Should the rearend be replaced? (sorry dialup)

These are pix of my rearend axel...do you guys think it should be replaced?

Here's a pic of the Diff

Also, what is this?

Finally, what is this part? Its in the front just in front of the tire under the bumper?

Also, I found my oil leak...the drain plugs were loose.

I would suggest taking it out of the car, changing the gear oil and whatnot, replace the gasket in the diff housing, and sanding the rust off. Then paint is black or any colour you want.

bizarro 09-07-03 02:19 PM

i would love to do that...how hard is it to do that? know of any sites that has pix and instructions?

MikeLMR 09-07-03 02:26 PM

THe 1st what is that piccy is of the fuel filter and pump

The second what is that piccy is the brake duct under the front bumper/the air dam support (I think ... thats an odd angle!)

pratch 09-07-03 03:15 PM

Fuel filter, fuel pump and Cover.

Yeah, I agree it's the front brake duct.

Honestly? I'd say replace those rusted parts if you can't sand/seal them back to good condition.

bizarro 09-07-03 03:26 PM

well...after clearing some of the rust off the rear axel a leak started :( i pluged it up for now with some caulk so i won't make a mess in my garage...

how much should i pay for a used replacement, gsl-se ofcourse...?

kettlman 09-07-03 03:41 PM

sounds like a painter. sealin things with caulk.

LOL awesome, you're probably right on that call. just remember, if you go gsl-se then you have to change out the front suspension too! unless yours is already a gsl-se? ok, i'm being fat again.

bizarro 09-07-03 03:50 PM

i don't know too much about cars as i'm still learning, but i don't think sanding, caulk and paint will be a permanent fix for this, would it???

plus if i take it out, sand the rust off, aren't i just possibly opening other leaks? i'd rather just replace the whole thing with a solid replacement with no leaks and no rust...

for that, how much should it cost me? or rather how much should i offer someone selling theirs? and yes, it is a gsl-se...

bizarro 09-07-03 07:21 PM

bump...

Can someone give me a ballpark figure of how much a used rear axel would be and how much a mechanic charges to have it installed?

thanx

Just because the axle is all rusted like that doesn't mean it's faulty. Mine was just about that bad and I restored it using a lot of elbow grease and POR-15 and a top coat of engine enamel. It came out real nice and or course works perfectly.

bizarro 09-07-03 07:42 PM

yes but its rusty with a leak...if i clean it up i think more leaks will come...this is repairable???

JIMMY54 09-07-03 07:59 PM

Where is the leak comming from? I highly doubt its rusted through! Mine was just like that aswell. I sanded it to get most of the rust off and used some type of rust paint. Never had a problem.

bizarro 09-07-03 08:35 PM

i think it did rust through because as i was wiping off some dirt and oil a piece of rust fell off and it started dripping FASTER...i couldn't see the hole but i did see alot of oil coming out...

hey... do me a favor..... take off on of the back tires... and take a picture of the rear wheel wells..... you know what i mean?

bizarro 09-07-03 10:49 PM

i know exactly what you mean... :( ... and yes they are rusted as well...i was going in tomorrow to have them entirely fixed but now i can't drive it until the axel housing at the least is replaced...here are pix ... no need to take the tires off :(

hornbm 09-07-03 11:20 PM

WOW, I havent seen a rex with rust that bad yet, mabey its being on the west cost, but I live in seattle. Seriously, I'd honestly be thinking how much the car is worth, compaired to how much it will take to get all the rust out.

I mean, I've heard of the wheel well problems before, but DAMN, now I know what you guys are talking about.

bizarro 09-21-03 12:46 AM

**Update**

I found a rearend in NYC and had it installed, it had ZERO probs going in and I might even have parts from the old one to sell, excluding the leaking axel housing ofcourse...rotors, callipers...etc...

As for the rust and the last comment, I've thought about it but i just love RX7's too much to give it up...maybe next summer I'll look into getting a chassis if I come across one. for now i'm having the wheel wells replaced and even part of the floor for a great price...the work is being done at a sheet metal shop and they ashured me that it would be at least double as strong in support...
