Back-up light switch

I found out that Mazda is no longer making the Back-up light switch that goes to the non-turbo FC. My back-up lights stopped working and could not get a FC one so I bought the switch for a 94-97 Miata (part number M506-17-640A). I wanted to let everyone know that it fits and works perfectly in the FC. Even the bullet connectors are the same. It does not have the 5th gear wires so the shift up light will be off. You can make the 5th gear switch work by adding a microswitch under the shifter boot if you want to. Make sure you use the copper washer as well.

Good to know! Mazda had discontinued FC backup light switches many years ago. I used to buy them from Atkins, but it looks they're out of stock too. Beck-Arnley used to sell FC backup light switches (p/n 201-1660), but it looks like they're also out of stock.

When I swapped out my trans last week I had to swap over the switch (s) . I noticed the red wires are VERY brittle one of them is close to breaking right where it inserts into the switch. I have a feeling I’ll be replacing soon because my backup lights are being finicky and flicker a bit. I tried cleaning and filing the little bullet connectors and reconnected but same outcome. *sigh*.

it doesn’t look easy to remove with the trans in. Support trans slightly and remove cross member may be the best way.
