suspension issues, engine question! 85 GS

I just bought an '85 GS yesterday, it has a few problems that I'd like to sort out. The car is all stock and has ZERO rust, no bin rust or anything. :D

1: I just noticed today (and I didn't at all yesterday, not sure if it wasn't doing it then or if I just didn't notice) that the driver's side sits like, 2.5" lower than the passanger side. Both front and rear, but especially at the front. I looked at the suspension and everything looks fine, so I don't know what could be going on here. This is my 2nd FB with "lean"

2: it idles a bit too low, and roughly. Vaccum leak maybe? I sprayed a bit of carb cleaner directly INTO the carb and the idle picked up, which to me means it's too lean.

3: something in the rear end feels funny, almost like it wanders or moves, I only notice this at low speeds like when taking off from a stop/turning. There's a noise coming from the rear too, but I think maybe it's just a brake.

4: also.... anyone know where the steering box adjustment writeup is? It's got about 1" of play in the steering wheel.

I think that's it for now.

Thanks alot!

Start checking your vacuum lines, maybe consider the rat's nest removal if you don't have emissions testing in your area. Good luck. :)

yeah, it's past the age of required emmissions testing.

but it's alll stock, and I hate to mess with it.

the car's lean seems to change randomly, I guess depending on it's mood.

maybe I should swap the springs from right to left, put the weaker springs on the lighter side.

Just buy the ReSpeed Rack and Pinion with the new crossmember :D

sooooo not spending that kind of money on this thing, especially since it's all stock.

I allready have an FC and FD to steal my money away from me :P

Did you ever recover that black FD they stole from you btw?

These sound like classic FB prblems, and unfortunatly, if you didnt want another car to steal your money, why buy another RX-7 lol?

Terrh 09-04-07 09:48 AM

I never saw the black FD ever again :(

The left front spring is ~1" longer than the right front spring, if they are still the originals.
FB's tend to lean towards the left side. That side is heavier, due to the engine being off-center. Add an A/C compressor, steering gearbox, and a driver, and left side weight bias just keeps getting higher.

^^ And thats after you relocate the battery :)
