So....am I the oldest geezer here?

Hi all,

Been noticing that, in general, RX-7 drivers are pretty young. I am 56 and got my 1984 SE new when I was 38. Still drive it and still enjoy working on my cars. How many other older men or women drivers are on the forum?

cwsttu 09-19-02 06:59 PM

wow thats so cool, i know for a fact im gonna always be a car fanatic and ill to be a post whore at any age. as far as now im only 19 but one day ill be doing exactly what ur doing :D

Blackrx71 09-19-02 07:01 PM

I'm 43 and just love 1st generation working on my second one. Had a 1983 and now now got a 1985 SE.

Project84 09-19-02 08:20 PM

Create a poll for the first gen section to see the ages. I think someone may have done it, but the age groups were stupid; the first one was like ages 10-21. Not very acurrate.

Stripgear 09-19-02 08:22 PM

Does 39 qualify as a geezer? I think in this setting it may. I have an '82 that I bought in '83 and an '85 GSL-SE.

youdoitimtired 09-19-02 08:36 PM

i am 20 and just bought my first 84 se a couple of weeks ago.

coldy13 09-19-02 08:41 PM

I'm 16 and bought my 85 GS 7 months ago. I think that qualifies me for one of the youngest RX-7 owners :)

MIKE-P-28 09-19-02 08:43 PM

31 on october 9th :) I think you guys ought to go toegther and get me a LSD for my conversion :) PLease :) LOL

Viperx7 09-19-02 08:54 PM

37 here. Kinda bad thinking that I've been driving 7's (got my first in 85) longer than some of you have been alive. Damn I feel old:rolleyes:

79+80_rx-7 09-19-02 08:57 PM

um... i am 14.... and have had my 79 for almost a year, and my 80 for about 10 months....

So... most of you have been driving a rex' longer than I have been alive:)

Peace.....

iam1ru12 09-19-02 09:05 PM

I'll be 32 in December. I bought my '85 in '91 when I was 20. Sold it 3 years later (stupid..stupid..stupid :bash: )

I gotta say it's much easier owning an RX-7 now with so much information and colloboration via these forums and the internet in general.

Theoldguy 09-19-02 09:44 PM

39 and I'm glad to see that some are older than me.
Guess I need a new handle though. :)

diabolical1 09-19-02 09:51 PM

well ... i'm 29 going on ... like ... 56 (that's how i feel)
4th Rx-7 ... been driving them since 1987 ... don't see that ever changing, despite age, times or tax bracket.
:D

mwpayne 09-19-02 09:56 PM

43 here..had my first 7 5 months ago..'gave' it to the repair shop who had kept it for 3 months-kept finding more and more problems trying to fix the carb. They tore up the repair bill and put brakes and idler arm bushings on the GSL I found last month for the title. Works for me!:D
I love these cars!

jbcobra 09-19-02 11:17 PM

I'm 45, so I’d say that puts me squarely into geezerdom. My son picked up an 82 GS a few months ago for his first car. Unfortunately we found it had been sitting since 1997 so it was severely gummed up and needed a lot of little stuff replaced. Since he needed something to drive, not fix, he ended up getting a nice sensible Saturn station wagon and I ended up with the RX7. I've been having a great time resurrecting it and it runs pretty good now thanks to a lot of tips I've picked up lurking here. This is a great forum, thanks for the help!

fmj355 09-19-02 11:43 PM

Got my first rx7 a couple weeks ago. Got my first car, a 1952 Chev 4 door sedan, in 1966. Hmmm.

1st7heaven 09-20-02 09:15 AM

Hey there are some........ .......aged fellas out here!:D hehe

I am 32, bought my 84 GSL in 87....still smelled new!!! Sold it in 96 and bought it back in 2000 and, hence "1st7heaven".

I have owned a 79, 83, and 2 Turbo 2s

Project84 09-20-02 09:21 AM

23 own a 84 GS and currently build a 13B S4 to put into a 2nd Gen. Bought the 84 in 98.

Yes, you are the oldest geezer here. As a youthful 53-year-old, I can only stand in awe of your geezerhood. ;)

damon 09-20-02 12:39 PM

Ill be 22 on Oct 23 , I have an 84gs (in the shop) an 81 gsl no motor or tranny, and looking at a black vert with a weber carb

gamble302 09-20-02 01:24 PM

im 18 and have 3 rx-7's now.

2 85 gsl's and an 85 gs i got monday. gotta fix the radiator, the brakes, the clutch, and swap it to lsd and discs of course. should be done by tonight me thinks. already did loooots of stuff to it. pics coming tonight.....

pmartin 09-20-02 06:58 PM

Well, so far no one has admitted to being older than me. If this thread runs a few more days like this, I think that I should be crowned "King Geezer of the First Gen Forum".

BTW, I intend to keep the 84 SE indefinitely. Changed the oil and filter the other day and noticed some oil leakage in the pan area so need to look at that. Still has the original oil pan gasket so that may be the problem.

inittab 09-20-02 08:09 PM

Hey whata coincidence..... I got my 1st Gen when I was 38 too! 'cept I've only had it for 8 months now... :)

Defprun 09-20-02 09:25 PM

I'm 20 and i just came back from something like 5 hours of driving (the longest i've drivin' 5 speed) and holee schmolee ive never had this much fun in my life!!!!!
This would be my second year owning the car, but only now has it truly come alive. With the emissions off, im sure its got about the same hp numbers as a SE.

:allcho:  Cheers to the old guys! :gulp: :puke:

wam 09-20-02 11:00 PM

well im 34... and ive have own about 20 of these cars. i have many now.. i buy, sell repair theses cars....ooo what fun they are!!

PaulFitzwarryne 09-21-02 02:38 AM

Was given my first car in 1938, single seat battery powered! Taught to drive in a Bugatti 37A which I wish I now owned.

Currently a young 68, and love my RX-7 1985 convertible as a real classic. Its totally reliable, and this year it has been driven in conditions ranging from snow over a mountain pass at minus 8 degrees C to desert outback at 44C.

I'd like to see someone try and beat that.

:owned: :D

hanman 09-21-02 11:48 AM

46
Owned my 80 since it was brand new on the showroom floor. Now i own a 85 GSL-SE, and a 86 Base. Talked my dad into buying a 90 vert. He's 68, if I could get him to post here he would win the age award. I am saving my 80 for my eight year old son.
My girlfriend says that this is some sort of whacked out cult. But she loves to drive the second gen and the 80.

'85 convertible?? Is it a custom one-off or did you type the wrong year? I hope I'm still as active as Mr.Fitz when I get there....currently 39....

msmcgill 04-24-04 03:32 PM

49 for another two weeks. Original owner of an '84 GS that I bought when I was 29. Don't put me in the geezer category until next month. Meanwhile, I'm performing all my own work on the car - because there are no mechanics around here who are old enough to have experience working on a Gen1 Rotary and the ones who ARE old enough, can't remember how to.:D

Wankelguy 04-24-04 04:11 PM

Well, I'm 46 and got my first RX4 about 15 years ago.
I've only had my '80 RX7 for a couple of years now.

Hello, Attila the fun! Haven't heard from you in a while, hope everything is good with you. Did you ever find that breaker bar? ;)

1rx7owner 04-24-04 04:21 PM

I am 29 and owned my first RX back in 1995 when I bought a mint condition 1980 gold colored RX7 with leather interior. Later traded it in for an eagle talon which I still regret to this day. Now own my 79 and love it.

joerberg 04-24-04 05:02 PM

Old Geezer

You've got me by a year. I'll be 56 in September. My son and I both have RX-7's that we race here in the Northeast and I have an '80 that I drive on the street.

Old don't mean slow!

Bob Holton 04-24-04 05:09 PM

I think I may be the oldest old fart on the forum at 73, I own a 85 GS and a 74 RX3 and have owned two others plus my 85S parts car plus a 65 VW Beetle, still get a ticket for ten over on occasion. Started driving and raceing a 35 Ford Coupe flat head v8 on a 1/4 dirt track at the fairgrounds at age 14. Age is only how you feel and think. Bob

mar3 04-24-04 05:16 PM

Well until that post, I was going to say pmartin still had the crown since he'd be 58 now...this thread from the dead kicked me in the butt...oh, to be 39 again!:p:

Lotus00 04-24-04 05:17 PM

Im 19 as of today. I bought my first 7 3.5 years ago... too bad that ones getting parted out now :( (rust + body damage = not fun to fix)

Haha, this thread is like 2 years old...

Well I guess I still haven't heard from George in awhile, didn't realize how old this thread was.

KC Shaw 04-24-04 05:24 PM

I'm 51, LADY RX7 owner ...bought mine in '78..still in driveway..added an additional 79 to the driveway last week.

Stacey GSL-SE 04-24-04 07:03 PM

What a wonderful idea..... a thread to show the young ones that there are "some old folk" that belong to this club. :)

Alright, the truth is, I'm 40 and female. However this is the only time I will admit this. Next time you ask... I'll tell you I'm 36. ;)

Well, the sun is shining and the '85 GSL-SE that I bought directly from the dealers lot needs to go for a long drive. See 'ya.

Dick Elliott 04-24-04 09:51 PM

Second Oldest Old Fart For Sure (I Think)

JULY-24-1934 and I drive a 83 Rex to work every day. Your never to old to go fast.

clean85owner 04-24-04 10:01 PM

I'm 15. I should be going to go get my permit or whatever soon.

bliffle 04-25-04 01:18 AM

I guess Holton, Elliot and Fitzwarryne are a little older than me. I'm 67 with 4 FBs and a REPU. Still do some mechanical work, but farm a lot of stuff out to a mechanic. I need a break: I also have two houses I'm modernizing and expanding. Too many hobbies!

Here's my task list:

-finish tiling bathroom in wifes house
-change basin faucet in wifes ...
-lay new laminate floor in wifes new addition
-tile kitchen in my house
-install new cabinets in my house
-new granite counters
-new refrigerator
-new stovetop
-new kitchen sink
-install whirlpool in my bathroom
-tile bathroom
-new shower faucet
-new molded glass basin + faucet
-new bath cabinet
-new eljer toilet
-cedarline 2 closets
-tile master bath
-re-tile shower stall
-new granite , basin, faucet
-new baseboards all around
-change all doors, locks, hinges in my place
-new starter in 85SE
-finish oil seal fix on 85SE
-repaint 85SE
-send blue83 to bodyshop for frontend and paint
-silver85 GSL to shop for LF fender ding
-get 83blue brakelights certified OK for tags
-get red83 smoggified
-rubout paint on red83
-convert REPU from points to electronic ignition
-install RB exhaust on REPU

And I thought retirement would mean no work and utter boredom! I could use a little boredom, though.

Wow- there are a lot of geeze.. whoops- tenured rotary fanatics out there! I'll be 37 in May and this is my 2nd 1st gen.

Yeah- I know how you feel bliffle- Too many projects, so little time. I built the majority of our house 4 years ago and still have work to do..Never stops eh? I also love old tractors. I restored a 1946 Farmall A a few years back (old handcrank start) and love to use it. I mowed about 30 acres with her yesterday. My 5 year old son has claimed that tractor as his own (which is fine by me, so as long as he gets no ideas about my 7!).

Bob Holton 04-25-04 08:05 AM

Hehehe. Age is a fignewton of your imagination, been retired 20 years and still cant find tiime to sit around much, Cars and flintlocks keep me busy. Enjoy your old age guys !!!.

ChasRX 04-25-04 08:12 AM

40...and so glad to be here!

Bob Holton 04-25-04 08:59 AM

Tenured rotary fanatics, I like that !

LongDuck 04-25-04 11:52 AM

I'm 32 - got my 80LS at 16 (still in my garage), and my 84SE purchased from my dad about 6 years ago (I took my driving test in 'his', then, 84SE - now mine).

The SE gets worked on much more consistently these days, but can't seem to find the heart to sell the 80LS.

I keep thinking it would make a good 'showroom stock' rebuild, but it's seen better days.

We need to post more frequently, here I was thinking the forum was ruled by 18 year old's!

iowa_hawk1 04-25-04 12:23 PM

I am 46 and am still driving the only car I ever bought, a Toronado Silver '84 GSL with 106,000mi on it. Got in new in February '84. Just test drove an Rx-8. Its a fine car but has 2 too many seats. Thinking about having the '84 restored as it is completely stock except for the gas tank and radiator. Anyone ever replace a 12A engine with a TII? I am looking to make it better than new.
