Project #29 10th AE

6 Attachment(s)
Yes this is my 29th Rx7. I turned 29 this year, I will be having my 10th wedding anniversary and believe it or not this summers project will be a 10th AE. I am still on the fence as to the fate of the car.. I need to decide if this will be a restore, or resto-mod.... Initial instinct was to straight up restore the car due to the fact that it is pretty clean. BUT the car has 152,000 miles so the draw as a collector car is pretty low.. I will probably lean resto-mod.

As for the car it is in pretty nice shape overall, the interior is nearly mint other then the 10thae floormats which may not be salvageable..

There is some paintwork needed on the front bumper as it has some flaws, and there is some purple tint buggering up the windows.

The last time the car was registered was 2002, and it has bad coolant seals. It came with a few goodies- most noteable being Racing Beat downpipe and midpipe...

I am getting ready to pull the engine for rebuild, and total scrubdown of the underbelly.. I will update the thread as I make progress. I started to work on the paint today (sanding the front bumper, and polishing/waxing the rest.)

this isnt the one that was on craigslist was it?

I'd say resto-mod for sure. The way I see it with 10AEs, under the hood it's no different than any other TII, so go as wild (or mild) as you want. I wouldn't mess with the exterior much though. lower/lip/wheels is as far as I would go exterior-wise.

I've always had a 'fantasy project' involving a 10AE; restore the exterior and interior to pristine factory spec, have the factory wheels widened so they fill out the wheel wells better (and put more rubber to the ground), and drop a n/a 20B in it :).

cadillacdaddy03 03-21-10 09:16 PM

Nice. Your seats even look good I'm restoring my 10th AE too. I picked it up just over a month ago. Needed a turbo and paint. Everything else was all there, even the stock equalizer. My plan is to keep the body OEM with vert wheels and a BNR stage 2.

Nice find. 29 RX7's wow! You should call guinness world records and see if you could get the record for most RX7's owned. :)

20Bforme 03-21-10 09:18 PM

looks pretty clean... i cant wait for warm weather to get here so i can get back out to the garage.

RRTEC 03-21-10 09:28 PM

I did buy it off craigslist but I am not sure if it is the same one you saw.

As nifty as it is to have 1 of 1500, I was a little shell shocked that there really isnt much "special" about it other then trim..lol.. It is odd how cool owning a "rare" one is though.. all my other cars were very normal until I touched them.. This one will just be a little different.

bikeboy23332 03-21-10 09:35 PM

hey man its been a while ! last i remember you were on gt2 squared. and my car wasnt blown up then haha. check out my build up. Davids work on this car wasnt what i had expected from a mazda dealership employee.

there was one for sale in knoxville for $1000 which included downpipe and midpipe that's why it caught my eye but good buy if thats the one you got looks like it was def worth it!

i need a bigger Wg the 41mm isnt wasn't cutting it. it had a 8psi spring, making 16 psi.:scratch::(:icon_tdow

but yea its all coming along good. need my engine mnts and my tranny back from the rebuild shop. then break in time.

MazdaMike02 03-21-10 10:27 PM

Dude wheres the rest of your GTU squared project? I wanted to see it lol.
EDIT - I fail so hard, gonna go read it now.

Nice 10th AE, I would lean to restomod..nice exhaust, cone filter maybe cold air box etc.

There is a big difference between a Mazda tech, and a Rotary Tech... In my experience I could care less about who you work for, but the quality of your work speaks for itself...

For example: I have no idea where my urologist went to school, he never told me.. But I know he does a good job...

I think people that constantly tell you how awesome they are, probably do so to convince themselves....

rotordad 03-21-10 10:37 PM

Damn man I would like to say Congrats on aquiring a 10th AE, for owning 28 previous RX7's & on your 10 yr anniversary.

RRTEC 03-21-10 10:44 PM

Thanks! My relationship (with Rx's and my wife) has been rocky at times, but it always seems to payoff in the end. :)

rotordad 03-21-10 11:16 PM

^ I hear you man I'll be 30 this yr celebrating my 10th anniversary with 2 kids, but only four Rx7's. I know the ups & down & you're right they do pay off in the end.

RRTEC 03-23-10 09:50 PM

Chomping at the bit to start this build. Im sidetracked with a project im working on (for $) but i should be done tomorrow.. Then full force on the AE.

ICEY? 03-23-10 09:57 PM

congrats and the birthday and anni,

if it were my car i would keep everything a factory as possible, then just do a motor and tranny build, maybe a 20b if your feeling spontanious.

Stanello 03-23-10 10:59 PM

I'll take the pillar plastics, and seat belts when you part it out.

Although I have parted some.... I mostly fix.... I only part when there is no title..

vipers 03-24-10 04:26 PM

very nice!! looks like it could be cleaned up very nicely! and 29 rxs huh!!! damn! you have me beat! ive had 14! and i thought THAT was crazy! hahahaha...good luck with the build

mazdaverx713b 03-25-10 08:36 AM

beautiful 10AE!!! i would lean towards a restoration. 1 of 1500 is collector car status. my 10AE is all stock and people love the car everywhere i take it. minor mods like a RB exhaust and a fuel pump to support the exhaust and fcd would be outstanding upgrades if you are planning on doing any. i'm an avid RX-7 restoration guy and i look forward to your progress and i'll be following this thread!

robx7fcna 03-30-10 09:51 PM

Wow, congrats on your long road of marrge and Rx-7's!

I too recently pickd up a 10AE last november off of the original owner with 160,000 kms, all documented and even the original bill of sale!

I was also orginally planning on just restoring it completely stock, but ended up getting the motor rebuilt, which lead to street porting, fd rotors 2pc apex seals, hybrid turbo, RB turbo back, microtech.. well you get the idea.

However the outside of the car appears 100% stock, and I plan on keeping the car looking like a 10AE.

Goodluck with the build I will be most definately keeping an eye on this!

I totally agree with you, I plan on having my stock AE wheels widened, ect but have atleast 450whp.

Any updates on this yet?

Progress has been slow... But I have collected 99% of the parts for the build.. I find myself slow moving during the winter months.. Been keeping myself busy with building an FCD cleaning parts, and getting the new engine ready to install... Got some new wheels...

slowgxl 02-01-11 11:37 PM

Nice love the new wheels

RRTEC 02-06-11 09:47 PM

Thanks! I am hoping i can find some wider rear lips for them, give it a little more umph..

Stanello 03-21-11 03:06 PM

Haha, just bustin your balls since I saw the car in the for sale section. Good luck with the sale!

RRTEC 03-21-11 09:26 PM

Its off and on for sale depending on what FD crosses my path...

RRTEC 05-05-11 10:20 AM

Thought I would update the masses on my progress..

Here is the list of the parts I have gathered over the past few months..

-New intake gasket set/o rings
-New Front cover gasket
-Injector Rebuild Kit (denso)
-2751 engineering Blockoff kit
-Oil filter adapter (with fittings for additional gauges)
-Battery tray
-Battery box and lid
-Used 10th AE front bumper to replace the cracked one
-Turbo to Manifold Gasket

Basically I have gathered everything except new tires, and the fluids. I am going to try to re-wrap the harness this weekend.

Did some work on the car today... Believe it or not...

Pictures will tell the majority of the story but here is a brief overview:

Flywheel, clutch, trans mounted, Turbo, lower intake manifold mounted, front cover/pulley installed, blockoff kit installed.

I then massaged the engine in, bolted it down, and passed out from heat stroke...

3 hours down, probably another 4 hours to go with wiring, injector rebuild, and detailing, etc..

Few more...

RRTEC 06-12-11 07:14 PM

Still working on it... Got almost everything hooked up.. Should be starting it next weekend..

https://i257.photobucket.com/albums/.../rx7engine.jpg

RRTEC 07-16-11 09:26 PM

Not sure if anyone is still following this thread but........ Finally got back to the build, I actually really anticipate starting it tomorrow... I am pretty sure I have everything all hooked up, just need to put the fluids in... Oh and buy a battery. I am pretty sick and tired of working on this car.. Kinda wish I hadn't bought it, I have owned it for a year and a half and just haven't put the time in it needed.. Well at least I will be able to move it around under it's own power soon.

RRTEC 07-17-11 02:48 PM

Well apparently the fuel pump has gone bad...... Hoping a buddy has a pump I can snag.

RRTEC 07-17-11 09:16 PM

Installed an FD fuel pump. SHe runs now.. Have some bugs to work out... but it started right up and is idling at about 1100rpm. It's very rich and needs to be dialed in as far as the timing etc..

Below you will find a very short video of it running

Not sure if anyone cares, but I finished the build and sold it.. Unfortunately the new owner ripped the car apart after my 14months of work (perfectly running car btw) and is doing a V8 swap :(

oh well.. can't control everything..

Here are the pictures of the "finished" build... I didnt get to paint or very minor details, but it was super clean and ran like a dream..

UGHH

Great work man... Really sorry to hear that. :-/

my88vert 01-25-12 09:51 PM

that really sucks. Its hard to find clean fc's anymore especially 10ths! +1 on a great build

13bpower 01-26-12 03:34 PM

OMG, almost can't believe that. Buy a perfectly running 10th AE and do a V8 swap. Usually I say to each his own, but that is just dumb.
