US spec SA side light query

Hi, as most will know our UK spec 80's have the two colour side light lens. I'd like to change them to the full orange ones like US or AUS spec - my question is do you still have two lamps within the backplate or do they run some funky setup to make the one lamp flash if the side lights are lit?

project7s 04-19-14 03:50 PM

It just has one bulb in it

project7s 04-19-14 03:51 PM

Would you sell your turn signals? I would like to have that style for my car.

captainbizzaro 04-19-14 04:00 PM

Yeah I've got a spare set if you want to do a swap deal.

captainbizzaro 04-19-14 04:36 PM

If anyone knows how the one lamp system works I'd be grateful for any input.

project7s 04-20-14 10:16 AM

Yeah that sounds good to me, you can pm me the details.
As far has how the one us ones work, when you turn the park lights on it lights up, so when you use your turn signal on it starts flashing. As far as wiring from all I've read they should interchange a just be plug and play.

I don't think the side markers in the US flash when the turn signal is activated. You can do a mod
to the wiring to make that happen but by default they don't flash and theres only a single bulb
in there.

project7s 04-21-14 08:10 AM

Yeah, I was talking about the ones in the front bumper. The ones on the fender are the same us vs. uk I think

rwatson5651 04-21-14 08:31 AM

European spec requires a blinker on the fender, hence the second bulb in the UK cars.

rwatson5651 04-21-14 08:38 AM

But wait, isnt that why the european cars have the round light in front of the Rx-7 logo behind the front wheel??

I have been thinking about adding the one behind the wheel ever since I was almost hit in Atlanta traffic because the other driver didnt see my signal. In my case its worse because I removed the front sidelight when I installed my front air dam.

Captainbizzaro, do the UK cars have the round sidelight? If so how easy are they to come by?

Yes sorry we're talking about the units in the front bumper, ours are like this...

All UK spec cars have the repeater lens on the front wing, assuming the looms are pretty similar from country to country then the cable goes up and over the inner arch liner and through a hole just behind the headlight where it plugs in to a connector.

So from our point of view here, the two lamps work independently and is a simple setup. Yours has one lamp doing two tasks.........

project7s 04-21-14 06:45 PM

Hey your car looks awesome, I really how wide the wheels are

captainbizzaro 04-22-14 04:15 PM

Cheers dude, they're only 8's all round but negative offset, -28 or something. I can't recall exactly...

Thanks for the positive comment though.

So Capt. did we answer your Q about how our bumper lights work?
Its a SINGLE bulb with a dual filament (so 3 wire harness). So it is illuminated with the normal lights "on", then blinks brighter when signaling. I would think if you just swap over the lens cover, you will get a similar effect to what we actually have in BOTH markets: your white-lensed bulb will now just illuminate 1/2 the lens, but it will glow yellow, instead of white. And the signal side will only (??) illuminate when actuating the signal switch, otherwise stay dark....
Inner housings are diff, yours having a metal shield btw the 2 bulbs. But the lens is the same fit, obv.

^^hey dude, well to be honest I was still in the dark until your post. Makes perfect sense now though - I never even considered it being a dual filament lamp. Well I am still gonna transplant the entire housing in as I like the look of the whole lens lit.

Cheers for the input.

:)
and I went so much trouble to chase down your style Euro-spec front light assemblies! funny world....
Glad we could help.
