Why no first gens with LED's?
Ok, it seems every other model car scene is making custom led tail lights except us. I know I want some, and I'm sure most of you would want some. Who wouldnt want lights that are far brighter to hopefully avoid being rear ended (plus the improved appearance of the car).
You can go to u-tube and everyone has home made led's these days. I saw a ton of datsun 510's with them, jz supra's, AE86's ect. I personally don't have the time or know how right now to do this but I would think someone would have done this project by now. Anyways, I'm just bored and have been drooling over all these led lights on older cars that I have been watching on u-tube. |
Its been a project to persue in the future, I just never got around to it.

I think LEDs on a first gen would look great… but I’m not that handy. I found these, they kind of give it that appearance. Don't know they might just be crap

Because 1st gens look just fine with the lights they have.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PLT-LI-1157/ Some have had good luck with led bulbs in the front turn signals and side marker lights though. |
maybe do the euro tails light mod..?
:AA: |
I always wanted to come how retro fit lights in the style of the Lincoln MKX, before the re-style.
http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r..._lights_on.jpg I have no clue where to start therefore, i dont. |
I swapped out all the bulbs with multicluster LEDs spec'd for auto use (this was 2 yrs ago) -
$75 later and an abysmal failure. W-a-a-a-a-ay too dim for daylight use. If there's better know, I'd like to hear about it.... Stu Aull 80GS Alaska |
I seem to remember the Lincoln MKVIII's used actual neon tubes, but might have been bad 3rd-hand info.
Effective LED lights need properly designed reflectors, too. That's the harder part of the DIY equation - - LEDs are much more directional than incandescent bulbs. Making a proper LED reflector that would last would need a number of steps. |
If it doesn't make my car go faster, or handle better, or stop sooner, then I just don't have time for it. :)
Actually, I think LEDs are kind of "new age" for our old cars. I think it might clash a bit? . |
I wonder if the impending incandescent bulb ban that went thru congress a while back, & which is supposed to kick in a couple years from now, will apply to instrument/marker/automotive bulbs as well?
|

These are very bright. A couple of friends really like them, I've never used them. Not sure how it'd look on an older car. But about Kentetsu's going faster comment, technically they would draw less juice and take load off the alternator, and the alternator would drag a bit less on the engine. Not sure it'd be noticable, but probably measurable. |
they also have a facebook page with a bunch of customer pics so you can see what they look like on a car without the touched up ads on the site, ha ha
|
These guys' stuff is cool too, and much cheaper. They claim to be plenty bright too
|
oops... here it is http://www.superbrightleds.com/

Time to stock in those incadescents. As far as speed goes, incadesents are way faster than LED's, you get that when you hook up to a real power source. |

Total draw of all stop, tail, and side-marker lights on an SA = 27+27+8+8+8+8+3.8+3.8+8+8 = 109.6 watts 0.15 horsepower. Backup lights would add 54 more watts total. 0.072hp All four turn signals (and their dash indicators) on together add another 114.8 watts - but they're never all on together for long. If they were, 0.153 hp. Get 'em all lit up at once, it's still just over a third of a horsepower. |

I wonder if that also works in reverse when taking them out? hehe |

Very nice 3rd gen LED tail light project going here:

Wow, thanks for putting the link in your sig for the HID's. I had no idea this GB was even "possibly" taking place! I think HID headlights will take priority over LED tail lights for me. The last thing I want is to run over some crap on the freeway because I couldn't see it due to my crappy lights. |
if you want brriter thay make small halogen lights that should work
|
I bought some on dealextreme a while back. I'm sure they have some that will fit yours.

Plug in LED's are terrible on the RX-7's due to reflector design and position of the LED's on the "bulbs". The 2 ways to get properly functioning LED's for the tail lights would be to build an LED board as stated or using Sylvania's L1224R LED. This LED is used in newer Ford's including the 2010 Mustang. It is actually a reflector based LED vs. directional based. Retrofitting one of these would leave everything appearing stock but still getting the LED benefits. You wouldn't even need to open the tail lights for this. Problem is cost though. The cheapest version I've found of these are about $80 a piece from the Ford Dealership. I plan to eventually try a retrofit in my Turbo II for these and see how they come out.

Faster rise time than
incandescent bulbs means greater safety 250 milliseconds for an incandescent bulb vs. 1.8 milliseconds for LEDs translates to an extra 24 feet of stopping distance at 65 mph. |
Ranger Forums is where I first learned of it actually haha
|
Here you go, everything you need for doing the LED bulb swap for $70. I don't know how the back (hole area) on our first gens compare to the rangers.

I know he sold a couple of sets but it was one of those once they're gone they're gone deals. The great part about it is they will work great with any refelctor.

Yo theNeanderthol, was the LED website u recommended http://www.v-leds.com/ or http://www.superbrightleds.com. Which 1?? LOL I'm a lil confused
|
I didn't really recommend either. I have never used their stuff. I just posted one site that my friends who are into that stuff have ordered from (vleds) and one that I googled that looked cheap and good (superbrightleds)

aight KOOL THanks

As with most ultra-cool technology, it should be only a matter of time before aftermarket mfrs clone these beauties for older applications. There are a LOT of hotrodders out there that are begging for this very thing.
Please, please, please, dear god, make it soon! :worship: |
I'll be on this boat soon also.
|
i think im gonna order those v star led ones. kinda pricy but i think might work. im already gonna try to gut my housings of the colored lenses. and slightly tint the clear lense so i will need a red and yellow bulb of some kind to keep the color. im just looking for something different that will blend in with my black car but not be too dim
|
|
I have bought a few of the 1Watt LED lgihts from Super Bright LEDs.com and they are great. FWIW.
