Question easy way to change the diff. mount?

Just like the topic says. I'm planning on changing the front differential mount today and was wondering if theres an easy way to do this. I checked the factory service manual and dint find anything that would help me change it. Maybe I missed it in the manual. If anyone knows the section its in please post it in here. Thanks.

All I saw on that page was how to check the mount. I know the mount is broken and I bought one already. I was trying to find a write up of somesort but had no luck. I guess I'll just have to get in there and see what happens. Maybe even do a write up heh.

You need to drop the subframe about a few inches to do this. You can do without completely removing the subframe. When i did mine, i had the exhaust out and upbolted the front diff mount, rear sub, and then dropped the subframe slowly with a floor jack until i could install the new one.

Me, I'd just drop the diff and do it on a bench. Drain the diff (probably due anyway and replace with a nice Redline synthetic as a last step) pull 4 bolts and pull back the drive shaft, 4 bolts each on each of the half shafts then pull them pack and move aside. Easier if you remove the heat shielding between the diff and the gas tank, but not necessary.

Anyway, put your jack underneath the diff, remove the bolt from each ear, lower it down. Not all that heavy.

Installation is the reverse. Just be sure and torque the diff ears, driveshaft and half shaft's and new diff mount nuts and bolts according to the manual directions.

Should only take a couple hours round trip.

WAN...Sorry, I was sure just last Sunday I had written a how to on that. Its just like CYMFC3 says. Its a real pain. Support the car with jack stands forward of the subframe. Take the left wheel off. Loosen the subframe on the right and left side and let the left side of the subframe droop down. I also remember loosening the rear differential mounts. The reason behind all the above is to access the two nuts that hold the mount to the subframe. Even then you have minimal room, especially if the nuts are extrodinarialy tight. The two nuts that hold the mount to the differential are not so bad, but you are still restricted in room to work. Helps if you have a floor jack to help manipulate the subframe. I don't quite understand how Mr Hozzman removes the nuts that hold the mount to the subframe. I understand the removal of the differential, but the two nuts that hold the mount in the slotted bracket, I don't understand. Hozzman, what am I not understanding about the way you do it? Question is meant in a good natured way, not a smart *** remark manner.

I just got finished doing this.
It is an absolute, full blown pain in the ***.
This is what I had to do:
Take the y-pipe off ( it gets in the way of the dropped subframe).
Detach the propeller shaft from the differential.
Detach the sublink from the subframe.
You must drop the subframe in order to wiggle the old mount off and the new one on, so dropping that down a bit now will make it easier to get the mount nuts off.
I soaked the mount nuts in PB blaster (penetrant) and heated up each nut with a torch before removing.
King Kong wasn't around to help me wrench each nut off, so I positioned the wench so that I could use a floor jack apply pressure to the wrench.
I removed the subframe mount nuts (the 2 with the washer) by using a long wobble bar. These two weren't as bad as the other three.
One everything is loose, push the front of the diff up until you have enough clearance to get the mount off. If I remember correctly, the subframe had to be dropped about 5".
Good luck.
Lars

My new differential mount is in Car feels WAY better. I cant remember the last time it felt like this hehe. No more bumpy sounds coming from the back. Did I mention the car feels way better??

Ok. This job wasnt as hard as some people say it is. Make sure you have a friend help you out, its much easier that way. First we unbolted the sub frame and lowered it some (like 2 inches). This gave us enough room to get to the 3 nuts on the mount. I found out that taking off that big block of rubber (the one on the front of they mount with a screw in it) gives u alot of room to get to the nut thats closest to the drive shaft. After those were off, we realized that we needed to drop the subframe even more, just to have enough room to work wiht the 2 nuts on that big rubber piece. Well we dropped the subframe atleast 6 inches and this gave us all the room we needed. You may want to take your mufflers off right after the "Y" pipe. The pipes for the muffler get in the way. Installation of the new mount is pretty easy.

Get a can of WD40 or liquid wrench. Like larsyoung said "King Kong wasn't around to help me wrench each nut off". Get a nice breaker bar and a jack (to lower and raise the subframe). Wear safety goggles TRUST ME!! I learned the hard way. Dirt in your eyes and really dirty hands dont mix very well.

We did not have to unbolt the propeller shaft or the rear differential mounts or anything like that. Just drop the subframe and remove your exhaust and you will be fine. My friend and I were working kind of slow so it took us about 4 hours. This is getting kind of long so i'll stop now.

If you have any questions feel free to ask. Did I mention my car feels really good now??

Cool Hailers question

Hailers,

I swaped out my rear diff in my '88 vert for one from a '88 GXL. What I was reciting is the process of removing and reinstalling. It really wasn't all that difficult, just a little tedious.

Anyway, removing it allows replacing the front mount in the bench instead of laying on you back under the car. Maybe more dismantiling, but less scraped knuckles that seem to happen when working in tight places. Call it a counter point approach.

And, my father is "Mr." My friend call me Hozz. :-)

Well HOZZ....I almost got irritated enough the last time I changed one that I considered just droping the whole subframe to do it. Only thing that prevented me was I still had the exaust on and already had the subframe tilted just enough to remove the two nuts that attach the mount to the subframe. Broke a 3/8 drive universal trying to loosen one. I know I'm a little backward, but I'll never jack my car using the differential again.
