These are very bright. A couple of friends really like them, I've never used them. Not sure how it'd look on an older car.

But about Kentetsu's going faster comment, technically they would draw less juice and take load off the alternator, and the alternator would drag a bit less on the engine. Not sure it'd be noticable, but probably measurable.

those suckers look pretty interesting. I read that the fan design allows you to put them through the standard hole. I wonder if that also works in reverse when taking them out? hehe

0.15 horsepower.

Backup lights would add 54 more watts total. 0.072hp

All four turn signals (and their dash indicators) on together add another 114.8 watts - but they're never all on together for long. If they were, 0.153 hp.

Get 'em all lit up at once, it's still just over a third of a horsepower.

Or, just put an S4 alternator and negate the difference (same harness). Actually, you will probably make power due to having a better spark. Someone can prove this if they are willing to pay shipping on the one I have lying on the floor of the garage.

Very nice 3rd gen LED tail light project going here:

Wow, thanks for putting the link in your sig for the HID's. I had no idea this GB was even "possibly" taking place! I think HID headlights will take priority over LED tail lights for me. The last thing I want is to run over some crap on the freeway because I couldn't see it due to my crappy lights.

if you want brriter thay make small halogen lights that should work

_Ko0LaiD_ 04-21-10 11:08 PM

I bought some on dealextreme a while back. I'm sure they have some that will fit yours.

Plug in LED's are terrible on the RX-7's due to reflector design and position of the LED's on the "bulbs". The 2 ways to get properly functioning LED's for the tail lights would be to build an LED board as stated or using Sylvania's L1224R LED. This LED is used in newer Ford's including the 2010 Mustang. It is actually a reflector based LED vs. directional based. Retrofitting one of these would leave everything appearing stock but still getting the LED benefits. You wouldn't even need to open the tail lights for this. Problem is cost though. The cheapest version I've found of these are about $80 a piece from the Ford Dealership. I plan to eventually try a retrofit in my Turbo II for these and see how they come out.

Thanks for that info. I think I will eventually build a custom LED board for my car when I get everything else out of the way. Luckily I have a Bro in Law that is an electrical engineer at JPL. I'm sure he could help me get it sorted out.

just did a little reading on the sylvania bulb you mention. Looks very promising. Here's a write up on it here:

Faster rise time than
incandescent bulbs means
greater safety – 250
milliseconds for an
incandescent bulb vs. 1.8
milliseconds for LEDs
translates to an extra 24 feet
of stopping distance at 65
mph.

FirebirdSlayer666 04-22-10 01:28 AM

Ranger Forums is where I first learned of it actually haha

RotaryRevn 04-22-10 01:39 AM

Here you go, everything you need for doing the LED bulb swap for $70. I don't know how the back (hole area) on our first gens compare to the rangers.

Very interesting, I didn't think he still had any left.

Yep, looks like he's in the business of selling them now. Great price considering what you get. They seem to be very bright on the rangers. I'm not sure how well they will work with our reflectors.

FirebirdSlayer666 04-22-10 02:07 AM

I know he sold a couple of sets but it was one of those once they're gone they're gone deals. The great part about it is they will work great with any refelctor.

I sent him a pm regarding the kits. If you read his sig, looks like he has owned 3 rx7's hehe

Yo theNeanderthol, was the LED website u recommended http://www.v-leds.com/ or http://www.superbrightleds.com. Which 1?? LOL I'm a lil confused

theNeanderthol 04-22-10 01:17 PM

I didn't really recommend either. I have never used their stuff. I just posted one site that my friends who are into that stuff have ordered from (vleds) and one that I googled that looked cheap and good (superbrightleds)

check out the links i posted to the guy putting leds on his ranger. Seems to be the easiest best option for us at this time. Those led's seem superior as they direct the LED light straight to our reflectors in the tail lights as opposed to those other led bulbs that direct light out to the sides.

aight KOOL THanks

As with most ultra-cool technology, it should be only a matter of time before aftermarket mfrs clone these beauties for older applications. There are a LOT of hotrodders out there that are begging for this very thing.
Please, please, please, dear god, make it soon!

I'll be on this boat soon also.

ricerockettuner 04-23-10 11:06 PM

i think im gonna order those v star led ones. kinda pricy but i think might work. im already gonna try to gut my housings of the colored lenses. and slightly tint the clear lense so i will need a red and yellow bulb of some kind to keep the color. im just looking for something different that will blend in with my black car but not be too dim

I have bought a few of the 1Watt LED lgihts from Super Bright LEDs.com and they are great. FWIW.
