subwoofer placement

does anybody know if putting a subwoofer in the bin behind the seats sounds ok, or should i just buy a box.

ioTus 12-28-03 04:57 AM

Personnaly, i would just buy a box!! You want a square box, as far back in the car as you can, firing directly up to hit the rear window.

I have never heard a ride w/ them in the pass bins, but both my current setup and previous setup (in my old 12a blackie) had a box. i loved them. And i just have a shitty box, not firing in the right direction. yeah. anywyas.

Ur in washington! we should get together some time.

speaker layout

check it out...but you'd need alot of room!!

Enclosure

My enclosure turned out awesome, but it was alot of work to do. If you've never done fiberglass it will be a long project. Take a look at my web page. I hit 134db with 600 watts. You need a sub that can fit in small spaces, around .64cuft.

Placement of subs will totally depend on you. I had a box that fired up to the glass, now I have a box that sits right behind the seats and fires straight back, and it hits hard (very little room for anything else though). Base is omni directional so placement is like the butt dyno, interprited by you. The further you are away from the source the smoother it will sound. I would like to hear how john64's sound, that just looks too nice.

What about putting Trebel speakers in the bins, and subs in the back like you 2 have. I dont like the all bass trend. I like to hear the lyrics nad guitar.

There's a nice article on the MazSpeed site that has dimensions for building a hidden sub box for the storage bins. I haven't tired it yet but it seems like a good option if you don't want to fill up the hatch with speakers. I also thought about trying a bazooka style tube sub in one of the bins. Here's a link to the MazSpeed page

Here is a really good thread with info.

You wouldn't want to place treble spekaers (tweaters) out of direct line of sight. Otherwise its just counter productive and a waste of money (treble doesnt pass thru objects as well as bass does), and as mentioned before, you would want the bass wave to be as long as possible before it reaches you.

this is my personal preference.

I have 6/9's in the bins behind seats, and a 10" alpine sub in a truck box about 6" back from my seat, and small speakers up front. It sounds good, but I could use some more treble up front

This is what I have been planning for over 2 years. Other "things" have been more important though.

I will likely have to re-design it now because of my cage though.

I have my 6x9s in the bins and my subs firing off the back window. sounds awesome. only thing you need to worry about is the height of the box. I had to lay my box on it's back because it was blocking my sight out the rear window.

Subwoofer install

If you are still looking for 'Sub'suggestions I just completed a really neat installation in my first Gen. Purchased the smaller 'cannon' style Bazooka sub woofer with built in amp. I removed the bin behind the passanger seat and cut an 8"hole in outside end-facing out as directions suggested then cut a hole in the other end so I could access controles on subwoofer-I insulated below bin and added cushion between cannon and bottom of bin so it fit snugly. Then I reinstalled bin and removed drivers side and accessed all the wiring from there. I could even lock the bin after it was reinstalled and best of all it is invisible. I'm sure there are ways to add more base, but when this is combined with 4 really nice infinity speakers installed in stock locations it gives me very good balanced sound- I just don't care for giant speakers in the back of the car asking to be stolen! and it will still shake the car. :D

I also have 4 Infinity speakers in stock locations, and 10" woofer-passive-radiator with a built in 200 watt amp (Infinity Bass Link) in the trunk space, facing up, next to the passanger side bin. Not invisible, but pretty compact and it delivers.

I have 2 solobaric 12's in a teeny ass box w/ the speakers firing back and w/ the box pushed all the way up against the glass......Ive tried just about every position for the subs and this seems to be the best.....BTW David, your 8's aint shit ;)
