Starting up 12a

How can i make it easier to start up a 12a engine?

blackdeath647 06-24-08 02:18 PM

does it not start up?

teddyrx2 06-24-08 02:19 PM

man what the hell kinda of question is that poison? We need more information then that, like what problems are you having as to why it won't start and all that other good stuff

blackdeath647 06-24-08 02:23 PM

^that's what i was thinking lol, but i didn't wanna be mean, if you just want stronger spark, use the search option and look for 2gdfis, or different shit like that, but that question is just blank, we need to know more about your car.

poison2003 06-24-08 02:34 PM

not really that it doesnt start it just takes some gas pumping/choke to get it going for the first time for the day but after that it starts up pretty well

I just thought maybe there are some tricks with the car or something

feerocknok 06-24-08 02:46 PM

Fuel injection would take care of those problems.

Rogue_Wulff 06-24-08 03:16 PM

I hate to tell you this, but there's a reason it's hard to get started. Either carb issues, ignition issues, or compression issues.
Mine can sit for more than a week, and simply turning the key to start, it'll fire up in less than 2 seconds, 99% of the time. Occasionally, it takes 3 seconds......

I'd suggest starting out by checking the carb. They can drip fuel into the engine after it has been shut off, and the longer they sit, the harder it is to start.
I'd be willing to bet 90% (or more) of your problem is carb related.

Is there white smoke from the exhaust once it starts? Any mysterious coolant loss?

That's good news. I have cold starting issues as well but it's a slow coolant leak - thus after a day of sitting it takes a bit to push out the coolant out of the engine to get a good start.

Good luck.

Here is whats happening it wont stay idle for more then 10 sec the first time it starts up but after it warms up it can go idle for quite some time
So is that a sign that there is a problem with th carburetor?

yetterben 06-24-08 07:40 PM

dude its twenty years old has a choke use it!

I do but if there was a way to make my life a bit easier then that would be helpful

axle 06-24-08 07:56 PM

pull the choke let it idle for a couple of seconds at about 4000 then slowly push in the coke and let it idle at 1500 till it warms up the choke should pull itself in after is reached normal operating temp if this doesn't make it easier than you have carb problems most likely

yetterben 06-24-08 08:13 PM

buy a gm lol

wow i wish mine did that, it was really bad i'd have to pump gas into it at any start due to vacuum leak but fixed that and now i pull the choke out and first start takes about maybe 5 secs start sometimes a bit more sometimes a bit less...any start after that it's normally even faster than most f.I. cars lol.

Rogue_Wulff 06-24-08 09:16 PM

Choke? I rarely ever use the choke. It works fine, but I never seem to need it.

Downloading a copy of the FSM (available in the links in my sig) will help you immensely with these cars

Bookmarked
Ill probably get those manuals printed eventually for reference and such

Kentetsu 06-25-08 11:16 AM

Cover the basic tuneup items. Check the timing...

Paul Loatman 06-25-08 11:28 AM

I have the same exact problems the first start up of the day takes forever, and i'm thinking it's the carb, pretty much everything else in the car is rebuilt or new, except for the carb, so once i get a new one or rebuild the existing it should start up good. Like others have already said it's most likely a carb problem.
