10th Anniversary RX7 w/12K original miles

My father left me his 1988 10th anniversary edition RX-7. He bought the car new in 88 with the hope that some day it might be worth something. The car has been in a heated garage and only has 12,000 miles on it. It is in showroom condition, literally. The leather still smells new.

I am looking to sell it, but would like some advice, since I have no idea of the value or potential value of this car. It is sweet, but I really do not need another toy.

What is this car worth? What would be the best way to get maximum $$$ if in fact I decide I want to sell it?

Thanks for any and all advice.

M

TonyTurboII 01-16-02 07:32 PM

I am officially declaring you, as being on crack.

mhunter 01-16-02 07:41 PM

Actually, it is not a funny matter. I have no space to store this car and I cannot imagine keeping it outside after being garage-kept all these years.

I am not a Mazda person, so I have no idea what this vehicle is worth. I tried researching on the 'Net and I could not find any info.

I could see if it was a classic American muscle car or something, but is an 88 anniversary edition a collector's item???

M

Akagi_Red_Sun 01-16-02 07:44 PM

Did you check out kelley bluebook online? That should give you a base price for excellent condition. But it definitely is a collectors item

rx7power 01-16-02 07:46 PM

How much do YOU want for it? It's a nice car I'm sure someone here would take it off your hands.

Gefunk 01-16-02 08:00 PM

Ok, here is what I am thinking. How about I drive mine down and we will do an even trade with you. Mine is one year older than yours so it automaticaly means you will get more money for mine than yours.:D K? So when do you want to set a meeting date?:D How about half way somewhere?:D Um I would be willing to say throw in 500 dollars and make the deal even sweater.:D No but seriously man KEEP the damn car because it is extremelly mint and extremelly rare. Your dad was smart when he bought it and you need to keep it. Though if you do want to trade for a 89 GXl I am all up for it:D

RX-7Impreza 01-16-02 08:06 PM

if you do sell it PLEASE sell it to someone who knows what they are doing and has respect for the rotary. if i ever see this car running around with a 350 small block I WILL FIND YOU!!!!!! j/k

if you sell it defined as a collector you will get more money. and you will sell it to someone with respect.

Justin

MikeL 01-16-02 08:11 PM

My fathers friend recently sold his '88 TII (not anniversary edition) for $7200. I had 34k miles and was kept as your fathers former car was/is. Try selling at ebay. If it were mine, I'd put a reserve price of $8000-$8500.

Your father died? I can't even imagine what that would feel like. I don't want to find out. I may be finding out soon though. I wish you well.

vhold 01-16-02 08:12 PM

Sorry to hear about your father man.
That car will sell quickly though I bet.
I wouldn't be suprised if that is the lowest mileage T2 AE out there.

Akagi_Red_Sun,
Where is that picture in your sig from?

Greys 10th 01-16-02 08:14 PM

mhunter..check your pms
later

EunosFD 01-16-02 08:23 PM

mhunter I PM'd you too :)

Scott 89t2 01-16-02 08:31 PM

I wouldn't let it go for less then $10k. I'm sure you could get alot more to the right buyer. but it might take awhile to find him/her...

does the car start/run? when was the last time it was driven?

787B 01-16-02 09:13 PM

please please please be PATIENT when selling this car. Set the price fairly high so that some Joe Blow doesnt come along and buy it and trash it. Chances are this is the best 10th AE left and it MUST be sold to the right person. Someone who will take care of it so our kids can see a collecters edition RX-7 like it was when it was new.

your dad was a smart man and do the right thing and forget selling it. KEEP IT!!!! dont just sell it for money that you think you need.

RotorDemonGXL 01-16-02 09:40 PM

Screw what everybody else says about being patient... Sell it to me... to me.. TO ME!!!!!!!!! aaahhhh... It sucks being a turbo virgin... time for me to get a turbo! And the 10th AE is so choice... mmmm....

(sorry)

I would say it is worth 8 to 10K to us and more to your family. But if it was me and my father left it to me I would sell a different car, keep this one enjoy it a little and pass it on to my son or keep it in the family.
One day my father will pass on and I will keep his Harley as long as I live no matter if I had to sell my toy! I hope one day when I die my wife keeps the things I treasured and gives them to our kids so they could treasure them also. I also what my last ride in a fire truck but hopefully if I die it is doing what I love. (Fire department and enjoying my GSL-SE) My be one day I will own a 10th Ann.
Good luck to you and your decision. May GOD bless your family.

Six Rotors 01-16-02 10:30 PM

Like any other thing it is worth what somebody is willing to pay.Just as an indicator of the market here in Toronto,I sold my 1988 Convertible, with 18,000miles on it from new in June for $15,300Can,say $10,000US.I would suggest that you should be looking for at least that.

Felix Wankel 01-16-02 10:40 PM

Is it the one that was on ebay a while back?

Rx-7Addict 01-16-02 11:39 PM

I would guess you could get over $12,000 on her. Based on estimates based on other low-mileage Turbo II and 10AE cars, I would say definantly $10k. There was a black T2 with 10-20k (forget) on it that went for almost 10k. Then there was a 10th anniv. edition on ebay that went for around 10,000, but with over 20k miles on it.

If it were me (besides keeping it!!) I would offer it for, say, $13k and then take the best offer. I would try here first, than partstrader, autotrader, and ebay.

What you have got there is truely classic. New, there were only 1500 of those cars made, and now I bet only a select few, if any, have that low of mileage.

If you are not full of shit, Good luck with the sell and sorry about the loss.

Evil Aviator 01-16-02 11:51 PM

Unfortunately, that car has no collector value right now, and is only worth about $5,000 on the regular used car market. However, it may gain substantially more value in another decade, but I doubt that it will be worth the $24,000 originally paid for the car anytime soon, if ever at all. I understand that you may have trouble with the logistics of keeping it now that your father is gone, but personally I'd drive it because even if you got $10K for it, you would have to pay more than twice that for a comparable car to drive around town. If you want to sell it for a good price, then you are going to need to find a Mazda-fanatic with a fat wallet. You may want to try out duPont Registry:
http://www2.dupontregistry.com/

vaughnc 01-16-02 11:54 PM

I'm sure your local rx7 racing mechanic could offer you a great deal and find a good home for it.

mhunter 01-17-02 05:37 AM

I want to thank everybody for their pertintent responses. I had no idea that would generate some much info.

Now I have way too much to think about. But to some of the naysayers out there, I am not b.s.' ing anybody. This car is an original. And the miles are real. Not sure why my dad thought this would be worth something some day, but he did and he treated the car that way.

I am going to mull this over, do some more research, take some digital pics and then decide what to do next. If I decide to sell, I might as well try to do it here first.

Is there any way to determine what number out of 1,500 this is?

Thanks.

M

Give us the VIN...you can decode it and see what # it was in manufacturing. Assuming you know #1's VIN and #1500's VIN wouldn't that work?

vaughnc 01-17-02 10:50 AM

Cars take 25 years to really start getting collectible - especially the rarer models & aniversary editions.

The collectible buyer is in a different audience than most of the users on this forum.

You should see the people who think paying $8500 is too much for an emaculent highly modded dream Turbo II.

People on this forum are of the "build it up yourself" mindset.

You'll need to place adds in the proper mags & online BBs that collectors visit. I'm sure you could get most of your 1st asking price.

Akagi_Red_Sun 01-17-02 11:47 AM

Vhold:

The pic in my sig I captured from an anime called Initial D. It's about downhill street racing in Japan.

Eric Henry 01-17-02 03:44 PM

I'm with what evil aviator said, if you feel you must sell it put it in the dupont registry. Buyers in that magazine don't fuk around. Only the best. But really think about it before you sell it. You have one of the rarest rx-7s around. Low milage, Plus it belonged to your father so it should have alot of sentimental value. On the other hand, have you actually driven it?

Greys 10th 01-17-02 07:43 PM

I tried to find out what number out of 1500 mine was. I called mazda..they were real helpful..but unfortunately they said after 10 years they do not have that information any more. they did tell me it was definately a 10th AE though. What Josepi was saying...i dont know if that would work or not. It seems possible but like he was saying you woud have to know what the vin number for the 1st and the 1500th.
well
later

stinkfist 01-17-02 08:29 PM

You probably have the best example of an original 10AE in existance. I think you are right in wanting to sell it. The RX-7 is not for every one and if you don't have interest in it, then it needs to go to someone who does. It needs to be taken very good care of and driven very little. I would pay a very good bit of money for that car if I where able too.
Please make sure you sell it to someone that knows what to do with this car.

You should at least go out and drive it a little before you sell it. Who knows, you may not be selling it after you drive it.

Put the car in the Dupont Registry (its a magazine) not sure if you are familiar...

You should be able to get a good amount of money on the car (personally I think its disrespectfull of you selling a car your father passed on to you) .... Then again im Italian, and speaking loudly to my dad is concidered "a major sin"

I bet the guy wants to sell the rx7 and purchase a Pontiac Firebird or a Mustang .....

Bad bad move

fc3s_gtr 01-18-02 05:12 AM

from anniv ed. owner's view

i also own 88 anniv. ed. i truly love this car and i get looks everywhere i go... even the key is sweet... if you can afford to keep it, i would recommend that you do... and trust me, it will grow on you... but if you decide to sell it, i would ask 15k+.. i've seen a 10th anniv. ed. w/ 30k miles for 15K, so definitely more than that and the buyer would definitely appreciate it at that price... and i would also definitely look into advertizing in the dupont registery.. it is THE magazine for those with $$$$$(collectors).... you would get the top money in that mag. for your info, i bought mine with 110k mi with new motor(20k) for 5k... it's a really rare car... i wish mine was as new as yours....

Eddie

ps- sorry to hear about your father

Again, I appreciate all the pertinent advice out there. But the bottom line is that the car has to be sold.

I have driven the car, first way back when I was in college and most recently as a husband/father (yikes). It is a sweet car. And some day, I may regret getting rid of it, but such is life.

Thanks to the advice here, I am going to really focus my efforts on somebody who is a collector or who can appreciate this car as a collector's item (I cannot believe how many $5K e-mail offers I have received).

If somebody out there is really serious and wants to consider this vehicle, send me a private message.

I will have a bunch of digital pics early next week, when I can get a hold of a camera.

Rx-7Addict 01-19-02 12:50 AM

Its a shame you have to get ride of it, but:

Node would take care of it. :)

no, just sell it to the first person who is serious enough to give you over 12k or so.

Dupont is a good idea, real collectors go there. Also, classics trader and autotrader might be good.

dcamcoTII 01-19-02 01:31 AM

I'd say my soul is worth 12k, whatdya say? Deal?

mhunter 02-11-02 08:45 PM

Just a quick update. Finally got some pics of the car taken. The car is officially for sale. I will post more information in the For Sale forum.

Thanks.

cbrock 02-11-02 08:53 PM

4 years ago we bought one with 17k original miles on it for 10k. It had a few small dings. Now it has 45,000 and all the dings are fixed. I wouldn't sell mine for less then 8-9k with the rims.

https://www.rx7club.com/forum/attach...&postid=219855

Barwick 02-11-02 10:15 PM

Your father left it to you, as in he's no longer of this world? I would hold onto that and keep it in the family for as long as possible. Seriously. It's a great car. Drive it around in the summers, keep it well maintaned, and just make room for it. Seriously, don't sell it.

katali25 04-28-02 12:39 PM

I just looked up your RX7 Turbo Anniversary Edition at Kelley Blue Book (on-line) www.kbb.com, and at-best, your car is worth $4365.

I will trade you my 1999 ZR2 (S10) truck with 34,000 mi. straight up.

Let me know.

Oh, I have several cars just like that for sale. I am the adopted son of John Bowers, who has just died and left an estate worth $411 million. Prior to his death, Mr. Bowers, a devout rotary engine enthusiast, had instructed me to sell his collection of RX-7's to members of this forum for $1,000 each, the price of taxes and licensing. However, they can't be delivered until the estate clears probate court, and the VIN numbers can't be released due to a gag order imposed by the probate judge. My sales staff is now taking orders for these miracle cars, so send in your money now before the cars are all gone!

Same Question, Different 10th Ann

Was thinking about selling mine but have no clue what to ask. Sorry to reply to such an old thread, but only one I seen that was applicable. Details below, TIA. Paul

1988 RX7 Turbo 2, 10th Anniversary edition. Rare car as there were only 1500 made. Ultra rare 2+2 edition. 82k original miles.

Found on the side of the road for sale a few years ago. Owner said it was his grand kids, and needed a new engine. Had the engine rebuild by Venom Racing in Fort Wayne, IN. Has under 1200 miles on the rebuild, just don’t have time/money/energy to put into her anymore. Good base that has a lot of potential.

Engine Internals: Mazda OEM seal/gasket kit, mild street port, higher FD oil pressure regulator, RC Engineering fuel injectors, new fuel pump.

Engine Externals: Turbo rebuilt to stock, some of the emissions removed such as air pump, converted to premix, full Borla downpipe & exhaust, larger radiator with electric fan/thermostat.

Brakes: All new OEM master, booster, calipers, pads & rotors.

Body: Paint peeling, some rust on rear wheel well, spoiler cracked.

Otherwise the car is really clean, fully stock, but could use a paint job. Lots of spares including brakes, FMIC, S5 alternator, gages/gage pod.
