20B RX-8 conversion...about damm time!

1 Attachment(s)
So here it is. I will be doing the conversion on my RX-8. Some of you know my car, others don't so here are some pics of the Renesis setup before I pulled everything out.

I plan to do the entire conversion, build, tuning etc myself just like I always build my cars. And yes it is a personal goal and challenge ;). I plan to take this entire year on the build so be patient. I am getting married this year and that really slows things down...hehe..don't let her hear that.

Proposed setup:

20B, Dowel-pinned, large streetport
BW S475 1.32A/R
Quickspool valve ( http://performancemetalwerkz.com/Sales.html )
4" FMIC
5" to 4" DP (car has full 4" exhaust already)
LT12s Microtech
LS2 and MSD LS2 coils
RA apex seals
3 into 1 collector manifold (like the one on the renesis but bigger)
Front subframe fabricated out of rectangular tube moving rack 2"fwd and 2"down
etc etc etc....blah blah blah..will add as needed...

Goals are a very reliable 550-600whp car at relatively low boost with a long power band to at least 82-8500rpm.(that is the reason for the large rear A/R and turbine with the no-so-large compressor)

Thanks for looking.

One new...very important part has arrived!

That is a 5 gallon pail and a 19" rim (or what's left of it...hehe...:/....don't ask...long time ago.)

I am planning my exhaust manifold. I want to do medium length runners as close as possible to equal length into a 3-1 collector right before a bend into the T6 Divided flange (quick spool valve).

What runner size do you guys recommend for each rotor? The motor will be street ported. Also, after the collector, should I do a 3" pipe to the flange or a 3.5" one?

I am planning a manifold similar to the TwinsTurbo one on their 13b but instead of going over the top of the turbo which makes it extremely long, I plan to come from the bottom like this guy:

https://www.rx7club.com/single-turbo-rx-7s-23/wastegate-runner-length-875775/

Thanks in advance.

Do u have any videos of ur car in action?

Very interesting stuff!

looks good!
i am interested to see the results with the quick-spool valve.

how was the boost response with the air to water intercooler?
was it not too great? i see you are going back to a fmic..

The boost response was amazing...and I know because I had that turbo and manifold with a FMIC before I switched. The IAT's were also lower on average, showing that a properly designed system will work great in "steady state" with no ice. The reason I am going back to a FMIC is because I will have considerably less space in the engine bay. A 20B, a way bigger turbo and a new radiator that is vertical and takes up space leave me with very little room to install a larger intercooler core like the one that would be necessary to keep up with the flow of the new engine. A FMIC makes sense and a 20B with a quick spool valve on that turbo shouldn't be too laggy. Only time will tell...and I might change mi mind last minute if I find I have the space for the Water to air.

Nice trick I pulled, huh? Actually, they are not original Wiggins...they are Pegasus clamps...search for them...you will like what you find ;)

If you are referring to the last Renesis setup, then yes, it would start to spool before 3500 and I could have all the boost I wanted from 4000rpm on. With the 9250redline and the short gear ratios on the RX-8, this is the equivalent of boosting by 3000 on a FD. It was a great setup. As for the 20b, Idk when it will spool but I will keep you updated ;).

Please excuse my ignorance, but doesn't a divided exhaust manifiold defeat the purpose of the quick spool valve? Wouldn't you want exhuast flow from both rotors?

Good question and you are right...maybe I wasn't clear. If you notice, the two manifolds I referenced join the runners before they reach the turbo flange. This means you do have all rotors joined when it reaches the turbo, in this case all 3 rotors, and this is good because its hard to do a divided manifold on a 3 rotor.

For the quickspool valve to work you need a joined manifold where all the runners join before or at the turbo flange and you need a divided housing on the turbo. Then when the valve is closed all the exhaust goes through one of the volutes in the turbo making the speed of the gases faster than through both and when the turbo spools the valve opens to allow gases through both volutes.

I hope I didn't make it more confusing for everyone :P

Now its making sense. Thanks for clearifying. Great luck to you and your build. :icon_tup::icon_tup:

Just a few things that are getting ready to be put to good use.

Driver's side engine mount, will allow the 20B to bolt up to the RX-8 mount... ;)

OEM Pass side engine mount (needs some modification but will fit the 20B onto the stock RX-8 mount.

Quick question, those guys http://performancemetalwerkz.com/Sales.html that make the quick spool valve,is it true that their out of business? just wondering if you have info?

Thanks.

Frank Bennett 04-04-10 10:09 PM

What suspension setup are you running?

Frank Bennett 04-04-10 10:10 PM

Are you running OEM brakes or what did you upgrade to?

Frank Bennett 04-04-10 10:11 PM

Can you post some pics of any interior and exterior mods?

Nyc Drift King 04-13-10 09:08 AM

This will be nice to see progress. As I'm looking to buy a D' series 20B as I type to power my Rx8. I might hit you up for some advise in the near future.
