taking it to the dyno. Then i can have some solid numbers. CJ

pp13bnos 02-20-02 09:26 PM

I know there are some stock 89+ Rx-7s are out there...can some one please post some numbers! CJ

Felix Wankel 02-25-02 10:52 PM

Mine averaged in the high 4's :D

pp13bnos 02-25-02 11:55 PM

Hey, you have a turbo car. :)

Agent_D 02-26-02 12:56 AM

i did a run yesterday in my 86 n/a, all i got is a intake and modded TB, stock exhaust, 2440lbs, 5.12 gears i didnt have a stop watch or anything but it was ~6.5, i wasnt hitting the gas at 35mph, i got it to 40mph held it there for a second and then mashed the pedal, now that i know you punch it at 35mph ill get another time :) i also did a 5th gear 40-70mph the other day, i dont remember the time but it wasnt too terrible :)

oh BTW- if i had to try to hit 70mph in 2nd, lol well you can see what i mean having 5.12 gears lol :)

pp13bnos 02-26-02 09:08 PM

today in 3rd i hit a 5.54. Anyone else? Someone with a stock 2nd gen please hook me up. CJ

Damn doing 40 in 5th? My BPU series 5 can't even do 60 in 5th. :(

mguire 02-27-02 12:03 AM

Hey CJ, when's the next RPNW meeting anyways, next wed at Round Table?

Oh yeah, I did the 40-70 both ways. My car is an 86 na with regular exhaust and intake mods only. (K&N with cold air box, RB headers, high flow cat, RB mufflers, TB mod, advanced timing, RB underdrive pulley). I (185 lbs)was alone with half a tank of gas and my bicycle in back (it fits!), and was as accurate as possible.

2nd gear: 5.0 sec
3rd gear average: 6.1 sec (n=3)

I only did one 2nd gear run because my car dramatically cut out (no power, like running out of gas) at 7500 rpm before blasting up to 8000rpm. probably would have been a 4.7 sec run or less. My car sometimes cuts out a bit anywhere past 6800 rpm in 3rd or 4th gear, but never as bad as this time. WTF? I think I may need a new fuel pump or something.

You must be running the Pineapple Racing sleeves. How do you like those by the way?

-Eric

pp13bnos 02-27-02 01:00 AM

To be honest....i put them in when i had the motor ported...so i could'nt realy say for shure. But every little bit helps.

The next meeting is the first wensday of March....i think its the 6th but not shure.

Later, CJ

egads! 6,800 in 4th gear! Where are you doing these top speed runs? :D

Manolis_D 02-27-02 01:36 AM

I've got a friend with a 1991 NA... I'll try to see if we can get some data by the end of the week :)

wai 02-27-02 04:58 AM

87 TII ,5.7, 6.1 and 5.9sec (3rd gear@7psi)
here is my mods:intake ,open exhaust,f-con ,boost controller....

hey that would be great! Thanks, CJ

XLR8 02-27-02 12:37 PM

my times are not great in my 85......but an 87tii with more mods then NASA will be sweet...

MaxRX7 02-27-02 02:04 PM

need to get a stopwatch and open road (might as well go top speed) :bigthumb:

mguire 02-27-02 03:41 PM

To be legal I should say I did those runs on the Dyno, or at the track, but I-5 in northern california is my favorite road :)

pd_day 02-28-02 01:28 AM

I just did some 40-70mph runs in 3rd gear. 3 runs to be exact; they averaged out to be 7.0 sec.

I also did two 40-70mph runs in 2nd gear and it averaged 5 sec.

There were me (175lbs) and a buddy (160lbs) in the car.
I have an amp and a 10inch woofer in a box in the back.
I had 1/4 tank of gas. No spare tire or jack. Everything else in.

It's a 1990 GXL with a mazda reman with 20k miles on it.
Only mod is a cone filter and cold air duct. Stock everything else.

mguire 03-02-02 12:16 AM

Come on guys, let's get some more times!

ic3cold7 03-02-02 12:23 PM

30-60= 2.5 in 2nd and 3.6 in 3rd
40-100= 5.5 in 2nd and 7.3 in 3rd

all times using g tech

pp13bnos 03-02-02 01:23 PM

40-100 in second? you got some tall gears. CJ

pp13bnos 01-25-04 06:31 PM

Ok, I know this thread is old, but I thought with my new Rx-8 I'd post the times. Unfortunetly, I can't do a 2nd gear 40-70. 2nd gear is just a little to short. My car is %100 stock with a around 2,200 miles on it. 40-70 times are right around 5.3. I'll be doing some more runs soon.

BTW, this car feels quicker than my old 90 Rx-7 ever did. :D CJ

ill have to get a watch and measure but i think its gona be somwhre in the mid-high 4 second range. maybe low 5s. god i love being able to break the speed limit on the highway in second gear!!

pd_day 06-06-05 10:32 PM

Here is a vid of me doing a 2nd gear pull
