So what are YOUR shift points?

I've been shifting at 4000 rpm's as of late. Sometimes if I wanna feel some speed I'll wait till 5000 rpm's. And I'm usually gunning it. I'm out of 1st by 20mph, 2nd by 28-30mph, 3rd by 35-40mph and I'll drive around in fourth untill I pass a gas station and see gas prices....then I shift to 5th and feel guilty. :D

Hades12 01-20-05 01:16 PM

Red first
Red Second

Put in fifth and cruse.

I like to Red Third but 95 is just a bit fast most of the time.

vipernicus42 01-20-05 02:07 PM

VroommmmmmBUZZShift....

I shift when the buzzer tells me to, and cruise in fifth like Hades12.

Jon

Moonchopper 01-20-05 03:03 PM

Eh, it depends. On days that I'm feeling a little 'competitive', I'll shift at about 4k. On 'cruising' or 'gas saving' days, I'll shift at 3k.

Rusty Shackleford 01-20-05 04:11 PM

i dont like hurting the engine..............much....... so i usally shift at 4 untill i really know its warmed up then i will shift around 5 in 1st then the rev buzzer the rest of teh gears only when a ricer is around

dj55b 01-20-05 05:28 PM

is it better to cruise in fifth then 3/4th(as far as gas mileage and engine heat, and so on) ? since the engine would be reving less

Snapshot 01-20-05 05:30 PM

On an easy day 4 is good. Hell, I go to 4 in my Miata on an average driving to work everyday. Just depends on how sporty I feel after that. Really get the burst of power between 5-6 in my SP 13B. Going much more than around 7500 is useless studying the power curve.

comradegiant 01-20-05 05:49 PM

When the engine is cold I shift at 3500. When its warm I shift first and second at 6500. I usually try to cruise at around 3000.

Moonchopper 01-20-05 06:02 PM

Wow. 6500. Is that really the best[better] point to shift? I'm used to driving a Jeep with a redline of 5000, the automatic tranny shifting at about 3000-3500 driving normally. Does it wear the tranny out any faster to shift at 6500? Significantly, that is.

cdrad51 01-20-05 06:04 PM

damn I must be a little nuts. I usually shift at 5k and cruise at 4k, and if I'm racing I shift at 8k.

comradegiant 01-20-05 06:12 PM

I speed-match every shift, so in my case revving that high probably doesn't change much. I figure thats where the buzzer was set, so I might as well shift there.

riza 01-20-05 06:16 PM

I'll shift at 8-85k if I need to pull away from someone, but normal driving around 4k

cdrad51 01-20-05 06:17 PM

You're right. I found 8k rpm is the best for my streetported engine. Between 7k and 8k rpm is where it gets its peak powah.

numan2 01-20-05 06:23 PM

usually around 3-4k but if I'm feeling froggy I run it up to around 8k.........that bridge on the secondary side loves the revs.

Moonchopper 01-20-05 06:25 PM

Is it safe to rev a stock engine to 8000? Or would that pretty much only be considered 'safe' for a streetport/bridgeport?

lovintha7 01-20-05 06:26 PM

Around town I shift at 4k, or 7.2k if my right foot is feeling frisky. Cruise around 3k.

85MarkRx7 01-20-05 07:25 PM

8k is safe for a stock port and helps out alot I would not go any higher than that though. Once I get my street port I will shift at 10.5k when racing as it will be an extremely agressive port 12a possibly even a bridge port.

YapaKanichi 01-20-05 07:51 PM

ummm.....I don't watch the tach I go till it feels right or until it's buzzin

:werd:

I either shift when the buzzer tells me to or when I start to feel the power drop. Thats when I know I have gone just a bit further then that gear will take me.

Halenstone 01-20-05 08:49 PM

Woah!!! Ok, I got an 85 gsl...I've never heard a buzzer!! Unless that's the noise I thought was my exhaust when I completely floor it. Forgive my ignorance but, is the buzzer inside the car or does it sound like it's comming from outside the car?

Rotofire 01-20-05 08:54 PM

It sounds like somone is honking at you.....it took me forever to figure out that it was my redline buzzer!

I normally shift around 3K on my daily cruising.

DAVID GRIMES 01-20-05 08:59 PM

The buzzer is in the back of the gauge cluster. I unhooked mine 'cause I ignore it. Stock is a 7 grand buzz. I'm good to just over 8000, so I don't want a 7/8 of the way buzzer.

BTW I shift as high ( max 8200 ) as I can get away with at any given time given the circumstances. I don't beat on my car, but I let it stretch and breathe.

Some of you guys are gonna get 300,000 miles driving around like little old ladies... shift at 3000 and 4000 and shit.

Moonchopper 01-20-05 09:10 PM

If I have a day where I feel like driving hard, I drive hard pretty much all day. But most days when I feel like just cruising, I "drive around like a little old lady" pretty much. I still go 5-10 over the limit, but I don't mash it to get there.

Mine must have been unhooked at some point in time. I'd like to get it working again, because from what I've heard, I sort of like the sound.

Hrm... I wonder if you could change the buzzzz sound to something like "SHIFT MUTHA F***A!". That'd be quality :rlaugh:

AHHAAHAH funny shit!! i would be fun!!! and i think you could do that... just get a pre recorded thingy and hook it up... i think...

dj55b 01-20-05 11:11 PM

i would say that about 100 dollars ... and can prob be done within 3 days (giving the fact that we have money, which most of us normally don't :P there for about a month lol. ) that should be an interesting project though i think that i'll be like the holden monaro (when you turn on the traction control it gives out the most straight talking ozzy messages: "What a poofter, thanks to the world everyone, there's a (somthing) on board, what a poofter, poofter, ya poofter, poofter my shima can drive faster than this, poofter, poofter, poofter" .... and so on) i've got a clip from top gear if anyone is interested to seeing it its honestly the most annoying car that i've ever heard. its about 73MB ... if anyone has a way of posting it somewhere i'd be glad to give it to them to show how annoying it is, (i got my copy from kazaa you can try there)

rwatson5651 01-21-05 09:59 AM

its not safe for any of them unless they have had the internal mods necessary for that kind of rpm especially if its for more than just a very short duration.

Misthael 01-21-05 10:16 AM

If the buzzer only has positive and negative leads to it then you could rig those to a relay and run a sound machine of some sort off the relay. But if there's more than just positive and negative leads then I don't know. That would be great though. Somebody do this now!

cdrad51 01-21-05 11:54 AM

For those who have not heard the redline buzzer, right click, save as:

http://oregonstate.edu/~abelk/sound%20clips/exhaust.avi

Notice how the camera man gets thrown back in the seat at shifts hehe.

christaylor 01-21-05 12:41 PM

TWS 2.9: I shift right after the transition from turn 12 to the front straight, into 4th. Take 4th all the way down the front straightaway and through 1/1A/2 and down the short straight between T2 & T3. Downshift to 3rd into T3, which will kick the rearend out (most of the time) and 4 wheel drift from the apex to track out. Shift to 4th at the transition to the "back road", then back down to 3rd at the transition from the Big Oval (the time between the up and downshift is pretty minimal). Again, this kicks the rear out and it's a 4-wheel drift from just past the T4 turn in through the apex and track out. If I do it right, the buzzer is going off the entire time, almost drowned out by the exhaust, but not quite. Quick shift to 4th right after track out, and full throttle (sphincter pucker through 5th) BRAKE, downshift, turn in for 6. Buzzer in 3rd, grab 4th, and cruise down the "backstraight". Flat out through 7, if it's a little loose I'll tap the brake with the left foot to settle it down, then straight toward the Pepsi tower (I don't know what it is now, but it was a Pepsi tower when I was a kid), downshift to 3rd, turn in, and full throttle through Lefthand T8 and RH T9. Gas, gas, gas towards T10 (the carousel) when it's braking just before the transition, listen to one of the leftside tires squeal from the variation, and turn in. Throttle modulation all through the turn, maybe a left foot brake if I'm feeling giddy, clip the curb at T11, shift to 4th, and away we go down the backstraight. Foot to the wood through 12 (The Kink) and make sure nobody wants around me in 13/14/15, because they'll hit me if they try. I turn in for 13, and make it through there without sweat (I was making time on people last race through here, and I normally suck, so NO SOUP FOR YOU), full throttle through 14/15 as we head towards the transition where I shift to 4th.

Oh, whoops, you mean when I'm gayin' it up on the mad-tyte street, right? I dunno. Whenever I feel like it.

Sterling 01-21-05 03:04 PM

I removed the potentiometer that is on the tach circuitboard for the buzzer and hooked up a remote pot. I can now set at what RPMs the buzzer goes off.
It can also be hooked to a relay for doing evil things @ a given RPM, such as opening my electric exhaust dump @ 4K RPM.
:)
