3rd gen tranny in T2?

I know the the T2 tranny is a good piece but the time it takes to shift is forever compared to a say... Integra. So would a 3rd gen tranny fit in a T2?
Just pondering while I was driving in my pos 91 Mirage.

sorry to bust your bubble ....it wont fit .......different trans mounts and driveshaft

Node 02-06-02 04:27 PM

short throw shifter and a heavy shif knob might help your problems.

cymfc3s 02-06-02 04:28 PM

the 3rd gen shifts the same as a 2nd gen. They are virtually identical internal, excect the dual cone syncros are different on the 3rd gens.

Damn! I've never driven or been lucky enough to ride in a 3rd gen.
but it was worth the thought.

Something to think of, the shifter is operated by the driver, it is as fast as you want it to be.

I have read articles on FD w/ FC tranny's....FC's are stronger.

hondah8er 02-06-02 05:46 PM

the turbo 2 tranny is the best Rex tranny period...and the strongest

Node 02-06-02 05:54 PM

They're the same except for 5th gear I thought. Well mounts too.
The 3rd gen has a heavy shifter. I don't know if the 2nd gen has a heavy one or not. But like I said, that could make a big difference.
Plus a short shifter, it could practically shift itself, or make it much easier.
Maybe put something heavy on your shifter to see if you like the feel.

It won't fit - adding to what everyone else has said, the input shaft is about 1/2" shorter on the FD trans.

Not to mention the different size and type clutch...

mazdaspeed7 02-06-02 08:58 PM

To clarify a little on the clutch, the FD uses a pull-type pressure plate, while the FC uses a push type. The pull type is INFERIOR as higher power levels compared to the puch type. So the FC tranny is better for high hp applications, and everything else than the FD tranny. The only thing the FD tranny has going for it is the Powerplant frame, which you cant use on anything but an FD anyways(possibly a Miata).

We had a 3rd gen tranny on 2nd gen engine. All you need to do is move the mount and have the drive shaft fitted. The 3rd gen is better plus the clutch system is not the same as 1st and 2nd gen so it would be a nice swap.

cymfc3s 02-06-02 09:27 PM

You can change the input shaft, convert the clutch over, blah. Big waste of effort. The T2 tranny is just as good if not better.
