convertable with a hard top?

Has this been done before? Pics?

DragonRx7 01-09-08 06:15 PM

No and no.

They make them for convertible s2k's. I like the "coup" look of the verts, but dont like verts. They should start making these (carbon fiber or not) http://www.vividracing.com/catalog/w...00hardtop2.jpg

SouthSideSlider 01-09-08 07:36 PM

i was working on a design for one awhile backe until my flashdrive went missing i would need to model the top befoore i got to serious into make in it but it does see there is a market for it.

pingpong 01-09-08 11:20 PM

Technically the vert is half-hard top, right? The front targa portion is treated as a hardtop, no?

I would buy one, please don't stop working on it.

Wrong and pics do exist. I've seen it on this forum, but I can't for the life of me find them now. It was a red vert with a red FG top that was molded off the shape of the convertible top.

Could be better designed but there you have it.

Hypertek 01-10-08 04:02 PM

i like the shape of tII verts with the hood and rear spoiler mounted to the back.. if someone could make a really clean lightwieght top that looks like it would have been factory i think it would be nice.. becuase i think with teh top down, the top itself folded just looks funky

phoenix7 01-10-08 06:13 PM

HAHA, are you talking about that one guy that made a half ass hard top a long time ago????? :rlaugh: It was supposed to be a hardtop but really wasn't!

As far as a hard top: why do you even want one??? Just get a coupe if you want a hardtop.

That kind of looks like he just wrapped some sort of vinyl plastic over the existing cloth.

Because it's nice to have the best of both worlds: A hard top in the winter and a convertible in the summer.

Personally, I like the idea of a notchback RX7. I think the profile of a vert with the top up is sexy. Problem is, to do it right you would have to remove the top from it's rail on the bottom to create a smooth transition from hardtop to car body. Though that might not be to bad as a seasonal transformation, it would make casual top switching, like in a miata, an impossibility.

On my list of future possible projects is making a 'vert into a solid steel notchback hardtop.

phoenix7 01-11-08 08:01 PM

lol, put the top up in the winter! The great thing about convertibles is that you LITERALLY CAN HAVE THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS (that's the POINT of a vert). Top down when you want and TOP UP for PROTECTION FROM THE ELEMENTS several CLICKS away.

The Rigidity of the VERT is 2% LESS than a coupe with the top up. If you build a hard top then it better be strong enough to not mess with the stock specs but light enough to at LEAST be considered a weight reduction (you don't want to make the fat vert even heavier do you??)

Seems like a great way to waste good money. An the Winter excuse is kinda lame. How harsh are the San Luis Obispo winters? I doubt they're harsh enough to warrant making a custom hardtop.

I dont know, I kind of like the coupish look that the verts have but I hate verts so the best of both worlds would be a vert with a hard top.

MidnightOwl 01-12-08 10:27 AM

Staticguitar had/has (I dunno if he still has it) a Targa. It was a coupe with the targa section of the vert molded in. Kind of a vert, but not really. When the vert was working, driving around in the winter wasn't that bad. Heated up pretty quick cuz the cabin was so small.

rotarymike 01-17-08 02:37 PM

um, it's 35 F here now and I still drive my vert with the top down. Heat on, fan on high, feet & face vents... works just fine. The top of my head sometimes gets a bit cool at highway speeds, but that's why god gave me hair. :hahano:

Other than trolling up the thread, what difference does it make to you if a vert owner wants to have a hardtop that's removable? Most of us vert owners aren't exactly pinching the grams for the extra performance at the track. Shedding weight off a vert for performance is like eating a whole pizza but drinking diet coke. And why on earth are you concerned with a vert owners finances? If they have the money and the desire, let it be.

haha, sorry, I forget I deal with some foolish people sometimes. Enjoy!

I love it when ppl say I'M trolling when I post reasonable arguments yet they post nothing of substance.

If enough people are saying, it might be true. Regardless, I think everyone on the forums will sleep pretty ok knowing your opinion of them. I however now need therapy to overcome my inferiority and small penis when compared to you.:scared:

phoenix7 01-17-08 03:25 PM

:rlaugh: ok. you feel better?

JustJeff 01-17-08 03:50 PM

No, my shrink whipped his wanker out and proved to me that in fact I am infantile in size.

Point of my original post being, trolling isn't what you say it's how. You're not a troll for letting everyone know the vert is 2% less rigid. You're a troll for using the anonymity of online forums for telling everyone they're stupid while providing that information.

phoenix7 01-17-08 03:57 PM

:rlaugh: I'm not going to apologize for posting facts.

Edit:
look, let's be real, this is one of the dumbest wastes of time and money and I won't hesitate to say so. Come up to me at 7stock and ask me and I will tell you the same thing. If you don't like it then you don't like it. Period.

If you really have a problem with my "trolling" as you just claimed, then please do me the favor of putting me on your ignore list.

If you want to go to a forum where everyone will stroke your ego by lying and saying: "OMGWTFBBQ! that's the coolest mod I've ever seen!! We should make a million of them because they're so UBER COOL!!" then you should leave the RX7club. We don't take kindly to your kind round these here parts.

JustJeff 01-17-08 04:13 PM

I actually like being dominated and you are definitely stroking something of mine.

Dumb isn't spending money how you please, dumb is well....we'll wait for your next post.

Oh yeah, I wasn't asking for an apology. I was speaking more to the other people who read the thread than you. Speaking to them, thru you..if you will. I'm not foolish enough to think I'm gonna convince you of anything

id pay easily a thousand dollars for an S2K look alike hard top that was removable. The reason being when the snow falls you really dont want it to freeze on the vert top. it makes it really brittle and wears it out faster. Im looking into having one made, prolly out of FG, but i really want a CF one. Ill see how it goes, but mine wont look anything like the one from cardomain. I was thinking of making it flow smoothly back and not have the braces visible like the stock soft top does.

Yeah my top is starting to split and tear and I'm looking at $1k or so to have a custom one made that would match the OEM grain. I'd be interested in seeing how a hardtop turned out so I'd know what other options I'd have. If a hardtop could be made that didn't drip at the door window seals right by the windshield molding I would definitely be interested.
