things you would like to see made for 1st gens

Heres my list

1. s4 TII tranny conversion kit. would inluce a modified FB shifter assembly and a new rear tranny mount. and maybe even a driveshaft (s5 trannys have a rear mount that is more difficult to modify)

this wouldn't be too hard to produce (in fact, i am thinking of producing them for sale - driveshaft)

2. catback exhaust 3in.

due to different turbos and manifold a turbo back exhaust is not that reasonable.

3. a carbon fiber hood

Northern 7 10-16-03 02:43 PM

Functional cup holder

82streetracer 10-16-03 02:47 PM

wtf?? WHY??? Have you ever pulled off your stock hood? It's light as hell.

82streetracer 10-16-03 02:49 PM

mainly I just want a vented hood, but a carbon fiber one would look sweet also.

the stock hood is nowhere near as light as a carbon one.

carbon ones weight like 8 lbs.

the stock hoos is at least 20 something

Concealed non pop up headlamps done right in a buy and install form. no mucking around. Oh ya they have to work well with lots of lamp power. The lexan lens MUST be an Xact replica of what it replaces meaning it will have to be a formed part that follows the hood and fender curve AS WELL AS the front valance panel curve.
Meaning a part that has compound curves and looks like it came from the factory. I know this is a tuff one but it needs to be under $500 incl. all lights( I need it to be a 4 round setup), wiring, and proper pods and such.

cd deck that replaces the tape deck in the gsl-se's and still look stock

Maguire 10-16-03 03:09 PM

fun fact for SA's: the mk1 miata and SA ashtrays are the same. so you can use the miata replacement cup holder. It might work in S2 cars too, but ive never been in one, so i cant say for sure.

my mom had a miata and I thought that it might work for my s2, ill have to look into that.

but it was in a bad spot in the early miatas, its not any better a spot in a 7, except that the shifter is higher.

i agree. it defiantly sucks in the miata, but its better than spilling it in the seat when your going to get lunch.

When i went to go pick up my sa im my dads miata i thought... "man, that looks exactly the same". so i switched them out real quick and it fit! It doesnt get in the way in the 7 because the shifter is futher forward, and like you said, way taller. so your hand doesnt hit the cup when you shift to second.

speaking of that, i would like to see a short throw shifter made for SA's. not a chopped off shifter, just a shorter throw.

coffee holders

When they were developing the 3rd Gen (current) Viper, they polled and surveyed Viper owners heavily. They correctly assumed that the number one market for new Vipers were the previous Viper owners.

The number 1 feature request was a dead pedal.

Very high on the list (I forget exact number) to not have:
- cruise control
- beverage holder

I guess they consider those to non-sports car comforts.

What do I want?
- better selection of body kits
- polyurethane air dam/bumper replacement
- metal hood scoops/vents that can be fit into the factory hood
- aftermarket EFI (that is reasonably priced)
- aftermarket GSL-SE suspension so people will quit destroying GSL-SEs to steal the suspension for their GSL, and GS models

(some of that is tongue in cheek - BTW, for those interested in the GSL-SE suspension...look at the Miata, I was told you could take that suspension and it is newer.)

There was someone on the forum producing CF and fiberglass hoods..... Everyone seemed to like the idea, but not many acutally bought one, if any.........
I've noticed, there really isn't a point to try to mass produce an item for a 1st gen. No matter how much intial interest the product seems to have here, no one acutally wants to spend the money unless its really cheap.

rotor vs. piston 10-16-03 04:33 PM

I'm sure if you can market some of this stuff to japan there would be demand for it. They don't seem to mind spending on thier fb (sa).

fatboy7 10-16-03 04:38 PM

Unless the parts you propose are either super cheap, or of substantial benifit to those that race SAs and FBs, it's not likely to ever be produced.

I hate to be a pessimist, but I doubt 99% of the things you mention will ever be done on more than a one-off-for-a-couple-friends fashion. This car is too old, and the owners too cheap for a new companies to spend the time and money making average-joe consumer products for. The light conversion for example. $500? I good set of DOT approved head light repacements alone would cost more than $500. That doesn't include the fixtures, the lexan, or the time and effort to put such a kit together. I'd expect a quality kit along the lines you stated JO to cost around $800-$1000. Thats more than half the car's worth in most cases.

Most of us here are very inventive, and creative at finding ways to get performance using as little money as possible. Why? Because we either lack the money to do it "right", or just really like to excersize creativity. Certainly the breed of people that modify these cars beacuse they just truely love them, even though they have enough money to buy and modify newer nicer cars in a higher price ranges, are somewhat rare. I'd place most of those that race this car on a regular basis in an organized fashion are the few that likely fall into this catagory.
