What Pre-silencer & Muffler to use with MazdaTrix header?

Hey folks, looking for any real-world experice on what pre-silencer and muffler I should consider with te MazdaTrix header. Been thinking about a Magnaflow mufler, but not sure what presilencer I should use.

btw -- No need for a cat here in Michigan.

thx!

Be hardcore and straight pipe it.

I am a borla man myself, I plan on Borla Pro XS 2.5" with some Borla Muffler. Preferably the Mazdaspeed Protege's.
EDIT: here's a picture

What? Huh? Can't hear you, can you repeat that?

P.S That Borla looks sweet! Are you happy with the Borla Pro XS 2.5" presilencer?
Edit: I see from your sig that you use the stock cat and not a pre-silencer... my bad.

If it was me, I'd do like MosesX605 and go with a RB presilencer, Magnaflow resonator, and Borla muffler. He put a sound clip of his car on the forum; not terribly loud and sounded very sexy.

My sig is misleading right now lol. all the things you see are whats coming up and that I am working on right now.

And no, no cat. RB header, 2.5" pipe with electric exhaust dump, with borla pro xs presilencer and then to a MSP muffler.

Another muffler thread, oh boy,lol.

Do a search Newbie using the word muffler. There was a thread that was supposed to be a end all to this redundant subject. Sorry if I sound cynical but I am at the moment/ :-)

I'm still very happy with my Borla. I was out driving yesterday and the sound that it makes at full bore is just glorious.

Given an option, I'd go with Borla again, no question. Magnaflows just don't sound as good and the RB mufflers are just too spendy.

If you have money to burn though, the RB setup is probably the best exhaust for a street vehicle. It has a good balance between performance and tone.

rb header-rb presilncer-magnaflow muffler-borla muffler

if i were you id go with a borla XS for a presilencer and a MS protege muffler like suggested above. i can get you a MSP muffler for pretty cheap if you want it. if you dont, i may get it to try it out on a 7 in the future.

Doc I did a search last week but couldn't find anything specificly focused on presilencer, which was the core of my question. A lot of comments on tone and what cat, etc. but not what I needed.

Sorry to disappoint and bore you!

Warned you that I was in a cynical mood last night. :-)

There is only 1 real pre-silencer that works and that is the RB one.
IMHO using anything but that is a waste of money and time.
As far as the end of your question about muffler usage, now that subject has been beat to death.:)

pjr 05-09-07 12:10 PM

Doc, I agree with you about the muffler!

OK, to reset the stage here: Car is a GSL-SE with the factory 6 port engine.

I'm looking to use:
  • RB or MazdaTrix header
  • Bolt directly to the RB pre-silencer
  • Straight pipe to Muffler (season to taste; Borla or Magnaflow)

Question one: Volume very streetable, right?

Question two: is it better to go with the six-port injection back-pressure pickup tube on the header or the pre-silencer?
  • I know that the MazdaTrix header is the same as the RB with the exception that they include the six-port injection back-pressure pickup tube right on the header.
  • In a full RB setup, they put the six-port injection back-pressure pickup tube on the pre-silencer.

Is one way better than the other?

Correction. Mazda trix buys there exhaust systems from Racing beat, they are the same.
The provision on the header is not for the 6 port system, it is for the O'2 sensor.
The pre-silencer has the provison for the air tube which is used on the stock exhaust. The air tube has the small tubing for the vacuum hose that provides the backpressure needed to open the 6 ports.

Doc, thanks for the clarification... then it sounds like I should go RB header & pre.

Anyone with thoughts on volume?

Manntis 05-09-07 01:23 PM

RB header & pre, for sure. I've got the full RB system and actually get compliments on the exhaust note from rotorheads and bystanders alike.

rb header- rb presilencer-magnaflow muffler-borla xr1

i dont suggest going with header, presilencer and then back to the muffler.

if you do that then you need to go with a RB muffler. its more restrictive than the magnaflow or borla, but quieter.

if you go with borla get the XS series. theyre quieter than the XR.

MosesX605 05-09-07 07:43 PM

My car was too loud with a Magnaflow.

They're just not as good at noise supression as a comperable Borla, and they sound much much worse.

Avoid Magnaflow. Get a Borla. You'll be happier for it.

All, Thx for the feedback!

AWS140: Just wondering, why not go header, presilencer and then back to the muffler? Is it too loud? Or some other issue?

Depends on what your definition of "too loud" is.

I personally would want more than that if you go with the RB presilencer because it does very little in the way of muffling. It just cuts down the high tones and makes a mellower note.

Jeff20B 05-10-07 01:04 PM

I'd agree. Those systems with just presilencers are disturbingly loud. It's as if the presilencer is not even there.

dbragg 05-10-07 03:16 PM

itll be pretty loud. maybe not too loud for you, but i assume you want something more toned down.

do you already own any of the exhaust components?

if not, youre best bet would be to buy a used RB set up.

pjr 05-10-07 09:12 PM

I don't own anything yet but the car! If a pre + muffler is too loud, what would be a better setup as I start from scratch?

Rx-7Doctor 05-10-07 09:56 PM

A header to pre-silencer with a straight thru muffler at the end is abnoxioulsy loud. I had that on my SE and I had to watch how hard I accelerated at intersections to avoid giving people heart attacks.lol.
Personally I am a Rb fan of the complete system including their prima flow muffler.
Everyone states that they are restrictive. Well according to RB they add 5HP over the stock muffler so how restrictive can they be?
Their are no dyno sheets for these straight thru mufflers and with guys running 2 mufflers who is to say that even thought the mufflers are the straight thru design that 2 of them are not as (So called restrictive) as the prima flow and are not killing hp?

dbragg 05-11-07 08:17 AM

it all depends on how quiet you want to be.

i think in your case you need to buy a used RB system off someone. itll be cheaper that way too.

The presilencer does far more in terms of tone than it does in noise suppression, that's for sure.

It's totally worth it, though. Nothing sounds quite like a good RB silencer.

pjr 05-11-07 10:01 AM

In terms of "the system," which pieces do I need? I know I start with the Header and end with the muffler, but what pieces in between? I am assuming no cat, and it sounds like the pre-silencer isn't required either. So what DO I need?
