1994 FD 20B build

I had Noel Alverez from Rohtech in Orlando verify that my 13B was dead; 0 PSI on the front rotor and 60 PSI on the second--Toast.

I made the decision to revive life into this FD with a 20B resurrection! I just purchased a D-series 20B from Japan2la and I am waiting for it to get into town. Rotech in Winter Garden FL is going to be doing to conversion. I will be posting numerous pictures here as the build progresses. In all I figure when the motor gets here, it will be 5-8 weeks in the shop.

Here is what we are going to be doing:

-20b is going to be torn down and new seals are going in.
-Mild street port
-Borg Warner turbo and custom pipes
-FMIC
-Upgraded Cooling system
-Dual Oil cooler setup
-Upgraded Fuel system and rails
-Upgraded Injectors
-Microtech ECU
-Custom subframe and tranny mounts
-rear differential brace

My goal is to get a reliable daily driver that can put down 500-600 hp with a crisp throttle response. I live in florida, so A/C is not an option.

Feel free to add any suggestion during the build

Nice clean car to start from. Keep us updated with the build. Great to see how others reach their goals. Any ideas on what sized BW turbo you might go for?

You will need a larger s300 or probably s400. I used to have an s361 on my 20B for a little while, and it was pretty undersized. Even the s366 will be hard pressed to make more than 500whp.

PSI are irrelevant. It's all about flow. I can give you 10+psi from my lungs (provided you give me a small enough orifice to blow through. The s361 would have been running at full capacity (lb/min) on a ported 20b. Figure out your HP goal (~7.3hp/pound of air for a rotary) and then find the smallest turbo that has that flow figure in its max efficiency range (on the compressor map) and then tweak from there. You want a turbo that is matched as closely as possible to what your goals are to give you max. area under the curve.

G'luck with the build.

Is it true that you want to stay under 17-18 psi? For the safety of the engine. I agree about the flow rates and max capacity. Maybe the s400 would be a better alternative.

I think you want to stay under 18PSI for the safety of your sanity.

A well built 20B at 18psi will give you 600-700whp. IMO that is too much to make an RX7 enjoyable unless you spend a lot of time and $$$ on chassis, suspension, and driveline mods to handle it.
In reference to your question, there is no set limit for what you can run. It is all personal preference and the goal of the build. The drag race guys run 30psi on 20Bs, but they don't mind blowing one sometimes.

Instead of going with a dual oil cooler setup, we are thinking about using a single Turbo II oil cooler which is wider and I believe has better cooling. Any thoughts?

Any figures on cost so far? I've seen some of the older threads quoting some seriously high numbers and wasn't sure if all the experience has brought the price of the job down yet.

Those are C West headlights. I put in Bi-Xenon main lihgts from a BMW M3 and used a trim bezel to fill in the space around.

Sorry to ask but I've been throwing up the idea of a v8 conversion, but the 20b doesnt sound like a bad choice, hate to ask sure its a little different for everyone, but what was your total build cost?

this is a great job, I really like how you were able to get the UIM to clear the strut towers.

We are almost done and I am in the 25K range, but with that said, there is a new fuel system, turbo, ecu, etc.. Staying true to the rotary engine and getting the power of a V-8 is why I was willing to spend the extra cash.
