Small update on my project...

Ok I trashed the 2nd gen oil cooler, gonna do something different. This is a 450 hp Perma cool oil cooler. And its fan cooled with a small flex a lite fan :) Also made some -10 lines , stainless steel braided ... :)

Let me know what everyone thinks about it :D

inittab 08-01-02 12:58 PM

Wow, that's a nice setup! However, oil that's too cool can be just as damaging as oil that's too hot, particularly for turbos. How does this setup regulate the temp so it's optimal?

Nice work, Mike....but lose the damn sig "novella"....:p:

treceb 08-01-02 01:28 PM

looking good.

khaine_d 08-01-02 01:44 PM

man that work looks good mike/ give me a page when you get in I want to see your new toys...

j9fd3s 08-01-02 02:09 PM

if you're running an oil temp gauge you should be ok. the fc oil cooler is so good the porsche guys use them

mike

peejay 08-01-02 03:13 PM

The problem is the porsche guys aren't running rotaries... :) boingers are much easier on their oil than rotaries are.

j9fd3s 08-01-02 03:35 PM

911's are air cooled, they are hard on thier oil. besides when was the last time you saw a mazda part as an upgrade for anything?

mike

eddierotary 08-01-02 04:10 PM

were did you get the oil cooler?

gamble302 08-01-02 04:21 PM

Oh 911's.... I thought you meant 944's.

911's at least have something like 12-15 quarts of oil and a dry-sump system... :) :) Probably not a bad idea for a rotary, either.

Mazda oil coolers are frequently used for many boingers. They ARE rather large. (IE it's more than overkill for, say, an A/Sedan Mustang)

Well I figured its not really gonna matter, one good run and a lot of idleing, this isnt gonna be a cross country cruiser :) LOL I got the Haltech it has PWM's for controlling such a gaget :)

fatboy7 08-01-02 08:22 PM

So if that is how your are going to have your oil cooler, where do you plan to stick that big ol' intercooler?

He already put it in, straight up. He made new brackets for it and the radiator.

Am I right?

MIKE-P-28 08-01-02 10:12 PM

Yelp its all in there...

Theres was no way in hell, it would have ever fit in front of the radiator support...

I got pics somewhere...

MIKE-P-28 08-01-02 11:23 PM

Heres a pic from a couple weeks ago :)

Since rotaries don't suffer parasitic loss from a crankshaft dipping into the oil pan, I never really saw a need for a dry-sump on a rotary. The only Exception would be a full race car, where the high G-forces could move the oil out of the pick-up tube for an extended period of time.

DIRECTFREAK THINKING OUT LOUD:

If you *really* wanted a (cheap) dry sump system, (instead of $2500 for Mazda's) - couldn't you just use the inlets and outlets for the oil cooler, and run an external oil pump with a small reservoir?

Thinking out loud over.

j9fd3s 08-02-02 11:14 AM

i think a rotary would benifit from having more oil, especially the turbo cars. how you would do this is another subject that i haven't found a good answer for

Where are you getting all those cosmo's at? You buying them from Soshin in Japan? I heard someone say you dont pay by the motor you pay by the pound!!! But they send you what they want... You can specify all rotaries tho, but some may be dud's as most were used as core engines and parts :)

really? that would be cool. i got the 20b from fc3s.org, and the 13b was sitting in a friends shed, and more than likely the leftover t2 stuff will end up in the gsl-se

mike

MIKE-P-28 08-03-02 09:07 PM

http://www.soshin-j.co.jp/

Thats where they come from, you know that these guys are selling these motors for practically nothing, just imagine what the freight is on this stuff...

Hope you speak Japanese tho... :) Or go to http://babelfish.altavista.com/tr and get a ROUGH IDEA and I do mean rough.. Dunno if they are by the pound for sure, (i heard someone say that tho) but I bet your ass they will cheper than shit, considering theres like 5 middlemen in this before it gets to you...

MIKE-P-28 08-03-02 09:16 PM

How many rotary engines you need ? Damn bet theres a couple in there...

See attach.

MIKE-P-28 08-03-02 09:17 PM
