Those rotor housings confuse me. I think the engine is a 1984 to 1985 13G, but the rotor housings look like '86 and later style.

What about this engine?

i'm jealous. the mazdaspeed catalog refers to it as a zr01, 20b competition engine 450hp, slide throttles

oh and the timing is way advanced on that one

I'd say the one DMRH posted is an '86 or later, and mine is '85 or older. The rotor housings basically show the differences between the 1st and 2nd gen RX-7s, and I'm going by the year they changed.

Their really just a non-sensical way of "versions" or revisions. the 13B was one step up from 12A. 13G was a big jump from 13B ;D (and ultra, ultra rare)
the REW was the jap's way of saying double turbo. the double-U (W) (see, double, means double turbo's)

there isn't much pattern to mazda's lettering scheme, you just learn which engines where which, there aren't many.

Let's not forget about the 13A. The 15A is larger than the 13B. Go figure.

yeh, typo, I meant to type 13A not 12A
the jump from 12A to 13B was a slightly bigger difference

I heard the 2006 Rx7 will have 15x as the engine number designation, the rotors will be wider.

I hope it's a 15A or 15B. It probably will be if the rotors are 10mm wider than the 13B.

Let's just hope the RX-8 has sold enough units for Ford (yuck) to justify a new RX-7.

I have a couple of those side housings laying around!
To bad they are worn out though!

It was some old used stuff from Jim Downing.
A buddy loaned it to me to use as a template for some 20B stuff. They were pretty trashed most likely from spun bearings.
