what tool to change diff oil?

what tool do you guys use for the diff oil plugs?
Just wondering what size allen wrench it is.

bouis 05-16-04 01:23 PM

A 3/8" socket extension?

RotaryRyan 05-16-04 01:24 PM

yeah just stick the square drive in the plug.

Lotus00 05-16-04 01:41 PM

Well as long as were talking about diff drain plugs, anyone have any suggestions on how to get mine out if the 3/8 square in the plug for the socket is now round?

bouis 05-16-04 01:52 PM

Buy a new plug, then drive it to someone who can weld that socket extension in there :)

Lotus00 05-16-04 02:04 PM

Well I suppose that would work... But I think my dad would be pissed about his socket extension :D

RotaryRyan 05-16-04 03:17 PM

hmmm. do they make ez outs that big?

Tx_antonio 05-16-04 03:57 PM

what ever you do....do not tap it out. Bouis has a wonderfull Idea with welding it. I had a friend have this exact same thing happen to him...He used an impact wrench to put it back on(don't say anything I don't talk to this guy anymore) so he used a tap to pull it out. Think about how wrong it is to run a tap in a diff. It lasted about 350 miles until all gears were completly F'ed up

Lotus00 05-16-04 07:47 PM

Yeah, Ill just buy a cheap extension at wallmart and get my buddy to weld that on. (thats all those stanley tools are good for IMO)

RX7145 05-16-04 08:02 PM

Just weld a big bolt in there then you don't need a new plug.

mazdaverx713b 05-16-04 08:38 PM

that would actally be a great idea. just about half an inch of the thread and make the head as flush as possible. that might just be a great idea!

also, you could use vise grips to twist off the plug, but afterwords, get a new friggin plug
