Oddly, it seems many JDM cars put out more hp when sold in Japan than they do here, why, who knows. If that's the case in the 7, which is the first I've heard of it, the difference would minor. If you want more power, the first and best upgrade is headers long with a full exhaust system. After that, you need to start reading, lots.

First you need a free flowing exhaust, either Racing Beat or custom designed. Then, you can look for an improved carb (www.sterlingmetalworks.com). Then you'll need to update your fuel pump and install a fuel pressure regulator to keep the new carb properly supplied https://www.rx7club.com//showthread.php?t=529605

The early Federal and California smog rules were really a set of contradictory compromises; fuel consumption and mechanical efficiency were sacrificed in order to minimize specific tailpipe emissions. Japan's smog rules differed quite a bit from US rules, during the 1st-gen years.

adjust your timing a bit, the timing numbers are found pretty easy, I believe its 16 btdc leading 24btdc trailing don't quote me though. also you can loose the a/c if your willing, its a lot of front end weight and robs power from rotational weight. If you don't have deq you can loose the smog pump, and the rats nest. there's a tutorial on mazspeed.com. You will also have to seal the catalytic converter with some jb weld, or actually weld it. you might as well break the inside out while your at it. Follow the tutorial closely take pictures and notes, tag parts. you may need them again someday. This will give you a little more umph until you want to start buying go fast parts.
