side moulding removal
 

anybody had any success removing the side mouldings without destroying the paint underneath? I know you can pull them off, but is there a decent way to get the adhesive off, or are you pretty much guaranteed to destroy the paint?

i just used some adhesive remover and a razor...

what kind of adhesive remover did you use? how much did it take? or how much should I get? Was the paint ok afterwards?

I only did it on the both rear small strips...cuz the one under the gas lid was pretty much FALLING off...

but i just used some general adhesive remover (i say general cuz all it said on it was 'adhesive remover') and it didnt take very much...i used the razor more than anything.

how did it look you ask? well...my paint on the car was pretty faded as was...so the paint under the moulding actually looked better...lol... :rlaugh:

ok, where did you get the adhesive remover? was it a liquid or an aerosol?

I've used paint thinner or gasoline with a soft cotten cloth. It works pretty much like the adhesive remover but its cheaper and I didn't have to run into town to get some. Peal away as much of the adhesive as you can first (a razor blade can help with this but be careful of the paint) then rub the rest off with the solvent and cloth. The paint is fine afterward, don't let the word "paint thinner" fool you. To put them back on, use the thick wide 3MM double sided adhesive tape. You are going to put them back on, aren't you?

At body shop store they sell these disks that are made SPECIFICALLY for removing body moulding tape and the such. Its just like a giant eraser wheel. Its cool as fuck cause its smells like a pencil in grade school when you erased the shit out of something. BTW, it doesnt harm the paint. Just use some polishing compound afterward.
