Sleepy eyes headlight mod

So I love the sleepy eyes on cars like 240s, and I was wondering if anyone has done it with the first gens? If anyone knows about this, share!

iceblue 01-03-06 11:30 PM

quite comon considerd uber rice by most. If you would like to do this mod. Just disable power to the light motors by unpluging them or taking the fuse out however you want. Then crank them up by hand with the little turn knob on the lower portion of the motors.

rxtory 01-04-06 12:48 AM

if your gunna do the sleepy eye mod do it proper and dont just pull the fuse(that way you dont have half your light showing when you dont want them 2) there is one guy on here that has a nice one adn has taken the time to do the whole head lights so the the light bulds are all custom, i didnt like the mod how it looked until i seen one guy that took the time to do it proper and change the one huge light to 2 small ones being totally visable when they where popped up

Or touch a wrench from the battery terminal to the headlight motor. Found out that way works rather well. :squint:

I agree. Some Hella (Or similar) headlight pods, sheet metal, and a little bit of time would produce a much better-looking result imo.

Something along the lines of these.

trochoid 01-04-06 01:55 AM

That doesn't look bad, except the fog lights are out of proportion along with the hood scoop.

riceburner1r2001 01-04-06 06:08 AM

That is not sleepy eyes that is a bsp head light conversion.

82transam 01-04-06 08:13 AM

a japanese company called pivot makes a control box that allows you to adjust how high/low the headlights pop up, when you see all JDM silvia's etc with their lights half up chances are they are using this. Here's one on ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Pivot...spagenameZWDVW

Hope thats what you were looking for.

perfect_circle 01-04-06 07:23 PM

i know someone who has that, works well, he wired in another switch so the lights are on when its kinda up.

AcidAngel7477 01-04-06 07:45 PM

It isn't mine. It's just a picture I have in my RX-7 picture collection. Oh how I wish it were mine, though.

notveryhappyjack 01-04-06 08:40 PM

I really like the way this one looks but how come the rear tires stick out so far?

camocarl 01-04-06 08:47 PM

Maybe because they are wider or have a different offset then the front wheels :)
Sorry Im being Captain Obvious.

neektar 01-04-06 08:57 PM

That dual headlight conversion is great. I tried a search on bsp (or w-e the conversion was called) in the forums and didn't get much. Suggestions?

skizzle84 01-04-06 08:58 PM

So I couldn't figure out how to "hand crank" and make them sleepy eyes. Could someone explain it in further detail?

the rears are epsilons w/ negative offsets while the fronts are SSR formula mesh wheels.

flight_of_pain 01-05-06 10:08 PM

to hand crank them down...........

open your hood up and just infront of the battery you can see the head light motor. there should be a knob that has a rubber cover on it pull this cap off and then to the right of this knob is a relay with a plug connected to it... unplug this plug and then hand crank your light up or down.... and repeat on the passenger side.

Been there, about 6-7 years ago I tried the BSP swap. They are a mile off with the hinges and actuators and the lights provided were pure crap.Best way to ruin a 400 doller purchase in my opinion.I ended up fixing them in the up position before tossing the whole mess and going back to stock. Then I succesfully swapped the Mid Tenn Miata flush kit in,right before CP came out with their flush kit.Mid Tenn Miata is gone now,BTW.

Yeah, the flushmounts are always cool.

BandDButton 02-10-10 12:15 PM

Sooooo..
Since CP Racing is out of business, where can I get the flush head lights now?

DivinDriver 02-10-10 03:47 PM

Start bending tin?

mikeric 02-10-10 04:42 PM

Check out the Miata forum. I uses to race those and there were lots of people doing that mod. The MR2 forum is pretty active and may have some leads.

CHiNO84gsl 02-13-10 12:17 PM

if you want to go sleepy eye search!!!!! plenty of people have done write ups of how to do this properly. ie not pulling the fuse. and imo this is not a rice mod unless you also have a park bench spoiler, a fart can, stickers, and switches/lights/guages with no work done to the motor. I did this to my seven a while back and i dont think it looks rice.

Best bet is to make your own, the cp racing kit is complete garbage anyways. I have a set of them in my garage and am refusing to use them on my car. I found another option, but I think I lucked out...

mikeric 02-15-10 01:45 PM

Rice:

1) Food staple, ususally associated with asian countries but consumed worldwide.

2) A car, usually a late model of japanese origin, that has had numerous features added to it that may enhance its looks, but do nothing for its performance.

So, unless someone is arguing the questionable aerodynamic benefit of the sleepy-eye mod, it is essentually "rice". As ugly as it looks, the flushed headlights on race cars are functional as the aerodynamic properties of the car do not change at night especially since their spoilers are tuned to the amount of downforce that they need.

Big wing spoilers are ugly--yet they (can be) functional. Your average Civic DX does not usually take curves at 100+ mph speeds with 400 horses to the rear wheels, so in that case it is Rice. A 996 on the race track with the same spoiler is not rice. However, although my car sees track time and is RWD, the ricers have ruined the wing spoiler for everyone.

Best example to the above post is:

I do agree that it's a purely aesthetic mod, and if it was completed with a big wing, fart can, neons, etc and a bone stock motor then it would be rice and u should drive a honda instead of an rx7.

But if your actualy making decent power and jus want to make your car look better then y not do it? thats the only reason i did it to my 7. I mean to each his own. I just perfer the look of flip ups over flush mounts even thought the flush mounts are actualy functional. Theres plenty of guys on this forum that have done this to there 7 and i wouldnt say thier cars are rice bcuz of it would you? ne one?

...i started working on my sleepy look a wile ago, and it is still unfinished. On top of my rex project i started restoring 72 beetle baja.......dont see ending for either one of the projects now....maybe spring time
...But look into this write up for ideas
good luck
