definitely interested, just scored some stock aero pieces and some mud flaps would complete the package....
molds are done. casting the prototype...
Can't wait to see the results.
I'm excited. |
The good news: all 4 master molds are done and a test cast of the right rear flap was done
somewhat bad news: the cast was pulled out too early and was too soft - but as you can see, the end result isn't bad. I'm sure given more time the end result would have been perfect. http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/a...cast_MF_RR.jpg More bad news: Urethane isn't cheap! Based on estimates - the set will consume more than >$100 worth of urethane :( |
OH MY GOD! It looks amazing! Kind of sucks that it's going to be that expensive but is there any way you can search around and see if they offer materials in bulk to complete them for a decent price? I'm pretty much sold and will pay for a complete set if you decide to market them. These would be brand new and not some shitty broken ones from a junk yard/etc. I'm sure you'll still have supporters to make it worth your while in the end if there is a cheaper way to mass produce them.
Thanks for the update. I'm on pins and needles hoping this works out. |
I certainly agree - I need to find a cheaper casting material. I am going to cast myself a set using the remaining urethane I have - but after that, I'm going to look at other options. As I cast different sets in different materials, I'll see if anyone wants to buy them until I've found a prefect balance of casting material and price.
I actually found a foam very similar to what the OEM ones are made of. It's a two-part foam. The problem is that the OEM mounting hardware, which does not require drilling, is impossible to find. If we drill this foam product, it's 'skin' will be broken and the product will begin to degrade. The other option I was thinking of, was to hollow-out the mudflap and only cast the skin in a hard urethane. It would be kind of similar to the other rubber mud flaps you see on any car on the road...but I'm not too keen on this idea. I think the end result would look cheap. The urethane doesn't weigh as much as I thought it would. It's similar in weight to the original foam after it's soaked in some water. Anyways, I'll post pics of the completed set in the next few days. |
Oooh, I can see the RX-7! Only flaps I've seen in person have them worn off. Lol.
I've seen used sets go for ~$100...I've got no problem paying around the same for a new set. |
Looks great! I wouldn't mind if it would come out a bit more expensive, still very much interested.
What about if you used that 2 part foam your talking about and then sprayed something like Rhino truck bed liner over it to increase its strength. Something to think about at least. Looks good though.

If we drill this foam product, it's 'skin' will be broken and the product will begin to degrade. I have mud flaps on all three of my Verts. The stock mounting hardware many times just falls off as the material normalizes to the compression that hardware uses for mounting. Screws something something retangular rather than round washers would be the best. |
Anything new on this project?
Finishing up the mother molds to reinforce the rubber mold. I'll cast a couple sets with the remaining urethane and put them on ebay. After that, it'll be by request
Does anyone know the original part # for the mudflaps?
From a previous post...

Any updates on these yet? did you already put the sets you made on ebay?
if i dont get the shine rear bumper caps, ill buy a set =]...
no sets have gone out yet. I'm looking for brackets - but my free time has been spent checking out Olympic venues lately. Traffic is getting pretty bad up here.
I expect to have a couple sets out at the end of the month |
yes, those would be freakin awesome!!!
very excited!!
Bump for intrest.
any progress??? pictures please =]
Updates on these mudguards?
i would buy a set of the brackets you make/find. I have an OEM set, but it's missing its hardware.
so how much it will be
would love a set let us know how much IM IN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the days are finally warming up so I can work in the garage again. I was unable to cast mudflaps because there was a sudden temperature drop and it was too cold to cast the rubber. Once I get my damned brakes fixed, I can get the Rx7 back on the road and make room in the garage. The molds are done and just sitting there - its just a matter of casting them in the right temp.
more to come... |
nice. im down.
I will be down aswell!
Whats the news ? any updates ?
Yo i picked up some of these yesterday at the one of the junkyards in my area they arer foam. A material alot more durable and more soild would be best. The foam just isn't really right for it but hey its over 15 years old. LOL!

Hi guys,
I'm pouring a set tonight. I've been cleaning up the molds and setting up a frame to hold everything during the curing process. The PIA part is that my car has been in the shop for weeks now and I can't do a test fit...ARGH! I'll post up pics once the set is cured. I'm likely just gonna sell the rubber bits. I'm sure everyone can find double sided tape, bolts, screws, and brackets. rotary #10 - these new ones are urethane rubber. The foam ones disintegrate way too fast. |
how much??????? I wannt :]
Im interested too. Price please
interested too, hope it comes out good.
Some good news and bad news...
Good news: the molds are holding up and I've poured the set http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/a...edmudflaps.jpg Bad news: the estimated amount of material needed to cast in urethane is double what I thought. The volume of the rears threw me off. SO...unfortunately, it doesn't look like its going to be feasible to hit the $100/set goal. Probably double that. If anyone is interested PM me. Sorry guys. I'll post up the pics of the finished product in 336 hours. |
if anyone has any other ideas of a cheaper material I can cast in - let me know. I could try foam - but I really don't like the idea. I tried casting hollow mudflaps but the end result was less than desirable...
lol picknpull 5.99 each ! @ Tension
@ n7k1 the foam is way to soft and it absorbs water ekk ! Not unless you can get some type of silicone seal on em to prevent water from getting in. Also I think it would be good if, folks who buy em can get some trim paint that blocks or prevents UV and heat breakdown. Also do the rear mud guards have "RX-7" that your recreating? LOL i had to super glue a few of the foam pieces back together and cracks closed. I kinda regret getting them but I'll just fix em up and put em on another FC or mines. |
Ya, the rears have RX7 on them. Here's one the I cast a few months ago:
http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/a...cast_MF_RR.jpg The ones I'm casting are made of urethane so there's no need to seal them or paint them - they should stand up to some wear and tear. I'm contacting some local suppliers to see if I can find a cheaper supplier for urethane. If there's enough interest, I'll make a bulk order. |
just let us know.
im still very interested $100/for the set, will be great. If we can manage to stay at that price. |
honestly the whole mud flaps thing is only cool because they are somewhat rare, once every had them I think the desirability will be lost

^ word. Im down for some mud flaps.
OEM LOOK is the way to go |
so who has bought them and mounted them ?
I am the mud flap king, at least for a little while longer. ;)
So what's the status of the mud flaps / price? I'm surprised to see that everyone else is as interested in them as I am, when I originally Googled the mud flaps, I didn't think very many (or any) results would come up. Yaayyy I'm excited.
The cheapest I can make em for right now is $200. I'd post up some pics - but my s4 vert has been in the shop for 4 weeks now! I'm picking her up tomorrow morning and will post up some pics hopefully this week.
Did you ever resolve the hardware issue? Were you able to source a set, or did you just put together some aftermarket brackets?
What material did you end up making them with? And I really think that you should be able to rig some brackets.
