My front lip project

I had this lip on my coupe, then on my vert. It was kind of ugly looking from some previous repairs which were there when I bought it.

I removed it and have smoothed it out, I slightly changed some things on it, this is some high build primer, im going to sand that smooth, then spray black gelcoat on the part. Sand and polish that and make a mold and pull a few extra lips for some locals.

Some call it a demonspeed lip, but the guy I got the car from called it a Mike Lamonica lip, which was a forum member who used to make them.

on the coupe and the vert

see pic below for the full view of the paint!

I have a S4 bumper on my coupe right now for a temporary thing, I think the reason s5 glass lips dont fit s4s bumpers has to do with the shape of the corners. I will confirm tomoroww, but I may just decide to modify the plug for a S4 bumper after I make the mold for the S5.

Mac- I could easily modify the middle of it to come further back, I was wondering if that would increase cooling, what is your splitter idea as I might be able to use it for my vert?

I had one of these on my S4 way back. I remember I had to cut it back in the rear, since the S5 bumper was longer and the lip stuck pass the edge of the fenderwell. Other than that it fit. I'll try to find the pic when I get home.

I really like that lip, not too aggressive, looks nice.

I have a s4 bumper on my coupe right now for a temporary thing, so its easy for me to fit it in place and see what is up. I will do that later today.

clokker 06-26-09 08:03 AM

Very nice looking unit.

Rob XX 7 06-26-09 11:45 AM

I test fit it quick on my s4 bumper. When using the existing holes in the lip it leaves it too far forward. Im going to go ahead and make my mold from the lip as-is.

When I pull the plug from the mold I am going to modify it so that it fits on my s4 bumper. I believe with re-drilling some holes and moving it back I only have to alter the lip in 2 places which should be really simple. Then I will test fit it and maybe make another mold.

Osirus9 06-26-09 03:46 PM

zomg s4 lip!
so sexy

rx-711 06-26-09 06:12 PM

suscride to see how the s4 lip come out

whiteweazel21 06-26-09 06:22 PM

S4 mold! :)

One thing that looks sort of off is in the first pic, the way the light hits the side of the lip-- doesn't look absolutely clean. I don't know if it's a dent or the lip idesign, but as a suggestion consider making it more smooth/flush. I may be talking out of my ass though-- not very qualified to make such comments haha.

Rob XX 7 06-26-09 06:57 PM

im not sure what your talking about, but the shape was not changed and remains the same as when it was still painted black and all through the pictures, black shows alot more imperfections then flat gray primer.

I smoothed some rough filler that was on it when I got it, which you can easily see under the passenger side fender area, smoothed out the radius a little across the middle of the lip, and then just smoothed out the imperfections and high build primer it.

Maybe you are seeing shadows?

EPD 06-26-09 08:01 PM

^^^ listen to the painter he knows his shit!

good lookin lip, i would only make more if you get the money up front. do a pre-order like the vendors do.

Rob XX 7 06-27-09 06:42 AM

I dont care about that, just doing this to pass the time and so I can modify the lips to experiment with cooling to see if I can get rid of my undertray.

If I sell a few so be it!

HAI-TEK7 06-27-09 08:51 AM

Heres my old S4 T2 with same style lip. Sold back in '02 :(

I do remember the lip had no mounting holes, i had to drill the holes to mount it. Also trimming back by the fenderwell as stated.

I will be keeping an eye on your progress, wouldnt mind having another one of these. Keep up the good work.
BTW your paint looks like bird shit would slide right off and not stick to it..sick ass vert :icon_tup:

Rob XX 7 06-27-09 09:23 AM

looks nice on there, nice car too! Funny because my coupe is the beater FC of the group, but I think that is about the change because I am going to paint it this summer.

Im going to make the mold this week, I sprayed black gelcoat on the plug today so next week I will sand and polish the plug and lay the tooling gel on the plug and take it from there.

When I pop one out I will test fit it on the s4 bumper again, I can hold it up in place with spring clamps and see how it looks but from your picture it looks like it fits well, well enough for 20+ year old cars right?

What happened with my other lip that was pre-drilled was 2 of the holes did not quite want to line up so I forced the bumper over and put a small dent in the bumper when doing so, I took it off and re-drilled and it went back to normal.

After 20+ years the front of our cars have rocked and rolled a little bit so I think the lip will have the mark where MY current holes are, and then it will have to be determined by the installer if those marks work for them or not.

Rob XX 7 06-27-09 01:50 PM

after looking at the lip on my car and how it sat on the s4 bumper, as well as hearing the comments of those who purchased the lip when Mike made them I decided to extend the end of the lip, this way it can be trimmed back to where the end user wishes to have it. This, along with the picture HAI-TEK provided above confirms and insures the lip will fit both series cars.

Im in the process of glassing extensions onto the lip as we speak.

Rob XX 7 06-27-09 03:28 PM

I got both sides glassed up, wont get back on this until Monday

Ah damn, I should have kept my mouth closed. It's just personal taste, something I could modify on my own.

http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/1571/89741146.jpg

What I was thinking is that the corner edge where the form begins to turn (front to side), it doesn't exactly look smooth (light, shadow, light, shadow). It's in the design of the lip itself so it would be modifying the original. But I think it would look a lot cleaner if the transition was smoother. Might be something I try if you would ever be so kind to make this lip! :)

Rob XX 7 06-28-09 11:53 AM

i follow you now, I think its hard to stretch the transistion out on such a small front bumper, if the entire lower part of the lip was not there it would be easier, but then it would look more like other lips out there.
