yet another hood

here's my latest vented hood concept, a sort of Stillen look (apoligies for the low image quality and exaggerated character lines)

Wow,,thats a picture of a model. I can tell because of the carpet under it.

Manntis 01-05-03 12:27 PM

yeah, I borrowed the pic DF posted on weight distributions - it was the only clear overhead shot I could find.

12aPwr 01-05-03 06:11 PM

that looks pretty good. kinda reminds me of the hood on that orange supra. it definatly looks good though especially on a 7

error402 01-05-03 06:45 PM

http://sevendrift.gotdns.com/images/lrg_car.gif :) I have more top view model shots.

Mantis, I'm not sure I like the way the vent is split into three sections. It doesn't match the body lines at all. :(

Manntis 01-05-03 07:26 PM

Most of the mesh style vents don't (Supra, 300ZX, etc)

79+80_rx-7 01-05-03 07:37 PM

if you rounded the front corners of the small ones, to the shape of the bumpers corner, and then the middle one the shape of the center section of the umper... then it will look alot better........ make the two corners connect witht he centers line...... I will try to do what I am saying...

Manntis 01-05-03 07:44 PM

in 2 dimensions (from above, as in the pic) that'd work but in 3d those lines might conflict with the character lines in the hood

79+80_rx-7 01-05-03 08:23 PM

Well, I guess your right! this is all paint brought me...

you make it, and in carbon fiber, and I'll buy it.

As is. I like the triangle look.

whattaya say, Manntis? wanna have a one-off piece put on the Bonneville car?

:thumbd: I am not on board with this particular one. I agree with the previous comment. It doesn't match the body style.

A few options:

1) Vents on the top, a la 280 ZX.

2) Vents in the front valence, between the headlights.

3) Z3 style vents along the hood lines.

Manntis 01-06-03 12:00 AM

something more like this, then? 3 meshed panels, horizontal, in front of 3 larger drop-panel vents following the character lines of the car...

(strut tower clearance on the side isn't an issue as those ones would be very shallow)

http://www.rotorhead.ca/shots/vented_hood2.jpg

EDIT: actually, ignore the 2 outer drop-panel vents. They'd be skinnier than the headlight covers, so the lines wouldn't flow well. So just the broad middle one then, or perhaps itself divided into three.

riffraff 01-06-03 12:03 AM

still to much, in my opinion.. the hood can work with just a center vent, but much more than that is to much (in my opinion ofcourse)..

error402 01-06-03 12:04 AM

Starting to look alot better. :D

-Error402

Directfreak 01-06-03 12:12 AM

Better. How about the Stock TII Hood look?

MarkPerez 01-06-03 12:27 AM

another

SoRRoW 01-06-03 02:14 AM

In my book a flat cut out hole and with screen behind it looks rice.

I would go for a TII style hood scoop,BUT with the scoop centered on the car.

http://www.selectmaz.com.au/images/b...s/mirage1l.jpg

Manntis 01-06-03 02:25 AM

Thing is, a vent actually draws radiator-heated air out of the engine bay... a scoop, on these cars, is actually in a poor location to draw air in for intake purposes (perssure would actually tend to draw air out and forward, not in and down)

SoRRoW 01-06-03 02:38 AM

I was thinking the TII style will help draw air to the carb,If I was lookign for a hood to draw heat back from the rad I would like to see some of the carbon fiber hoods produced, the one thats on a white I think SA?Its has louvers and they are vented back,BUT it wil only be affective if your moving, rotarys get hot,BUT I dont think hto enough to have a hood cut out like that, what about the rain or you northern guys with the snow.?..

I would like to see a 3D mock-up before going to the testing stage, but I vote for this one.

Wonder how much high-speed front-end lift this could reduce?

Manntis 01-06-03 11:36 AM

not much - most of the front end lift is created by the weak chin behind the front bumper, nut pressure on the hood behind the radiator.

Here's more of a FEED style one:

JEC-31 01-06-03 11:42 AM

Wicked. Perhaps a bit long-ish looking, but it still works.

fatboy7 01-06-03 12:51 PM

I like this one, but with only two drop-panel vents, w/o the three open vents before it.

The one before it was ok too.You could combine the two, and have the three open vents across the front, and two drop-panel vents behind it... that could look nice....
