I am doing a custom car project using a 1988 RX7 FC engine and transmission. See the attached picture of my engine. This one has a low mounted a/c compressor and a high mounted power steering pump. My project must use a narrowed Mustang II manual rack, so the power steering pump is not needed. The low mounted a/c compressor interferes with the left shock tower in m y project vehicle, so I'm looking to see if something is available somewhere that moves the a/c compressor up when there is no power steering. So I'm wondering of someone on the forum can answer a couple of questions for me:
1. Were the RX7's ever offered with air conditioning without power steering? If so, does someone have a picture of the a/c compressor mounting?
2. As shown on the second picture, the a/c compressor does not appear to be a Sanden unit. Are there fitment issues with using a current model Sanden compressor?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Is the pictured engine the one you are using for your project, or are you going to use an FC engine? Either way the AC compressor is in the same spot for both the Sanden and Denso (Four Seasons) compressors in the FC as in your picture. What are you putting this in that's so small? Would it be worth exploring an electric compressor that you can position elsewhere?
This is the engine I'm using in the project... I was told it is a JDM engine out of an 88 RX7. It's going into a 1977 Chevy Monza... this car was originally designed to use the GM rotary but obviously none were built. The A/C compressor on the engine interferes with the stock steering gear (driving the change to a narrowed Mustang II manual rack and pinion) as well as interference with the left shock tower. Worse comes to worse, I'll have to design and fabricate a mounting bracket that replaces the stock one and moves the compressor up into the space currently occupied by the power steering pump. But always open to ideas! Any suggestions re source for electric A/C compressor?
